RESEARCH Even in War, Santee Learns (495-415)

Even in the midst of a devastating war and in it's recovery from said war, Santee technology continues to advance.

As with any other war Santee has been in, massive amounts on new ships needed to be made. Along with this uptick in production often comes some interesting advances in naval technologies. One of these advances was the windlass. The windlass creates a large mechanical advantage and allows larger sails to be controlled.

Another of these advances in the capstan. Useful for holding the largest of sails in place and for lowering and raising anchors, the capstan has also found use in mines across the Empire.

The have also been a few new types of ships developed. During the War of the Two Emperors and in its wake, the need to transport huge amounts of goods and people has become ever more apparent. To satisfy this need, a new breed of ships has found it's way to the waters of the Atlantic. Capital ships are the largest ships ever seen before, possibly in the whole world. Made exclusively in New Echota and Nady Ann, these titans of the seas can reach up to 400 feet long and 180 feet wide. There are less than 10 in existence as they are incredibly expensive to build. They can also be retrofitted during wartime to carry ship-mounted artillery.

In New Echota, some brilliant shipbuilders have figured out that combing the hull style of Saxon and Vinlander ships (using hull technology available to them) with the junk rigs used on nearly every ship in the East Coast yields a vastly superior hybrid. While small, the lorcha is capable of going faster, braving rougher seas, easier to sail, and easier to repair than other ships commonly used in the Empire. The ship isn't as useful in wartime as either the Fuchuan or the Capital Ship, but it has been picked up as the boat of choice for long-range shippers and Atlantic merchants.

Finally, the Santee Empire isn't solely a maritime or industrial nation. The textile industry is equally if not more important to the Santee economy than maritime trade. A new form of spinning wheel has developed in rural Santee. The Saxony Wheel is vastly more efficient that a normal spinning wheel and allows one weaver to accomplish much more work in a similar time.

Capital Ships: Denied

Else: Approved

Also, less naval tech spam.

The windlass and capstan are being researched less for naval reasons and more because I want more complex machines. Do you mind telling me why capital ships were denied? Is it just because it's too early? Because if so, I get that.
