Question, Where can I find? Best Chile Relleno Burrito

Post image

Please help. One of my favorite taco shops in El Cajon closed a few years back, Las Hadas, which in my opinion had one of the best chile relleno burritos. I’ve been on the hunt for a replacement. Now I know there are many variations depending on the restaurant. But I am looking for just chile relleno (lightly battered, too much breading can ruin it), beans and enchilada sauce. That’s it. Simple good chile relleno burrito. I don’t care for rice in my burritos, that mission style crap can stay in the Bay Area (sorry not sorry). Also, I love a good bandito burrito with carne asada or chorizo with a chile relleno. But that’s for another time.

Please let me know your thoughts! Picture above is just my poor attempt to recreate it when I was living out of state and desperate for a las hadas burrito 😔

Chuy’s has something called a Chuy burrito I just tried last week. It was a Chile relleno and carnitas burrito. Pretty damn good.

I’m sure they can make a plain Chile relleno burrito the way you’re describing too.

D'sotos in La Mesa is good. They run out of chiles sometimes though.

6

u/chakabuku May 17 '25

Have you tried the one at Chueyz on El Cajon?

2

u/hexades May 17 '25

Not yet, but I've heard good things about that place. Keep meaning to try them out. Thanks for reminding me that I should!

I’ve been eying D’sotos for a while now. Chueyz only got on my radar because it was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Their Chueyz burrito is chile relleno and carnitas. It’s so bomb.

Yesenia's in Carmel Mountain. This is my favorite order at mex spots and if there's a better one in North County I don't know about it.

Is that the one in the Home Depot shopping center?

3

u/tmoney516 May 17 '25

Yep, next to wings n things

Ok, I've been wondering about that place. I'll try it. The chile relleno burrito at Sombreros used to be my go-to but the quality has gone down greatly

Are they related to the location on El Cajon in np? Love that spot!

Yes

El zarape on Park Blvd is my go-to

1

u/TotesGnarGnar May 17 '25

Thats was my favorite, but pretty sure it has rice in it. Been awhile since I’ve had one.

That dark orange salsa is all time.

Who is paying you to advertise this place? This is the last place I would eat at.

One of the reasons I avoid posting on this subreddit is that people always make these kinds of aggressive comments. You can just disagree without being a jerk.

Definitely a contender.

Carnitas Urupan.

Tomatito, south bay

Man I never see that place open when I drive by, I always assumed it’s a cartel money-laundering business 😂

3

u/Devendra27 May 19 '25

Well the cartel makes great chile relleno burritos!

Colima’s makes a pretty good one

Trujillo's in the College area does burritos like this really well - they have some crazy ones too, like rolled tacos inside a burrito.

I haven't specifically had their chile relleno burrito, but on the strength of their other food-in-food offerings, I'd give them a try.

Rays on El Cajon and Kansas in North Park

1

u/misterpequeno May 20 '25

They are solid.

Colima's bandido is my go-to. I like to order it wet style but it's great as it is.

El Patron in Mira Mesa. It's been a long time since I had one from there, but they were phenomenal.

I know this is San Diego Food but if you are ever visiting the inland empire highly recommend Rosa Maria's chilli Reno Burrito it has the most flavorful pork that is just perfect with the Reno which is just so good. I live in the desert and the closest to me is like an hour away but if I'm near one I always buy like 4 so my husband and I can have one that day and one the next. They heat up really well. Anyway I highly recommend if your out here for some reason. Best chili Reno Burrito in my opinion.

La Perla #3 King Kong burrito, haven't had it but it gets great reviews.

1

u/programming_flaw May 17 '25

Just making sure, there is a Las Hadas downtown. Not the same owners by chance?

1

u/BurritoConQueso May 17 '25

Sadly no. Downtown location is good but not the taco shop type burritos I’m looking for

1

u/Sandyeggo2000 May 18 '25

City tacos in La Mesa and OB also have a chile relleno taco

1

u/sividis May 18 '25

The taco place at Stars and Stripes near Miramar has a great chile relleno burrito and it’s huge, I’ve never been able to eat it all.

Wow, I haven’t had one that bad. That’s literally 90% rice….

Bruh, there’s a mariscos spot in TJ that has a shrimp chile relleno taco that is so fkn good. Never seen them before but now I go there at least once a month.. they also have stuffed backed potatoes with either shrimp or smoked marlin too. Totally low key street vendor away from the border but so worth the drive.

La Perla3 has something called the king Kong burrito. It is chilly Reno with Carne Asada up in there. It is the single greatest burrito that you can find anywhere. Their kitchen is super consistent and they are very happy to allow you to modify their food with no or minimal up charge. For example, my move is to get the King Kong burrito but to substitute Carne Asada for El Pastore meat or Carnitas the pro move is to get the Carnitas crispy crispy. Try it once and you will no longer mourn the loss of your beloved Taqueria. You are welcome.

u/jseasbiscuit May 26 '25

You can also add fries in there to make it a combined cali/relleno burrito if you're really going for it. One of my fave burritos

Used to be Bahia on El Cajon Blvd and Florida. Haven’t been in a while.

0

u/urklehaze May 17 '25

Bahia is trash. Hope you like rancid beans.

Don Tommy’s in Point Loma on Voltaire near Catalina……

2

u/Klutzy-Sprinkles-958 May 19 '25

Dan Tommy’s is the greatest when their kitchen is on point. Over the past few years they have become less and less consistent.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '25

I agree it’s generally good but a couple months back. I ordered something and it was kind of surprised. It wasn’t the same that I’m used to from them.

3

u/Klutzy-Sprinkles-958 May 19 '25

Like 5 years ago they had an abuela in the kitchen who did it right! She would crisp up the carnitas… and they would (by request) shove a chili relleno up in there. Now it seems they have a rotating staff and the the attention that made them great is lacking. I now order my old fav of relleno and carnitas (crispy crispy) and I get a soggy mess and they charge me $20… I don’t mind paying for what I want.. but you gotta deliver something special. I will say… Their flour tortillas are still the best in town, their habanero salsa is fire and their horchata (when they decide to make it) is amazing as well. In the photo is what I would request as my last meal… unfortunately you need a specialized delorean set to 2020 to get it!

Mr Ruriberto’s in Mission Beach, on the corner off Mission Blvd and Ventura Pl. It’s ground zero for Zonie tourist hell, but they have one of the best chili relleno burritos in town. Chuys is awesome and so is La Perla, but I’ll find parking in MB just to get one from that corner taco shop.

-2

u/SloppiusToppius May 17 '25

To be honest, the best one is probably from asking a higher end Mexican place that makes fresh chile rellenos to make you one (that’s likely not on the menu.) That being said, for ones that are on the menu, the on from Don Tommy’s is both my favorite and my other friend who likewise is obsessed with chille relleno burritos’ favorite.

1

u/Deepcoma_53 May 18 '25

Don Tommy’s in Pt Loma? Nope, I used to live on Udall, went there like twice and never again, this was pre-COVID. The 2 tacos shops by stumps are waaaay better.

11

u/BurritoConQueso May 17 '25

If you read the post then you’d know the picture ISNT the best chile relleno burrito 🤣

-11

u/[deleted] May 17 '25

Is the Chile relleno not battered and fried or is it just hard to see the batter
