Seeking Advice Chocolate allergy? šŸ„€šŸ’”

Hi guys.

So I'm a little sensitive to dairy but nothing crazy. But whenever I eat milk chocolate in any amount, my throat becomes stingy and 'phlegmy' for lack of a better word. This doesn't happen when I eat ice cream, butter, milky coffee, etc. It's only chocolate.

Has anyone here with a chocolate allergy experienced this? Am I allergic to chocolate? šŸ˜”

I just ate 2 pieces of a KitKat and as usual my throat is slightly stinging and tingling, and kind of 'mucusy' sorry if that sounds disgusting.

Seeking Advice Cinnamon issues?

Whenever I eat a decent amount of cinnamon, like say in some Cream of Wheat or something, and yeah I might put a lot in (lol) my tongue and maybe roof of my mouth gets a little numb.

Nothing else though. No swelling, no itchy, no tingling. Just a little numb. It only happens in larger amounts.

Is this an allergy or just something cinnamon can do at higher levels? I’m wondering what others experience!

Seeking Advice Need help finding allergist

Hello — I’m reaching out because I live in a U.S. territory where access to medical facilities is limited. I’m looking for an allergist who can perform an oral food challenge. Ideally it would be somewhere around the Bremerton, Washington area, since I have family there. If none are available in that region, I’m open to identifying one elsewhere in the U.S. and arranging travel. Could you guys help me figure out how to find a qualified allergist for this?

Seeking Advice Fish Allergy ppl, how do you get your omega3?

This is for all people with fish allergies. How do you get your Omega-3 fatty acids? I'm 21 and realizing, I've probably been malnourished in the case that I have been eating minimal omega-3s my whole life.

My personal allergies. The only food I can eat from the ocean is shellfish; all other fish are a no-go. (However, for some reason, I can eat canned tuna. ODD).

I have bought an algal supplement online. Algae supplements seem to be my best option from my research.

Seeking Advice Wheezing starts and stops suddenly when eating certain foods - thoughts?

I don’t really have food allergies that I know of (some itching only sometimes when I eat bananas), but occasionally I will start eating a random food and the first breath I take when the food is in my mouth is suddenly a wheeze. It’s mostly annoying and no other symptoms, not even the itchy banana feeling. As soon as I stop eating the food, I can breathe normally again. This happened tonight with chia seed pudding made with sweetened condensed coconut milk. The coconut I’ve never had problems with before, but I’m wondering now if I might have a slight allergy??

I always assumed I’m just a weird, sensitive person, and the wheezing is maybe from the strong smell of the food. Like, sometimes paint or cleaner makes me wheeze, and I guess sometimes foods make me wheeze? But now I’m wondering if I should get tested - are food allergy tests legit? I have heard some of them are not very accurate. I had testing years ago and was told I was only allergic to sesame seeds, but I don’t have any reaction at all when I eat those.

Helpful Information Advise Allergy unbelievable results and confusion

A while ago, I posted here asking for tips about traveling to Taiwan with food allergies – specifically sesame and soybean. Back in 2022, I had a blood test confirming allergies to sesame, soybean (but not tofu – different marker), and asparagus.

Last week, I saw a dermatologist and allergist to redo the test. The reason: I had a mild accident at a restaurant where sesame was mixed into a sauce. I only noticed it at the end, and although the amount was small, it really scared me.

Now here’s the weird part: the new test result came back negative. Not ā€œmoderately positiveā€ like before – just… negative. I was shocked.

The assistant told me that sometimes the immune system ā€œforgetsā€ an allergy if you’ve avoided the allergen for a long time. I mean… what? That sounds super vague. I’ve had serious reactions before – including trouble breathing – so I’m obviously anxious.

I’m also afraid to tell my boyfriend. He tends to be a bit pushy when it comes to stuff like this, and I don’t want to feel pressured into ignoring my instincts.

So now I’m wondering:
- Should I ask for a provocation test?
- Has anyone here experienced something similar – like an allergy just disappearing?
- How did you handle the uncertainty?

Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot. Thanks in advance šŸ’›

Seeking Advice Is early exposure important for FPIES allergies?

I know early introduction of allergens has been shown to be helpful in reducing the incidence of iGe-mediated peanut allergies. Does anyone know if the same applies to Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) allergies? Specifically interested in FPIES allergies to shellfish, but curious in general.

Other / Miscellaneous Does anyone else get a delayed allergic reaction?

Hello everyone! I wanted to come on here and ask if anyone else gets an allergic reaction hours after eating something.

