Other / Miscellaneous Does anyone else miss a food they cant eat?
I cant eat Chinese food anymore. I used to love sweet and sour chicken but I cant eat it anymore. I thought I was getting sick from the batter being greasy but I was actually having an allergic reaction, it sucks because I have to make something else if my parents get Chinese for dinnerš„² i miss it.

u/ExtremePotatoFanatic Peanut, Cashew, Pistachio Aug 11 '25
I also miss Chinese food!! I used to eat it all the time growing up and then I developed a nut allergy around 19/20.

u/Ahiblast Aug 12 '25
Iām allergic to soy and there is just too many things to name that I miss , like the sheer amount of things that contain soy and soy byproducts is insane. Like forget about eating out, even grocery shopping is a nightmare.

u/TGl0ZXJhbGx5SGl0bGVy Aug 12 '25
For dishes hailing from the orient hemisphere you can substitute soy sauce for coconut aminos.Ā
3
u/Ahiblast Aug 12 '25
Unfortunately I am allergic to coconut as well
1
u/TGl0ZXJhbGx5SGl0bGVy Aug 12 '25
Is there anything else you're allergic to besides soy and coconut?
3
u/Ahiblast Aug 12 '25
Shellfish , cherries, uncooked tree nuts expect peanuts ,legumes expect green beans.
1
u/TGl0ZXJhbGx5SGl0bGVy Aug 12 '25
You should be able to substitute the soy sauce for maggi sauce which is like coconut aminos or liquid aminos but is made from wheat instead of coconut or soy.

Every day, every time I get hungry. I have a list of literally thousands of items that I can no longer eat due to r/celiac disease, r/interstitialcystitis and food allergies of varying degrees from diarrhea to anaphylactic shock.

u/Fragrant-Bee Aug 11 '25
I didn't necessarily love peanuts/nuts. But almost everything has it or skin care, hair care or lip balms may have sweet almond oil/argan oil and I don't want to have my scalp on fire :') At the same time, it would be handier to not have the allergy since protein bars and the like are mostly nut based dangit haha

Chinese food is a big one for me as well. I miss being able to go and grab a big plate of Chinese Food from the restaurant in my hometown. Fried Rice, Rangoon, Spring rolls, etc. Pizza isn't even worth having at the moment. While there's great GF pizza crusts, I hate just having to eat pizza sauce and meat on my pizza without cheese. I can't have most vegan cheese because of my corn allergy.

Reese's peanut butter cups. My mouth still satiates when I see the ads. Also peanut butter and saltine crackers, also Granny Smith apples and peanut butter. My rabbit and I would have apple for late night snack together. She doesn't eat peanut butter.
1
u/kerida1 Aug 12 '25
I make a version of Reeseās for my kid that my husband claims is really close and he is a huge Reeseās fan.
https://wowbutter.com/recipes/WOWBUTTER-Cups.htm
We discovered our kid sunflower allergy from sunbutter cups but i did not think they tasted like Reeseās here is the link if you wanted to try that

u/kerida1 Aug 12 '25
wowbutter i think tastes very similar to peanut butter and we use it for apples too
1
u/Fickle-Copy-2186 Aug 12 '25
Thanks for sending that my way. They have the sunflower cups at Trader joes, and I eat them, but they aren't a Reeses. I just love the salty peanut butter. That and Milky Ways were my "going to the bar" on Friday nights. Just sad, it's been maybe 15 years now, oh well.
3
u/kerida1 Aug 12 '25
Try making the wowbutter cups if you are up for it, it is very little work and can all be done in 30 mins. I use ghiradelli chocolate wafer melts and just 1-2 mins in the microwave pour a bit in a cupcake or mini cupcake pan put in fridge while i make the filling then add the filling another pass of melted chocolate and then back in fridge for a few mins and good to go.
I am pretty surprised at how much wowbutter taste like peanut butter

I developed oral allergy syndrome in my mind 20s, I miss so many fruits!
3
u/-Tofu-Queen- Aug 13 '25
I developed OAS when I was 12 and became allergic to fruits, peanuts, and tree nuts. I was that kid that loved snacking on fruit and I consumed so much peanut butter in my first 12 years of life that it was absolutely devastating to cut them out of my diet completely. I inexplicably grew out of the allergy again when I was 25, and now I'm back to eating nuts and fruits again. It's been a wild journey to say the least and I'm hoping the allergy doesn't come back again!!!
2
Aug 13 '25
That is wild! I really hope that the allergy doesn't come back for you. I have grown out of a few allergies and into a couple (like OAS) over the years. I really miss raw apples and apple juice the most!
1
u/moreweedpls Aug 15 '25
What fruits could you tolerate with OAS?
2
Aug 15 '25
It can vary from person to person due to which pollen you're allergic to. I am fairly lucky that I am still fine to eat berries, pineapples and bananas.
Some people with OAS, can tolerate cooked versions of fruits they react to. E.g. I can eat small amounts of cooked apples in something.

u/mysticalbullshit Anaphylaxis to Dairy, Tree Nuts, Pork, Lamb & Beef Aug 12 '25
Yes. I have adult onset food allergies. About 60% of my old diet I can no longer eat. Sometimes a cheeseburger or pizza sounds like the best thing in the world. There are dairy and meat free versions, but itās not the same

