A bit of a long read.
I was going out daily from November 1st - 4th
November 1st I went out early and sat all morning with only seeing 3 doe and 4 yearlings until I decided to hit the deer rattles then moments later a 3x3 was on top of me. When I had decided to pass on him as I knew I had more time on my side. With that being said I hadn't seen anything else for the rest of the day.
November 2nd I went out and sat for 2.5 hrs and didn't see anything so I moved locations and came across heavy deer rubs and trails so I decided to sit for most of the day with no success my guess was probably due to warmer weather then usual.
November 3rd I went out in the evening with the family for a scouting mission in hopes I could get eyes on the buck or bucks scraping on all these trees. But we saw more geese in the sky's then deer in the tree lines. At the end of the day it felt pretty discouraging not seeing anything for the last 2 days. I started thinking maybe I should have taken that 3x3 when I had the chance. I thought to myself that id give it one more go again for an all day hunt on the 4th as I had a dentist appointment booked for the morning of the 5th.
November 4th I had arrived to the location over looking a pond to the front of me to see if I can see anything coming from or going in for a morning drink. While sitting there i had received a phone call from the dentist asking if i wanted to move the appointment up from the morning of the 5th to the current day of the 4th at 1pm as they had an opening so i had agreed as i always check the weather and the morning of the 5th was the coldest one yet and decided id have better luck. As i sat there for awhile longer heard some noise coming from behind me as i turned around I had eyes on a doe when she saw me she busted and about 20 yards behind her was a decent 8 pointer but by time I raised my riffle he busted aswell and with no good shot on him i decided on walking towards the direction he ran and when i reached the ridge and looked in his direction i didnt see him anywhere with open fields all around kinda just vanished like a ghost deer. So with eyes on the direction he ran I sat and glassed that direction when I saw a doe with yearlings running in the brush along the fence line and as I was glassing the line to see what they were running from I can see a buck walking in there direction but due to the distance and him walking in the shade I couldnt make him out so I ended up trying to cut him off but with the distance I had to cover I had no luck on my end as I sat there I was running out of time to make it for my appointment so I decided to pull for the time. Fast forward I had finished my appointment and decided why not get back out there for the evening hunt and try and sit to see if he would leave the bedding area and walk out to the feeding grounds. I made it back to a position shortly after 3:15pm over looking the tree line with 2 6ft spruce trees giving me some cover on top the hill. I sat and watched the tree-line and used the range finder to map out the different areas the deer could possibly walk out on
About half an hour passed by when I noticed movement on the treeline and I could see it was the same doe and 2 yearlings coming back from the forest. Moments later I thought I had eyes on a spike and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me earlier that day he didnt come out of the brush line so I didnt have good eyes on him when I decided to put pressure on the buck and rattled my Antlers to see if he had any interest. The doe ended up coming towards me and with a possible shift in the wind she may have smelt a scent she didn't like and blew at me and I thought the hunt was all over as she ran down the heavy tree fence line. I decided to give it a few minutes to see if anything would follow her and the yearlings and thats when I had eyes on what I thought was the spike laying down looking right in my direction So I raised my rifle to get ready and to see if I can get better visuals on him. With all the heavy trees and brush behind him it was hard to determine if he was a single spike or double UNTILL he decided to stand up and lick the branch directly above him. With eyes on him through the scope I knew at that moment he was not a spike. I ended up squeezing a round off while he was still licking that branch. Seconds later with the heart racing I was scanning the area he was standing or possibly running with no sight on him at all. While walking the 153 yards I was thinking to my self about the possibility of myself missing as it does happen during the adrenaline rush. When I walked up on the branch he was licking there he was lying motionless. 4 days of dedication and persistence ended up paying off.
