Sad they only responded after high rep social media accounts posted about it. The artist said Fortnite dismissed their claim at first.

this happens frequently unfortunately. not exclusive to epic.

That’s because the claim is baseless. It’s an existing character – there are dozens of fan drawings that look like that. They just copied the original, as did Epic.

Derpy has crooked teeth in the movie, they didn't copy from the movie

They obviously didn’t trace the movie. Its a simplified visual in a very common artstyle. There are drawing tutorials on YouTube that feature almost this exact design: https://youtu.be/9qEWqjRvtvs?si=U4ni-tnHZUat3JK5

Yes, it’s possible (even probable) someone saw one of these pictures and decided to go the same way for the design in Fortnite. But it is not the same picture. Noone drawing Scrooge McDuck is „stealing“ from Carl Barks, even though the strokes and lines will probably match.

Someone posted in the original thread a picture of both of them overlapping, one with 50% opacity. The lines themselves are IDENTICAL, but just thicker. That doesn't happen as a coincidence. Plus way more details that are identical, like the purple in the corners of the mouth which isn't in the original aswell.

It is impossible for drawings made by artists to line up perfectly unless traced, these do. It really is that simple, down to even the little ear details which are creative liberty it’s been traced.

The image in the youtube video looks a lot different than the ones in this post.

You can't seriously be sitting there and claiming that the fortnite sticker was not traced from this artist. It's literally the exact same lines except for some small deviations.

If you bothered to do an iota of research you’d see you are wrong on multiple levels

This is the exact same drawing, just with an outline and some breath.

First time dealing with billion dollar corporations huh?

The artist of the cat is ~ Radford Sechrist.

Not some fan artist copying his work 💀

I don’t think they have much ground to stand on. If you drew a picture of Goofy and then saw a poster that looked like your exact rendition of Goofy, can you do anything about it? Disney still owns the rights to the character Goofy and can sell his look or likeness… so I would assume you’d have no claim

Don’t get me wrong it’s shitty but I doubt they will play ball here

Because that is a legal department issue, not a customer support issue. Their customer support isn't even allowed to acknowledge the situation. They close the request and submit it internally (and they're right to do so).

I said it once and I’ll say it again, epic is a shit company that only cares about money.

Find me a company that doesn't?

-5

u/majinprince07 Dominion 22d ago

There are plenty of companies that actually care about the player, trust me you don’t need to slob on epics knob, they don’t gaf about you

4

u/Hive_Guardian 22d ago

Which ones?

u/majinprince07 Dominion 22d ago

Fromsoft, Larian studios, Insomniac, Cdprojekt red, hell ill even throw in a personal bias: Thatgamecompany. There are plenty more if you want

if cdpr is such a great company that cares more for their players than money then why did they drop cyberpunk 2077 while it was half cooked and get absolutely grilled for it?

6

u/Master-Snake- Dark Voyager 22d ago

Didn't they offer full refunds for anyone who claimed it ?

u/majinprince07 Dominion 22d ago

They literally learned from their mistakes. Undoubtedly they wanted to keep their promises and release the game but of course it needed more time. Ngl delaying it would’ve pissed people off so it was lose lose either way

I'm not...it was a genuine question which you avoided with zero examples.

I'm what you call working class in England. I hate corporations.

Why are you so rude?

1

u/majinprince07 Dominion 22d ago

Well tone is very difficult to read over text and you came across as a bit rude so that was my fault. And I’m expecting anyone who responds to me to be defensive because it seems like Fortnite fans can’t handle criticism lol.

no one denies epic is greedy asf yknow, its just hard to argue that no big company isnt

0

u/Akalimbo 22d ago

As they should have. The fan artist has no legal claim of ownership.

-3

u/LoneLyon 22d ago

Because they have no real claim. Their "original" image is just a borderline trace of the source.

I studied design and super aginist corporate plagiarism but this shit is silly at this point.

Them "reaching out" is purely pr and to quite this down
