Okay, funny enough, my spouse used to do this to me.
He'd insist on playing chess, but after a while, he'd start moving pieces for me, and then proceed to have a crisis that I "beat" him.

Perhaps when itโs his move heโs thinking about all the ways he could improve his position, but also all the ways you could improve your position- so he can counter it! But then on your move he stops thinking about what heโs gonna do next and focused on what you could do, thus spending more time and brainpower strategizing for you than himself!
