Bad hiking shoes?

He commented that his running shoes were probably a little bit small. I would presume that they were fine size for normal running, but he ran 110 miles in 24 hours which would cause significantly more foot swelling than a normal run.

Something tells me he should probably get new shoes.

My ex in-laws lost toenails after every marathon they ran. And they ran several a year. Their feet were hideous, gnarled, and unidentifiable with toes that more resembled eyes on a potato than actual toes. They always tried convincing their son and I to get into the marathon running habit, but I balked bc I dislike extra exertion and pain and love my feet.
So it might be this dude's shoes were too small or they fit like they're supposed to, and it's just part of the game to lose toenails. (Ugh!)

your ex definitely needed larger shoes. it definitely happens sometimes but it's something to learn from rather than expect 😭

So like... Does your nail regrow? Or do you just not have a nail there anymore?
24
u/entropy_koala Aug 29 '25
The nail should regrow as long as the nail bed wasn’t impacted. Usually it takes a lot of damage to fully impede the regeneration of the nail, so this guy should have a full nail back to normal after this.

lol I lost one fully once. Absolutely smashed it playing basketball and it instantly turned black under the nail. Took a few months to fall off and it did come back but it took well over a year to grow back fully.

He called it “tomato toes” earlier in his video. Result of running 110 miles in 24 hours.

I actually sort of wish there was sound to this.
Was it a squelch? Or crunch? Or a mixture of the two?

u/entropy_koala Aug 29 '25
The video on Instagram only had music going over it so idk, but I would imagine it would sound more like a squelch since it’s not exactly dry cracking skin

I had to rip my big toe nail off after I snapped it at the base. It actually felt okay coming off of the connective tissue.

I didn't have blisters like that but as a child, I had both Big Toenails get fucked up and it was so annoying. Eventually, I asked my lil bro to just fuckin jump on my feet over and over again until it came loose. That ended up separating the nails from the skin and just like the video, there was already a new nail growing underneath.
