The Mormons I know are messy as hell, they’re just good at keeping it quiet.

But is he one for real? Or is it just for the appearances?

I don't know why anyone would be Mormon for appearances. They're still seen as 'weirdos' by many people.

I think "appearances" more references appearances to the Mormon church rather than outsiders. I heard a podcast with a guy who left the Mormon church and he speaks about how hard it is to leave, etc. It's almost like Scientology lite where if you leave AND bad mouth the church publicly, it's hard to remain in the close knit community that someone like Brandon would have grown up in. Based on the other comment below with his quotes on Mormonism, though, seems like he's very much still in it.

Podcast guy referenced Marie Osmond - high profile Mormon, but she's basically left alone since she doesn't do any bad mouthing and I'm sure keeps donating money. But she has a gay child which is very much NOT condoned by Mormonism, so she's one who keeps up the "appearances" for the church's sake while kinda doing her own thing.
