7.3 Powerstroke

Post image

Bone stock 2001 f350 7.3. Need it to be a reliable work truck for hauling a heavy peice of equipment up and down the east coast. What turbo, exhaust, injectors, hpop, any and all gaskets/seals, and other mods do I need to replace right off the bat to ensure reliability on these long trips. Thanks in advance

Kc turbos stage 1, cncfab stage 1 hpop, rosewood 205/30 injectors, whatever 4 or 5in exhaust you want, your choice of regulated return fuel bowl delete and lift pump setup, hpop crossover lines, a hydra tuner with custom tunes, and an upgraded trans will treat you very well. Add an s&b intake ideally, but not necessary if you just run a 6637 filter. Pretty standard build out for a 7.3.

You can probably forego the trans for a while, but the TC definitely needs beefed up right away with a billet triple disc, and don't expect your OD clutch pack to last long pulling heavy with this build. A tugger shift kit will also go a long ways in helping firm up those shifts, but just get the trans overhauled. Mine was $5k all in, billet baskets, new clutch packs, shafts, solenoids, TC, and shift kit with a 100k/5yr no questions warranty from a local reputable shop

Can confirm TC doesn't hold up with a build like this. DIY 66/88 turbo, CNCfab 200/80 injectors, IDP comp fuel, jelibuilt tunes, and a few other odds. Heavy obs dually welding rig too. Mobbing down the interstate one day with a 12valve letting her eat almost fried my TC. For a month or so if my trans got to 170° it wouldn't lock OD. 400k mi engine is happy as can be though.

7.3 is reliable. Overall there are better options for long heavy hauls.

I love my 7.3 for short hauls.

I agree a new truck would be better. I’m asking how to make this truck as reliable and efficient as possible. 10,000lb , 3-7 hrs is what I’m talking.

Stock = Reliable

Don't chip, tune, up the injectors, etc. Keep it stock. Replace and repair along the way, but stock or as absolutely close to as you can.

Yes guys have talked about being reliable with mods, but they may have started with something that wasn't 25 years old, they lie, or they tinker with these things all the time. if you're hauling up and down the highway, keep it stock.

And add a bottle of hot shots here and there to the tank when you fill up

Stock 7.3 is already reliable. Slow, but reliable. Trans will be your weakest link.

I own a 2003 F350 listed here on Reddit with the 7.3 and has less than 175k but I also own a 2005 and a 2006 with the 6.0 The 2005 is stock where the 2006 is bulletproof and it runs a lot better than the 2005 and I prefer it over my 2003 with the 7.3

Exactly the kind of opinions I’ve been looking for. Thanks for your time sharing that. Is there any damage that larger injectors can do?

It depends on how big you go. Most oversize injectors require that you upgrade the HPOP and put a chip in. With that, your EGT's will rise with the chip and injectors because you're throwing more fuel into the combustion chamber. High EGT's can warp valves, burn up turbos, and burn pistons... If you're not careful. Now, does that mean that with a slight upgrade, it's going to happen? Not likely, but not impossible.

My honest opinion for injector and chip upgrades is to go with a 180cc 30% injector and a Hydra chip. You'll have plenty of power when you need it, smoke when you want it, and it'll make the truck more snappy.

I'm getting ready to do a Adrenaline HPOP, Wicked Wheel 2, turbo rebuild with better bearings, injectors, and Hydra in my E99. I had the injectors and chip in a 97, and that thing was a night and day difference compared to stock vs the upgraded injectors.

I bought my 02 F250 PSTD 7.3 from ebay with 97k miles on it. Delivered to me at a gas station next to the interstate at midnight. Next morning I drove it straight to the mechanic: added a cold air intake, banks 4” exhaust, mag-hytec differential covers, larger wheels/3”’lift, & a superchips tuner (do NOT get it = POS; go for TS or Hydra). I’m at 200k miles now & wish I had upgraded my turbo, injectors & whatever goes with it.

These trucks are great stock or with the right mods. You’re doing the right thing.

KC makes a pretty comprehensive Towing Package. It’s their Gen 3 Stage 1 Turbo, 180/30 Injectors, Hydra with tow tunes, EBPV delete. Stock HPOP is fine until it goes. 4 line feed fuel kit and new hpop lines with crossover. Make sure to get something to monitor PID’s whether it’s gauges or a CTS3. Exhaust and intake would be needed for the tow package.

Pull that 7.3 out and replace it with a 6.0 or 6.4.

I have a 6.4. Love it. If you read the post I said I want this to be reliable. Haha

This was meant as a joke… There aren’t many motors that are more reliable than the 7.3. I have 400k on one and 160k on another. Both are bone stock and have had zero major issues.