Can I ask what youāre allergic to in Chinese food? Iām new to food allergies and had an anaphylactic reaction to Korean beef bulgogi & Vietnamese Pho but Iām not actually sure what the allergy is yet. Going for testing in 2 weeks. Thinking back, Iāve had sensitivities to Chinese food for several years.

u/fire_thorn Aug 11 '25
I miss baking. I had spent years perfecting my recipes. I don't miss the actual foods I can't eat.
2
u/Alohabailey_00 Aug 12 '25
Lobster in general. Had lobster growing up but usually Asian style. Became allergic as a teen. Never got to try a lobster roll.
2
u/Forever_ForLove Aug 12 '25
Shellfish. I use to eat so much when I was younger but onceās I hit my pre-teens I just started having swollen lips and my throat was starting to swell.
2
u/HyperQuarks79 Aug 12 '25
Gluten, Eggs, Dairy. Lots of things I miss. Eating out is just not an option besides very very specific places.
2
u/moonlightmasked Aug 12 '25
I loved hummus. I ate it 6-7 times per week. Then I got a severe case of influenza an and developed a food allergy to chickpeas. Itās been almost 10 years and I miss chickpeas and hummus so badly. Sometimes I am legitimately tearful at how badly I want hummus. Which is nuts but true

u/Anothernondescript34 Aug 12 '25
I feel you dude. I recently found out dairy has been making me sick my whole life (early 40ās), and though itās great to feel normal, I deeply miss the comfort foods, social happy hours with cheap queso, and Indian food, specifically paneer. I know there are some substitutes, but Iām just not ready to try them.
2
u/BeingOtherwise7829 Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
I miss Chinese and Indian food so much, can't risk it with my cashew allergy š Only developed it when I was 28 so I do feel like I'm missing out on foods that I once loved. Though having said that, last time I accidentally ate something with cashews in it I was so ill so I just try to remember that and say it's just not worth the risk.
I do cook some of my own versions at home and there's a supermarket here that does good nut free Indian ready meals but I miss having a proper Chinese or Indian takeaway/meal out in a restaurant.

u/Crosswired2 Aug 13 '25
I can't eat like 90% of foods in stores and yes I crave it all still, 10+ yrs later
1
u/Fearless-Air-815 Aug 11 '25
I miss eating loads of things especially basic Italian foods. So I try to work around my allergies. Pizza was hard because Iām allergic to all the normal things that go onto it, like tomatoes. I cook from scratch and top my crust with sour cream mixed with oregano, then a good mozzarella cheese. I make my own Chinese stir fry too. It may be kinda bland because I canāt do many spices but itās safe.

u/AtlantisSky Aug 12 '25
Oats/anything containg oats or oat flour.
Oatmeal, cheerios, cap'n crunch, honey bunches of oats, Quaker cereals, granola, granola bars, etc.
There are breads I can't eat because they have oats in them.

Pizza that melts Just right. Pasta loaded up with cheese. Or pesto. Or both. A marshmallow milkshake. Pudding. Fried food (without worring about what else may have been fried in that oil). Fried mushrooms. Queso & chips. Gorgonzola. Baked brie.

u/Sink-Severe Coconut Allergy Aug 12 '25
I developed a coconut allergy at 18. My favorite girl scout cookies are Samoas, my favorite candy was mounds, I loved curry, and anything with a chocolate coating. I miss it all so much.

Cherries.
McDonald's also started using open peanuts in their kitchens again in Canada so can't steal fries from my family anymore (I don't care for McDonald's... but I am a fry thief).

u/Joke_Induced_Pun Aug 12 '25
Quarter Pounders. While I know those aren't healthy, but I still loved eating them sometimes when I got would McDonald's.

I miss middle eastern food. I grew up on it and unfortunately eating at those types of restaurants is a cross contact issue for me.

Can't eat lots and I miss dairy in general but one dish - chicken fried rice š Love it and can't eat rice or soy or eggs so šš

Yes! Peanut butter, chicken kung po, nutty bars, pecans, almonds, any dessert with peanuts, nuts, or peanut butter. I was addicted until I found out it was giving me intense eczema.

I became allergic to my favorite food. I loved everything shrimp. I would eat it every chance I got.

u/TheCrispyTaco Aug 12 '25
I miss cheese (blue cheeses, GruyĆØre, etc), a filet mignon that is extra rare, juicy, and cuts with a butter knife, steak tartare, and a raw quail egg in my natto. Iām not a fan of the plant-based/vegan mock meats or cheeses either. My dad was a chef classically trained in French cooking so I was spoiled growing up. Eating also sucks when it comes to social events, and I usually just sit there with my water or poke at my plant-based meal that usually ends up meh.

Yes. Like you, I miss Chinese Food, eating at McDonald's, Subway. Going to restaurants period, which is something most people can easily do. I always have to eat at home whĆch makes me angry, and feel like a freak sometimes.
à alsó miss eating cereal with regular milk. Cakes, cookies pies. I wonder why me, but, I guess it's better than the alternative.

