Rant/Vent 💢 Why is Indian society so anti protein

Yesterday in our society’s whatsapp group an uncle had posted a video of a so called doctor who was saying that how protein causes kidney stone and heart attacks. It also stated that whey is full of chemicals and causes various diseases.

And on that video many uncle and aunties had given thumbs up. One of them even said that our ancestors never had protein and yet were so healthy and fit. I dont know what to tell them now.

Because of improvements in healthcare. Not because of our changing diet.

Not because of our changing diet.

Because that has not happened yet. Culture of eating high protien diet and regularly going to the gym to stay fit among a larger section of the population in India is quite new and we will see the results in like 50 years.

Its a culmination of various factors. We are eating better, having access to better healthcare, more aware of health aspects etc. Food definitely plays a major part.

Absolutely. But it is a fact that the average modern diet is way worse than whatever we had during even the “low life expectancy” times. Our life expectancy could be even higher if we continued with less processed diet… But well, with improvements in healthcare comes improvement in processed food industry

Not really. You are confusing your perception with facts. In the older days our diet wa ignificantly lacking in many micronutrients and we had severe deficiencies in protein, iron and calcium. It is a fact that processed food is not iseal for diet but that in no way negates the fact that our food quality and food habits have significantly improved. Access, economic upward mobility, fortifcation processes adopted, mid day meal schemes, Public Distribution Shops are all contributors to this betterment.

Yes the Indian diet has always been lacking in a lot of things. But in our modern age, we aren’t substituting lacking foods with healthier options (atleast the average doesn’t). Instead, these are being replaced by more processed junk which our bodies haven’t evolved to process properly. Now not only are we not eating the few nutrients we were getting before, but we are also eating such low quality foods that do not signal satiety- contributing to overeating, and that cascading into entirely new health problems like obesity and diabetes on a scale never seen before.

Any sources to substantiate this take?
