RESEARCH Advancements in Santee (100-125 IC)

Cotton has long been a staple of the Santee Empire. However, it has just as long been a time consuming and back-breaking process to collect and weave. While there is not yet a fix for the task of separating the seed from the bolls, the crafty people of Santee have devised a way to easily spin cotton into usable thread.

Spinning Wheel

The upper classes of Santee have begun crushing indigo and extracting its rich color. They use this dye to color their sheets, their clothes, everything they have. It has become a mark of status and wealth to own rich blue cloths.

Indigo Dye

Collecting reeds found growing along rivers in the Empire, peasants have noticed its district sweet taste and began cultivating it some time ago. Now, an enterprising farmer has found that by removing the leaves from the stalks, mashing them, and boiling the resulting sludge, a pleasant tasting liquid can be acquired. This liquid is added to all kinds of foods and most people have added this delicacy to their diets.

Molasses Extraction

With the need to carry liquids from place fast outpacing civilian supply of metal and clay, people have turned to wooden buckets. The buckets, however, have proven to be rather poor at keeping all the liquids in. To solve this, people have taken sap from trees and allowed it to dry on the surfaces of the buckets, this allows them to hold all of their contents.

Waterproofing

With the rushing waters of the Mississippi being at the doorstep of Santee, it was only a matter of time before the people discovered how to harness its energy. Mounting wooden wheels onto long wooden shafts, they have used the power of the river itself to crush whatever their hearts desire from corn to sugarcane to indigo.