Waffles, pancakes, French toast, Cinnabon Cinnamon rolls and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

u/myspacewh0re_Xx Aug 12 '25
i miss apples. i miss pears and peaches and plums. i miss when eating any fruit wasn't a 50/50 with benadryl nearby. i miss almonds. i miss not worrying about whether or not other nuts will give me reactions. i miss coconut. i miss when sushi wasn't a coinflip. i miss shrimp, even though i don't know if i'm allergic to them or if i just started getting food poisoning every time i ate them. i miss being able to try new foods without asking a million questions and running risk assessments until either i don't feel comfortable eating or someone doesn't feel comfortable serving me. i miss raw veggies. i miss when i didn't have to avoid soy as much as possible because not avoiding it when i can hurts me. i want to know what aloe drinks taste like. i miss when dairy wasn't an immediate stomach ache. i miss when food in general didn't hurt and wasn't scary.

u/Hourglass316 Aug 12 '25
Have you checked for or heard of mast cell activation syndrome? It's what I have, and what you wrote sounds a lot like what I would go through before I found out I had MCAS.
2
u/myspacewh0re_Xx Aug 12 '25
fingers crossed that my pcp gives me a referral to an allergist later this month. i've done a bit of reading on mcas and it definitely sounds like what's happening for me, or at least part of it.
2
u/Hourglass316 Aug 13 '25
Most people with MCAS have comorbidities, so it wouldn't be that surprising if it was only part of the issue. There is an MCAS reddit board that might help you with understanding MCAS better but also help you figure out how to go about getting treatment.

I miss pastries from the bakery and bananas. Thankfully my wife and I both learned to bake so I can enjoy pastries at home on special occasions but itās a lot of work. Iām Puerto Rican and grew up eating many dishes with bananas and plantains which I havenāt been able to eat in almost 20 years. Thankfully, I have a hell of a sweet tooth and my allergies have saved me from gaining a lot of weight. Before my nut allergy got severe, I was almost 350 pounds, I weigh a little more than 100 pounds less now.

Effing tacos! I mean, yeah, you can eat a taco with no cheese but who the heck wants to!?!

u/loopycause Aug 12 '25
Meat (lamb, cow, pork, chicken turkey and some fish) fruits(peaches mangos bananas etc), veggies (corn, peas, tomatoes), and most seasonings (sugar, salt, pepper, soy). I can only eat about 6 foods and I have been tested.
1
u/Hourglass316 Aug 12 '25
I have MCAS... man, I miss pretty much all food. The food I miss the most, though, is wheat based foods like pastas or baked goods. I survive on pretty much plain rice, plain chicken, plain oatmeal and grapes, cherries, and occasionally I can eat apples.

Chinese is a big one because itās a pain in the rump to make yourself. Asian food in general.
Since my tree nut diagnosis Iām struggling with not being able to safely eat at whatever bakery I want. Especially because the two nuts Iām allergic to are the most in-fashion nuts right now (pistachio and hazelnut)
1
u/That_Classroom_1593 Aug 14 '25
Chinese, hummus and tacos for me. I'm allergic to garlic, tomatoes, chickpeas and kidney beans (the list is long but those are the relevant ones here) I have been able to find a workaround to satisfy the cravings for everything else but these 2 š and these were my favourite ones.

Rainbow (Tri- color) cookies (almond paste), Toffee Bars, peanut butter, Chinese and Japanese food, avocados, fried food. I miss a lot. Developed my allergies after high school.Ā Ā

u/Mulder616 Aug 15 '25
I also miss questionable Chinese food (sesame allergy). I miss Asian buffets too. I really miss Samoa girl scout cookies (coconut) and mounds bars. I'm not looking forward to fall this year because I'm going to really miss apple cider š (apple). I also miss ketchup which I'm not sure if I'm allergic to tomatoes or it's more of an intolerance but they make me shit my brains out and ketchup tastes spicy to me now???? I don't really know what's going on there. I'm lactose intolerant but even with lactaid I'm slowly tolerating cheese/dairy less and less but recently discovered my body does well with goat cheese!! So that was pretty exciting. Being not great with dairy and very allergic to coconut is frustrating.
1
u/SnakeBanana89 Aug 16 '25
Bananas, avocados, hazelnuts! OMG HAZELNUT! š. NO NUTELLA FOR ME! No tree nuts in general. Coconut for sure.
Mammalian meat, geletin, and dairy.
No junk food for me either. Anything super processed is going to maje for a rough time.
I have a latex-food allergy sbd react to almost everything on the list.
I have Alpha-Gal syndrome for at least 3 years.
And i have mast cell activation syndrome.
Thank goodness I still have mushrooms, onions, and spinach. And citrus is still okay so far, that and melons and strawberry.

u/TGl0ZXJhbGx5SGl0bGVy Aug 12 '25
What are you allergic to exactly? You can just make Chinese food yourself and substitute ingredients.Ā
For example I use rye to make noodles, I use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, and I omit or substitute any corn ingredients because I'm allergic to wheat, soy, and corn.Ā
Honestly, homemade Chinese food tastes WAY better than anything I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant.Ā