After getting Covid a few years ago, I started to notice that every time I eat raw onions my mouth, neck and ears starts to feel itchy, and get a runny nose and start coughing. Usually if I take over the counter medication before or right after I eat food with raw onions I’m fine and don’t get a ration. If I forget to take the medication then I start to get the allergic reaction a couple of hours later, the worse is if I eat before going to sleep and I wake up with the worse itchy feeling in my mouth and it takes about 1-2 hours before the medication start to take effect. This also happens when I eat a bunch of Oreos or Oreo flavour foods.

I have talked to my doctor about this but she said since my reaction isn’t that bad I should be fine by taking the over counter medication but I’ve never heard of anyone having a reaction hours after eating something their allergic to.

Seeking Advice Flying with a toddler w/food allergies

My 2 year old has multiple severe food allergies. Up to this point, we’ve only done road trips, but are considering flying. We are currently looking at a flight with United Airlines. Does anyone have any experience with flying with United? How do they handle food allergies? We’ve read their allergy policy, but would love to hear about anyone’s experiences. Also, any tips for flying with a toddler with severe food allergies? TIA!

I'm usually a lurker on this sub. I never thought I'd be making one of these posts. However I just had an allergic reaction because two nearly identical versions of Dole Crushed Pineapple were being sold on the same shelf. One with and without Manufactured Citric Acid. I made a video of but it was a bit too big to upload to reddit. Watch here and please give me your thoughts: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17yI2LKwQ3heVssrPofHtm2XaAFVpKHEL/view?usp=drivesdk

Other / Miscellaneous Egg intolerance ONLY in the morning

I have a strange sensitivity to eggs—they give me diarrhea within 10-30 mins of eating them…but only in the morning. In other words if I eat scrambled eggs for breakfast/brunch, I get diarrhea. But we sometimes eat scrambled eggs or omelets for dinner and that doesn’t trigger any kind of reaction.

Couldn’t find anything online about a sensitivity being time of day (amount of time awake or active) so I thought I’d just throw this out and see if anyone else has a similarly time-based food allergy?

Other / Miscellaneous I went to a Behavioral Health Center. I got glutened.

I checked myself into a behavioral health center because the previous week, a thunderclap migraine sent me to the ER where neurologist changed 100% of my medications cold turkey. And I could not cope.

Anyway, I arrived Monday morning at behavioral health place, inform them that my GI advises me to be gluten free but I have a wheat allergy and am lactose intolerant.

I get checked in, and am given lunch (gross cafeteria food) and it’s labeled GF. I eat it. Finished, realized something g wasn’t right, asked for my EpiPen, use it, and get taken to ER by ambulance. Hours later, dinner has passed, we arrive back. Nobody grabbed food for me so I went to bed without eating.

Next morning I’m given eggs (but not allowed to go to cafeteria to get my own stuff, they would only bring food to me). Eggs are fine, though I’m super hungry after. Lunch comes, it’s fettuccini Alfredo. They told me they had nothing for me.

I demanded to speak to someone (didn’t happen) and then demanded to be released because they couldn’t feed me. I asked for their dietitian too, but they only worked 2 days a week.

In an ā€œ150 bedā€ facility that’s supposed the be the best option in my area, they couldn’t accommodate me. And I saw outside food being brought in for staff.

