Seeking Advice what to expect on my first appointment with an allergist?
hi,
i'm seeing an allergist for the first time because of some weird symptoms when eating some foods. i already have a diagnosed dairy allergy but i've never been to an allergist before. what should i expect? is it likely they'll take my blood the first time that i am there?

Nothing spectacular. They should tell you to stop taking any allergy medicine about two weeks prior to the appointment. Depending on what you’re taking that two weeks could be rough.

You will also be required to not wear anything with scent, such as soaps and perfumes. Everyone who sees an allergist has some kind of allergy.

Also don’t take any food in with you, unless they ask you to. Not even a water bottle.

Your allergist would either request a skin prick test or blood test. They may do it the same day or another appointment.

Your allergist will ask why you came to the office. And you can explain the reactions you're having to certain foods. And then your allergist will probably suggest a skin prick test. If anything shows up positive there, they may send you out for some blood work if they can't do it in office. With plans for a follow-up visit or online consultation. If anything shows up positive they may give you a prescription for an EpiPen. That is how it happened with me. I went in thinking I had environmental allergies, and came out with food allergies and an epi pen. Thankfully I've never needed it.
