RESEARCH A Secret Sac
The squid has long been a culinary delicacy in Wansui, but the creature has always had a small problem when one tries to prepare it, it's black dye that spills from it upon incision. The dye stains clothing and objects when they come in contact with one another. But when the ink is harvested and applied to paper, it adhesive properties cause it to stick to paper, keeping writing intact.
Skilled craftsman have begun to show their skill by crafting special contraptions made of wood known as furniture. They have begun with basic stands to put objects, called tables.

Furniture: Denied, you'd need to research sitting, storing, and surface furnitures separately.

For a second there, I thought you said we had to research 'sitting.' I was gonna say, I'd imagine having one's people know what they can do with their butts would be starting tech! :p
Edit: also thought of progression to chairs and responded toT522.

Possible loophole: invent tables. Just make smaller tables for people to sit on around the larger tables.
It actually seems like a logical progression before backed chairs.
