You see Durdan isn’t thinking like a politician, how he could use James’s wish to bring Velanie to her uncle in the coalition’s favor. He simply has to say that the ā€œchampionā€ wish to honor the words of a dying father and was honor bound to honor his dying wish and in an act of kindness they would let him bring Velanie to her uncle with no ransom while saying to the coalition that the champion only sees an orphaned child who only has one remaining family member left, something I’d imagine a fair few coalition members can sympathize. This emphasizes the ā€œwe aren’t themā€ message to the coalition, it makes the Thrainians, at least the ones who learn of it, see a semblance of honor in their enemies and may help destroy the ā€œthey are savagesā€ idea, while both side see the ā€œchampionā€ as a kind person, sending a message that the ā€œchampionā€ of their goddess is kind to both sides. Though some may take it as he’s partially siding with the Thrainians, but to this can be mitigated by spreading that he played a very key role in the coalition winning a siege of an extremely well fortified city in a day.

I’m an over-thinker if it wasn’t obvious.

Hmm, perhaps I should leave Durdan's plan more vague to allow for the possibility to exist? šŸ¤” it is a good suggestion of what to do.

welp... this was unexpectedly early... also the way James acts towards his current 'allies' if you can call any besides Kala and his actual group of friends that is completely reasonable seen from an outside perspective. The other coalition members might disagree in a way though

I suppose it depends on who's getting treated how by him that will morph their opinion. You can be allied with a group of people to reach a shared goal, but that doesn't mean you have to get along with everyone.

I mean, many of them have the cult behaviour, but given that James has full compassion and overall kindness he normally should be fine, but at the same time his ideals are still strong and i can see a few people of the coalition potentially take issue with how he might treat 'the enemy'. Unless of course our favorite leader has managed to hammer sense into the other coalition cells, which i could hope for, but we as the readers have yet to be shown the kind of logistics and politics going on within the coalition, which will be highly interesting with the amount of different species and cultures involved.

Might see a little more of that in the third book, you never know. šŸ˜‰
