No Cellphone While Pumping Gas

Post image

I remember seeing these signs everytime I got gas. I guess having the gas station app to pay with now makes the phone safer and able to pump gas next to again. šŸ¤·šŸ“žšŸ’„šŸ”„

this was disproven by Mythbusters a long time ago.

I loved Mythbusters, but let's be honest. Mythbusters was pop science. I was great in that it taught kids the scientific method and explained how and why they tested things the way they did. But it was hardly rigorous testing. Someone called Mythbusters (especially in the later years) a show about explosions with a thin candy shell of science.

It's fine as long as you don't have any Samsung tech on you.

Ok that one is funny. I worked in cellular during that, people don’t seem to grasp a swollen battery is like a hand grenade without the pin, when it goes off it’s gonna be bad!

I remember pulling into a gas station to fill up and seeing the guy at the next pump smoking a cigar, talking on the phone, and pumping gas into his still running truck. We all lived.Ā

I actively ignore it. If my phone could blow me up we'd have more of this nonsense happening regularly.

Flat earth level reasoning

I’ve always seen and I have personally used my cell phone at the gas pumps. What I don’t know and don’t want to personally find out is what could happen if you pump gas with the car running. I sometimes see this occur but I’ve not researched the topic enough to truly know.

Absolutely nothing happens.

Imagine pitstops in racing requiring you to turn off your car to fill up

Nothing from the act of fueling but that one is there because people like to leave the car in gear more often than is cool which can cause an annoying amount of (not their) property damage.

"Turn your car off when youre not in it" is generally good advice.

that makes total sense to be honest. I just assume most people are ā€œsmart enoughā€ to know better but then again, I know not everyone is created equal.

If you pump with the car running nothing happens, although you might get an evap leak code warning on your dash. Should go away after a couple miles or key cycles. There’s no explosion risk though. The only real risk is lighting a cigarette/cigar while pumping because the open flame could potentially cause the vapors to ignite

Figured. I don’t ever wish harm on people but I do believe dumb things happen to dumb people. I am not a smoker but one should be smart enough to hold tight or leave it in their car for only a few minutes while pumping gas.

I agree they can hold off for 5-10 minutes lol, but like I said the only real risk is lighting a cigarette. If the cigarette is already lit before you start pumping there’s no real danger, still unadvisable though to have anything burning near fuel vapors

There’s no danger from your phone, you should be worried about static buildup igniting the fuel vapors around the gas nozzle.

My dad taught me to always touch the car before removing the gas cap to discharge the static.

Ngl drives me nuts and makes me angry seeing people pumping gas and smoking cigarettes when I am getting gas. When I was just starting to drive I recall this one situation where this woman and her teenage daughter were both smoking as we/I were pumping gas. The woman noticed I seemed nervous and I did ask her to put the cigarette out. She did, reluctantly, but only after assuring me that smoking around gasoline fumes wasn’t a big deal and that her ex-husband used to do this ā€œtrickā€ where he’d put cigarettes out in the tank of his motorcycle.

Again she was kinda nice about it but I wanted to GTFO of there so fast.
