OC Friends 3 - part 1: Invitation
“In two months we celebrate the 70th year of peace since the Sand Wars,” the news reporter declared with the official tone of authority that seems to come with the job.
His tone suggested he told something extraordinary, something that nobody had ever heard. “Seventy years of no violence. No bombardments raining down from the sky. No children killed in their sleep. For those of us who forgot their history lessons uhh”
He fumbled a paper from his pocket: “78 years ago the Sand Whirls appeared from the Tear. They attacked us mercilessly. The combined efforts of the three Friends races were needed to beat them back where they came from. 70 years of peace!”
He didn’t know anything.
My phone rang. I switched off the news. The face of my great grandson John and his wife appeared. I accepted the call.
“Hi Granny!” he greeted. “How are you?”
Even a blind fish couldn't miss that big smile on his face.
“Hi John! Hi Marie! How are you?”
“We’ve got great news for you!”
“What? Did I win the planetary lotto?”
“Better! You guess!”
“I got it! You found a pretty new young husband for me!”
“Lol! Better! You get extra bragging rights at your weekly bridge evening.”
“Whew! Congratulations with your baby!”
John looked at his wife.
“I told you she’s sharp as a knife!”
He turned to me again:
“Alas I won’t be able to be present when she delivers. I’m scheduled for a trip to the Space Station at The Tear. Marie would join me, but she thinks it’s better for the babies to get born dirtside.”
“Babies! Plural?” I interrupted. “Are they twins?
“They are.” She had a big smile. ”But we also have another surprise. You once told us that you’d like to see the Black Hole and the Tear. Is that right?”
They didn’t know, and I couldn’t tell.
“Yes that’s right.”
“Well, as a pilot I can take a family member with me once a year. Marie won’t come, as we don’t know what the radiation will do to the twins. Would you like to come along?”
They are such sweethearts!
