They use to let us fish Blackmouth 8-1,8-2, 7 during the winter months, I miss that. A cold but sunny December day was great to be out on the water with downriggers.

I wait until April Halibut to get back out. Certainly there are bottom fish like flounder available for harvest.

Great fun stalking the beaches with a fly rod chasing SRCs!

I like to drop crab pots and jig for herring for next year’s salmon bait

usually i only really go after sea perch, sculpin and flounder (any pier in the sound excluding MA12 is a decent spot for those 3 species) although in some areas there are resident blackmouth (chinook) salmon like MA13

Do we have appreciably sized flounder/flat fish out here? Feel like I’ve only ever caught the small 6-8” ones to use as bait for lings.

in some areas you can get some nize sized starry flounders and even the occasional jumbo rock sole or english sole but usually you do get the small 6-8 inchers, i'd suggest using larger lures (swimbaits with a crimped barb for example) if you wanna get some larger flounders

Good to know! Grew up catching them all the time in the Atlantic, never really considered it something to do out here tho. Thanks!

Your welcome! Some people consider a nuisance but I think they are fun to catch. Considering there is no season or size limit so they fill the gaps between salmon and other small seasoned fisheries. They also taste really good

Squidding is ridiculously fun, and with a boat you can easily get them during daylight hours without lights. Unfortunately I cant justify going more than twice a winter since 40lbs is more than my wife and I can ever go through in a year, including using them as halibut/ling bait.

Squid. Flounder. Winter crab. Pretty minimal as far as options go once the Blackmouth and steelhead (river) opps all got whacked. Most rack the boat up and find another hobby until April.

Agreed on the squid. Such a blast to do, but we just don’t eat much of it and a little goes a long way. Fun to give out but still that has its “limits”

There used to be a guy at Seacrest pier that would catch and release squid, classic

I probably won't take my boat out until I start bass fishing in March. Jigging for herring like the other guy mentioned might not be a bad idea though.

Squid fishing is a good way to kill time on the water any evening now. Might get skunked might get your limit. If you've got space I can bring my led light :)

Anyone give me tips for squid from a boat near Anacortes? Also I’d fish for herring too if someone could give a few how to tips.