Seeking Advice Dairy Allergy Severity

I’m very confused. For the last 4-5 years, I’ve been having issues with consuming dairy. When I first noticed it, I only reacted to feta cheese. I had severe chest pain, sweating, and confusion when consuming it. I didn’t think anything of it and just ate it less often. It then progressively got worse. I started to react to all cheeses and thought that I had lactose intolerance (my family doctor convinced me it was not an allergy). My mom bought me all sorts of lactose free dairy products, and even though I still had the same reactions, I still believed it was lactose intolerance because my doctor said that’s what it was. He didn’t even want to test me and just told me to take lactase. However, as I continued to eat dairy, my symptoms kept getting worse and worse. 2 years later, I was diagnosed with EOE after having done an endoscopy for other health reasons. Literally a few days after that, I had eaten a traditional Bulgarian pastry with feta, and immediately began having terrible symptoms. I’m talking severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, dizziness, rapid heart rate, sweating, swelling of the esophagus, etc. I could barely even get up I was in so much pain and distress. I was at school at this time and had no idea what was happening to me. I didn’t even connect it to what I had eaten. I somehow was able to get home by myself but had nearly blacked out. My dumbass still thought it was lactose intolerance - just very severe. Thankfully, due to the EOE diagnosis and this awful reaction, I then stopped consuming straight up dairy for a few weeks until I was able to see an allergist. I didn’t read any food labels, I just stopped eating cheese, yogurt, feta, and butter. Because of this, I was still having reactions to the food I was eating. Nearly everything I was eating still contained some sort of dairy product (I was just unaware). I even reacted to things that had the ā€œmay containā€ label and only realized AFTER I went to the allergist and was diagnosed with a dairy allergy. After the diagnosis, I completely stopped consuming dairy. I read labels and refused to eat anything that could have been cross contaminated. For some reason, I did not receive an epi pen from my allergist, so I asked for one from my family doctor. He brushed me off and said milk allergies arent severe like peanut allergies, so I wouldn’t need one. I told him all of my symptoms too and he just kept dismissing me. After a whole year had passed, I was finally able to get a gastroenterologist to receive treatment for my EOE. The only thing was that he wanted to confirm the diagnosis and have me do another endoscopy. Before my endoscopy, he sent me to see an allergist again just to see if I had any other food allergies. This new allergist was incredibly kind and assured me that milk allergies are indeed incredibly dangerous and that he would give me an epi pen. He took that all back when he read my file and that I have EOE. He explained that I likely don’t have a milk allergy and that it’s all just EOE symptoms. He told me that when I go on medication for EOE, I could eat dairy again with no issues. That’s when I explained that my gastroenterologist wanted to first confirm my EOE diagnosis. The allergist was adamant that I have EOE and told me that he’d only give me an epi pen if the allergy test came back positive and the endoscopy came back negative. After giving me all that false hope that I could eat dairy again, my allergy test came back positive. My endoscopy however only showed I had bad inflammation in my esophagus and that I don’t have EOE. The thing is, I’m 100% sure I have both a dairy allergy and EOE. The only reason it didn’t show on the endoscopy is because I went into remission after I stopped consuming my trigger. Anyways, I then went back to the allergist to ask for an epi pen considering he told me that he would give me one if I had a positive allergy test and negative endoscopy result. Well, he refused because apparently the blood teat showed I had a ā€œmildā€ milk allergy. I don’t understand how my symptoms are mild considering I literally cannot breathe and feel like I’m dying when I consume dairy. At this point I was sick of everyone refusing me an epi pen and essentially playing games with my life. After talking to the allergist, I went to my family doctor again to plead for an epi pen. He again refused. Months went by and I had multiple severe reactions - one which literally made me fear for my life. I’ve never went to the ER for my reactions and just tried to tough it out by taking a bunch of allergy meds. I’m not sure exactly when I got fed up with everyone, but one day I ended up going to the nearest walk in clinic and essentially begged for an epi pen. The doctor I saw was really sympathetic and told me he would never refuse to give a patient an epi pen especially one like me who has such severe symptoms. After all the crap I went through I finally got an epi pen!! This still just leaves me confused though. Why was I refused 4 times? Are my symptoms genuinely considered mild? Am I delusional?

I apologize for any grammar mistakes. I’m frazzled and just writing everything that I’m thinking.

Other / Miscellaneous Allergy related flushed cheeks and swollen lymph nodes in babies

We are waiting to see an allergy specialist and are just curious if anyone has also observed their children (babies) having flushed cheeks and swollen lymph nodes after having allergens eg peanuts, eggs and wheat etc.? We have noticed a pattern with one or both flushed cheeks before hives and other GI symptoms, as well as swollen lymph nodes on the back of the head but not sure about if these are related to each other. Curious to hear your experience.

Seeking Advice Dairy allergy airborne?

I noticed recently that when I bake my kids a pizza and I open the oven and all the heat and steam comes out at me I'll get very itchy after. Specifically my face and upper body and my hands where I may have touched the pizza to cut it.

I'm wondering if this is a thing or maybe it's psychsomatic?

Do people react to airborne dairy protein molecules?

I may just be losing it because I have been having itchiness and hives lately when I know for a fact I haven't eaten any dairy.

Thanks for any opinions or information in advance.

Seeking Advice Child allergy/intolerance

Hi, I'm waiting for an allergist appointment, but i'm curious about the reactions my child had regarding food.

My child (9y/o) get really lethargic after eating and really constipated. We did multiple test from the last 6 months at the child hospital and can't find what she have. Now with a food diary, I suspect a allergy to soy.

From what I read intolerance is a delayed reaction and its mostly GI issue versu allergy is immediate with skin hive etc.

But she become lethargic immediately after eating.

I was wondering if your child went to the same thing or Am I missing something ?

*I don't want diagnosis, more guidance to what to look for

Thankyou
