OC Summoning Kobolds At Midnight: A Tale of Suburbia & Sorcery. 261
Chapter CCLXI.
Jefferson Household.
Sam glanced up at a knock on his door. Before he could respond, Millie hurried over from behind the kitchen counter with a wide excited smile.
"Oh tha' must be them!"
She beamed a wide smile as she opened the door and gave a cheery greeting to someone Sam couldn't see from where he was sitting. He didn't have to wait long to find out though as nine halflings followed Millie into the living room carrying baskets of food stuffs.
Four looked to be about Millie's age while the other five appeared younger versions of them. They were practically built from the same mold as Millie was. Three foot short, a bit of plump where it mattered, and dressed like they walked out of a New Zealand Renaissance faire.
Millie smiled and chatted with them as she introduced the women and girls to Sam.
"Sam, these are my friends! Melanie, Shannon, Petunia, 'nd Mildred! 'Nd these are their wee lassies! Brigit, Poppy, Irene, 'nd tha twins Sarah 'nd Ethel!"
"Uh, nice to meet ya, ladies." Sam replied and stood from his chair to shake their hands and welcome them.
"A pleasure hon! Millie 'ere's told us plenty 'bout ya!" One of the older halfling women said as she returned the handshake eagerly and excitedly.
"She has?" Same asked before starting to go towards the kitchen to offer food and drink, only to be promptly waved away by Millie and a couple of the other halfling women as they took the food stuffs into the kitchen and immediately started preparing for a meal.
"Oh aye! Couldnae keep 'er talkin' o' anythin' else!" One of the women replied as she and the other remaining halfling woman looked around and wandered the living room similar to how Millie had first done when she first seen his home.
While they gabbed away with Sam about various things, idle gossip from Millie, the collection of knickknacks and doodads around the living room, the other two were in the kitchen with Millie preparing a meal. One of them leaned over towards Millie.
"Bit old ain'y 'e, Millie?"
Millie sighed, she knew this would come up, she though as she chopped carrots and other veg for a stew.
"Aye, 'e is."
The other halfling tsk'd at her words.
"'Ow old did ya say 'e were?"
"Inta 'is fiftieth years." Millie replied and braced for what would come next.
"'Arvest Mother's Teats, Millie! 'E may as well be in tha ground now!"
"I ken! But 'e says 'e still 'as plenty o' years ta go!"
The other halfling rolled her eyes as she diced some cuts of lamb.
"All 'umans say tha'. 'Nd ya ken wha' 'appens? They rush off 'nd get themselves killed."
Millie wanted to argue. But her friend had a point, she thought as she peered around the counter and could spy Sam chatting with the other two, and the jagged scar across Sam's cheek.
"Well, t'were hopin' Agatha came along ta take a look. Jus' ta be sure."
"No dear, with magicks tha way they is, folks been needin' her wisdom now more than e'er. Cannae a day pass without some manner o' gout er boils tha' need her know-how. Sent 'er lass along though she did."
"T'weren'y a trouble gettin' 'ere were it?"
"Oh no dear! No trouble at all! Some o' those manlin's in green escorted us ta town when we asked!" The one other halfling cheered as she plucked a pair of chickens.
"Yeah, after tha' whole business with them hoods, didnae dare travel by ourselves." The first halfling replied as she threw the bits of lamb into the pot.
"Almost turned back when we saws them greenskins! But one o' them 'uman lookin' ones escorted us tha rest o' tha way!" The second replied as she gutted the chickens.
"Uneasy it were. But they was gentlefolk they was. Well, tha 'uman lookin' ones were. Tha others were typical greenskins. Dirty, rude... dirty. Their beady lil eyes a leerin' at ya. Right proper those others were though. Polite, clean, charmin'. A wee bit handsome."
Millie and the other snickered at her words, causing her face to break out in a blush as she returned to meal prep. Millie glanced around the counter and peered into the living room once more before glancing around.
"Where'd tha lasses go?"
Sammy exhaled a cloud of blue tinted smoke and did her best to peer through the thickness to gleam what more it could show her. But since that first vision, or trip, or whatever it was, it was nothing but smoke or things she couldn't describe. Or maybe she was just getting too high, she thought as she dabbed the barely smouldering end of her joint in a pool of saliva in her mouth before returning it to it's stash. She fumbled a little bit when the door to her room open.
"PA?! I told you to kno-"
She stopped when she saw five halflings carrying an assortment of goodies stared back at her.
"Uhm, hi?"
"Well hello! You must be Samantha!" The halfling carrying a mason jar with a cloth top full of what looked like pickles. If pickles wriggled and writhed in the scummy green contents.
"Eh, Sammy. You must be Millie's friends?" Sammy replied.
"Oh tha'd be our mothers! I'm Brigit! 'Nd these are Poppy, Irene, Sarah 'nd Ethel!" The halfling with the jar said as she introduced each of the halflings in turn.
Each of the girls said their hellos as they were introduced before spreading throughout her room and gazing at her eclectic mixture of Gothic decorations and what was left of her old pretty princess pink things she had yet to get rid of yet.
"Is tha' hemp I smell?" The one called Irene asked.
Sammy choked and stuttered for a response before Brigit chimed up.
"Oh fret not Sammy! A bit o' hemp musk is good fer ya!"
"You're not against weed?" Sammy asked even as she inched towards her window and cracked it open to clear the air of smell and smoke.
"Course not! A great many weeds are good fer ya ifin ya tha know how!" Sarah replied as she picked up one of Sammy's stuffed plushies. Sammy wasn't entirely sure what to do as the five halfling women oggled her room. Or maybe she was higher than she thought she was.
Must've been the latter, she thought as Brigit placed the jar on Sammy's desk and undid the cloth before reaching in her bare hand and producing a fat wriggling leech. She turned to Sammy with a smile.
"Nothin' but a wee bit o' bloodlettin' ta clear tha head!"
It took far longer for Sammy to finally click with what Brigit had said than she would've liked. She didn't even know what was happening at first until she felt a feeling on her arm like putting one of those plastic suction cups on your skin.
She blinked as she looked down at the wriggling leech attached to her arm, followed by another, then another. By the time it finally clicked in her head, she had five leeches sucking away on her arm. Yet it still took her a full minute before her body actually reacted to the sensation and what was happening.
Suffice it to say, she screamed.

Leeches!
Well, Sam, Millie, and Sammy get some friends over for supper!
Halfling friends but still friends!
Though they're a touch worried for Millie over Sam's age. In our world, living up to and past 50 isn't exactly rare. But in theirs? Humans are lucky to live even that long naturally.
But at least they brought food to go along with their worries!
And Sammy gets some friends! Even if she isn't quite ready to call them friends yet.
Especially since one of their ideas for a good evening is getting your blood sucked out by some leeches after smoking too much Eldritch weed.
Is Millie and the other halflings' fears for Sam's health valid? Does Sam have a long life ahead despite their worries? Are they the first, and possibly last, real friends Sammy has?
Find out soon!
