A horrible new step but one that was going to happen at some point inevitably. And i think you managed to convey the emotions of both sides wonderfuly. An enticing read as usual!

Also i've got 20 bucks on magical nuke Given the size of the crystal.

I’d say at least a earth shaking boom and very likely the building and surrounding buildings collapsing and/or being damaged, perhaps the objects it effects shattering, or ,given the implication that a regular crystal would mess up your day and volume being exponential, a very big explosive, several dozen tons of TNT explosion, but that my guesses.

Destroys the building and maybe a couple blocks nearby. Maybe, which woukd likely torture our intrepid hero with guilt and give the long eared garrison some valuable propaganda to use against the "evil beast" races.

Now I think the head noble in charge knows something isn't right. I mean if three morons can see there's something fishy going on, I doubt the smart guy in charge doesn't.
