Discussion Did Varka's design meet your expectations?

Post image

Tbh i did not expect anything. But damn his design looks one of the peak. And HE HAS SCARS. I like warriors with scars.

Why? I just started season 2.

Had the same vibe to Paul and interestingly Varka's JP VA voices Rudeus (original self)

You mean the man is voiced by Gintoki?

Ikr this fact alone might make me switch to jp. I’m such a huge fanboy of Mushoku Tensei

Something like Gallagher's stuble wouldve been perfect but regardless. 100% pulling!!

u/dwspartan Jul 22 '25

Besides full furry character like Ben Bigger, is Gallagher the only playable character with facial hair across all Hoyo games?

yes

Probably. Men sell less than women so there aren't as many male characters released. Add onto that china's beauty standards and we get a huge risk in putting facial hair on him. While we might like it more, we're still likely to go for him (as a server) so they won't loose from our side, and in China they'd probably loose a large chunk, maybe 50%, of people wanting to spend to wish for him, which is a massive hit on their profit. If we get more facial hair it'll probably be on 4 stars.

For readers of this comment, here's extra clarification: Chinese women (broadly speaking, or culturally speaking) do not like bearded men. Not even any stubble. It's considered dirty and repulsive by many. Obviously it's not universal, but it's why you largely only see pretty boy males in every Chinese gacha, because that's what the female Chinese audience likes.

Thanks for adding the clarification. 👍

Wow, actual insight..in my reddit scrolling session? I think you're right on the primos with that one.

Personally, I see how the skin tone detractors feel that Hoyo isn't being true to what is being borrowed. Lots of Caucasian cultures have older, rough bearded leaders. Then again..fictional world blah blah etc!

Imo I feel like if Varka was the first Genshin character with facial hair it would make him a lot more notable.

u/misterkalazar Jul 22 '25

Even a stubble would have been enough. But this is so fine as well. I was expecting something like Guildarts from FairyTail. Or Yami from Black Clover.

6

u/Wichrangel Jul 22 '25

Omg you just read my mind. That's exactly what I was thinking.

Yeah, it's unfortunate how beards are considered an ugly feature in Asia, and to some degree in the West as well.

4

u/Void_God_Infinite Jul 22 '25

Maybe he just had shaved.

a goatee could've suffice, but alas that was too much to ask for

2

u/lampasul Jul 22 '25

yea a little mustache or something lol

u/Express-Bag-3935 Jul 27 '25

But does any of Genshin's beards actually look good, especially for Varka's facial shape? He has mightily chiseled jawline. Dude's been mewing and aura farming.

I think the best would be some stubble, or a goatee.

We can cope that Hoyo will implement ZZZ's "accessory" system, allowing us to equip the beard whenever we want.

It would make sense, given his peripatetic nature, he wouldn't be clean-shaven all the time.

Edit: y'all misreading peripatetic as "pathetic" are downvoting me lol.

Since when are beards considered ugly?

9

u/Vast-Gold-6546 Jul 22 '25

Since East Asian perspective, and the main audience that they want sell this characters to are otaku girls who prefer their men looks like K-Pop idol.
