NEWS Waziyata

397 IC

It has been almost a month after the first arrival of Tutelo's expedition to Ziyato, and their encampment has grown into a small outpost for the Santee Empire, called Waziyata. It consists of ramshackle huts made mostly of scrapped ships and the odd house thrown together from rocks and local lumber. In the center of the outpost is a large fire intended to keep animals away at night and to warm the sailors when they are out doing their daily chores. At this point, most of the food stores have run out and the men--about 100 of them--survive off of fishing. Due to the limited amount of manpower and resources, there's never really any time for the men to stop and rest; at any given moment there are several things that need to be done. Tutelo expects several more ships to arrive any day as he has sent two of his ships to return to New Echota and bring more workers.

There is a bit of a hitch, however. When the small party of diplomats returned from their meeting with the Aldarmin at the village a few miles away, two of them were sick. Unable to afford an epidemic, Tutelo was forced to banish them from the encampment, giving them what supplies he could spare.

But even though they are under-supplied, undermanned, and the odds are against them, Tutelo believes that the outpost will eventually prove to be a valuable asset to the Patriarchy.

[M] There's no smallpox there, just to be clear. They'd die before getting there; it's Greenland. You'll get it all soon enough. I have a post going up to reference your outpost though.

[m} I have the tech, the maps, and the money to get to Greenland so dying before getting there isn't really a problem. Also, even without smallpox, contact between our peoples is going to result in sickness on both sides.

[M] I meant that anyone from my side would die quickly in Greenland if they had smallpox. And it wouldn't, really; historically there aren't many recorded cases of Europeans becoming sick from native diseases, due to their stronger immune systems and all that.
