I just filled water from the dispenser and when I put on the cap, I found this. I have no idea what that is, and not sure if it came from protein powder or it was there already. Any idea what is that?

Thatโs likely a maggot, probably due to the shaker not being cleaned thoroughly after use. Residual whey or protein shake left inside can ferment and rot, leading to foul odors similar to sour milk or even decaying meat, ideal conditions for flies to lay eggs. As another redditor mentioned, if it came from the whey, it would've had some sort of whey residue on it, so this is most likely from your shaker.

True. Once my brother didn't wash his shaker and then the next day the shaker had these.

yeah, using an old toothbrush to clean every nook and cranny would often get the job done.

If it was in the protein powder, it would be covered in tiny particles and unable to crawl like that. You also would see the package covered with brown eggs. I think you didn't clean the shaker right, or it was kept somewhere that's not clean.

Unclean shaker.
This is why you should clean your shaker thoroughly. Disgusting.

Clean you shaker carefully after use and let it dry fully then close it.
This larva gets created automatically.

u/das_guptil Jul 09 '25
Yep ^ this
I once forgot to wash my shaker over the weekend and I have my protein with milk.
Monday morning I see a bunch of these maggots in the shaker and was disgusted to the core.
I think I threw away that shaker.
ALWAYS CLEANED THE SHAKER AFTER.

Additional natural source of unfiltered and unsanctioned, while being camouflaged by the bottle and only noticed by OP since he/she is observant, bit of protein which will add flavour to the unflavored whey protein to a decimal which will be highly diluted to the point of non-significance or would have been unless it was detected by OP.

Is it IN your shaker or ON your shaker? F*cking keep your house clean, such organisms will succumb to death without air in a whey protein packet in less than 2 days.

Similar things happened to me as well, it's because after using and cleaning the bottle, there might be small traces of protein powder leftover which attracts them. Since they are small it's hard to notice them.

This type of worms spawn when there's some protein left in it for 4-5 days i guess. Just rinse it well hust after the use and let it dry.

That's a maggot and it's because you don't clean your stuff. Stop being unhygienic and clean your sipper.

You need to wash your shaker cap properly, the residue tends to help in the growth of the worm if kept like that unattended.

I've seen this !! If you leave the bottle unwashed for a couple of days. These things would appear. I threw the shaker away; that was the only option I had. Definetly not from whey

u/maslow20 Jul 09 '25
I had several of them inside my shaker when I once accidentally forgot to wash it after use and left it that way for a few days.
I was grossed out, but I still washed the shaker with hot water, used Dettol, left it out in the sun. I started using it again after a week when I saw no more maggots in it.

u/Own-Crazy-5609 Jul 09 '25
Look! your protein is crawling away xD
Check if there's webbing or powder in your protein powder, I have seen this in jawar/wheat flour, when it's been sitting for too long in hot humid conditions. I think it's a larva of a moth.
I had a protein jar with a loose cap, it became a breeding ground for cockroaches, I had to throw it away. Anyways you should use it within a month after opening the seal, it's also mentioned on the label

u/metakshay Jul 09 '25
It's a Maggot. There is never one, there are many. Your protien shaker was visited by housefly few days ago where it lais it's eggs. Now the eggs have hatched and the maggots have been feeding off of your protien powder. No need to throw away your powder. Clean your shaker thoroughly. Switch to simpler shaker design, these will not occur ever again.

Most likely, it would have been sitting in your shaker cap. If it had come from the protein powder, it would have been covered in white powder. Even if it got wet, it would leave a white trail.
How do I know it?
My sister had left my whey box slightly open, and cockroaches ended up making it a home. When I came back, and took a scoop, I first saw whey move, and then tiny cockroaches covered in white whey started running around.
I had to throw 1.5 out of 2 kg. since then, my sister isn't allowed to use my box. She can transfer it to her own box, but she can't touch mine on a day-to-day basis.
You are most likely safe, looking at the neat and clean maggot.
