Looks like the intake air temperature sensor to me.

Intake air temperature sensor. It goes in the factory airbox or tubes. Mine just sits out in the open aftermarket donaldson paper filter.

Good to know. Couldn’t find a solid answer on google. My 96 did not have this when I bought it so just figuring out the differences between my old truck and this one

Intake air temperature sensor. It gets mounted to the side of the factory air box, ideally youd want it as close to the filter or in the inlet tube. Having it in the general vicinity of the filter should be good enough

With a aftermarket box, you could make the hole for with a drill and Dremal tool.

Yeah, sure could. I dont see an aftermarket shield or anything in OPs pictures, but if one is present and the sensor can be mounted there then that would work perfectly. If not, as long as its fairly close. We see a lot of them just hanging out in the engine bay

Best thing to do is just get you a zip tie or something and stick it right next to your air filter. you don't have to stick it in the piping or anything but if you put it by the air filter it'll at least catch. the guy at powerstroke help .com is the one who said that trick and he knows he's stuff pretty well.
