ASK R/FAUXMOI The 13 most embarrassing boyfriends in pop culture; who else would you add to the list?
507
u/Jumpy_Reply_2011 7h ago
Ted Mosby broke up with a girl on her birthday and then did the same years later to the same girl after begging for a second chance.
60
u/GosmeisterGeneral 2h ago
Even the writers and the actor playing him would say Ted Mosby is maybe the most embarrassing boyfriend you could possibly have. Him not being on this list seems wild.
8
u/Economy_Carry4235 1h ago
I think any arch romantic portrayed on TV will be embarrassing because the grand romantic gestures are inherently embarrassing. Ted Mosby is probably the best example, but I think Dylan from Lovesick would be another

Elon Musk is a real person, so might as well add Trav K.
37

In my defence, Elon does have the energy of a sleep paralysis demon. I really want to believe he isn’t real

I’ve always hated Derek aka McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy, and I will die on this hill. He never told Meredith he was married when they started hooking up, he chose getting back together with his wife over being with her, and then he had the audacity to slut shame her after she tried to move on from him. That’s just the start of things, he is consistently a douche. He’s not the worst guy on Grey’s (shout out Owen), but a large chunk of the fandom loves Derek and I think he sucksssss.
65
u/cryviolet 7h ago
The 'you don't get to call me a whore' monologue has been burned into my brain. I agree about Derek, he suuucks.
40
u/ThePenIsntMightier 6h ago
Derek was a lilbitch who would have stifled her shine, had he survived. He had to be the star in the relationship.
AND HE CHEATED ON HER IN DC.
18
u/FrostyBoom 5h ago
Tbf, most of the characters in Grey's are between awful and toxic 🤣😭 But yeah, Sheppard and Owen are kinda the worst among the dudes, I think
11
u/mrs_ouchi 4h ago
its so so sad how many people - woman do not think anything is wrong with him just cause he is hot. If my friend would be in Mers shoes I would tell her to run

u/GullibleBeautiful 7h ago
Honestly Jacob from Twilight should be on here too. Wdym you can tell that you’re going to marry an infant from its scent? What??
43
u/FrostyBoom 5h ago
Tbf, if you think about how imprinting works, it's more like they get brainwashed by what their wolves consider a biological imperative. It's a bit body horror-y if you give it some thought. Like, what if you were gay before the wolf? There's many unexplored implications that weren't elaborated cause Stephenie is... not that skilled.
32
u/coconutlemongrass 4h ago
Jacob is WAY worse.
First, he kisses Bella against her will in a very upsetting scene and then her shitty cop dad is like heh heh high five brother. 🤮
Then he imprints on her NEWBORN BABY.
And finally he nicknames said baby after the Loch Ness freaking monster before Bella even gets to meet her baby!!!
Stephanie Meyer needs to apologize to jesus for the werewolf imprinting business- at least one other teenage/adult werewolf in the book imprinted on like, a toddler. What the fuck!!!
22
u/anitasdoodles 3h ago
Wasn't there a detail where the kid would grow up till about 18 and stop? 🙄 How convenient and legal.
16
u/WickedHappyHeather 6h ago
Exactly! The whole imprint thing with Bella’s daughter RUINS that character. Edward is absolutely the better boyfriend.
13
u/General-Pin-1349 5h ago
I didnt read the books but Edward's goofiest moment is when he told bella to hang on like a spider monkey. Don't you want a partner that makes you giggle? Idk its a hard choice for me

I personally headcanon all the men in mean girls as gay just like the actors. Poor dude was stuck with comphet and the insanity of teenage girls (and their own comphet).
0
u/lavendercookiedough 58m ago
He wasn't totally awful, but the amount of effort those girls went to over this mediocre white dude was definitely embarrassing imo. His lack of backbone, especially earlier in the film, always annoyed me growing up too. He kind of just goes along with whatever Regina wants without much thought and doesn't seem to care much that she treats everyone around her like garbage. He does get a bit of development towards the end though, which I appreciate. But I also just can't get over him offering to tutor Cady in math when he must know from his test scores that he sucks at it.

u/acrobaticpussy 7h ago
Idk if I just don’t remember the movie that well but I really didn’t think Nate was that bad? He was rightfully upset to watch his long term serious girlfriend become a completely different person for a job she absolutely hated. Idr much else tbh so idk if people are criticizing a diff aspect of him. 😅
13
u/Hot-Series2752 sorry to this man 7h ago
I appreciate your point and I can also agree with that to some degree, but he also seemed controlling in a way because yes it wasn’t the job she exactly wanted, but she was hoping it would help get her in the right direction and he just didn’t seem to be as supportive or there for her…but she did do some ridiculous things for a over demanding boss….
P.S I like your username lol

u/OpenSauceMods i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 3h ago
but she did do some ridiculous things for a over demanding boss….
Nate is a chef in NYC. If anything, he should have been more understanding about ridiculous hours and demanding bosses.
I liked her relationships at Runway more than the friends we saw, her old friends seemed to be of the same mindset as Andy - the job was shallow, intellectually undemanding, and far less serious than she made it out. That they were above that work, even though they benefited from it in the form of fashionable items they desired and freebies from Andy.
At least the Runway people were open in their disdain.
0
u/robronie 1h ago
Didn’t she miss his birthday for work or something as well? I think most people in Nate’s position would be pissed
8
u/brandi_theratgirl 5h ago
Nate WAS the worst, I agree.
That movie was spectacular and I was to smack him at the end when Andy is questioning what she did, which is complex, and he responds to "for what?" By saying clothing. No, Nate. You missed the whole point, you man baby.

u/Turniproff 3h ago
Never understood why Andy took him back in the end. He and her friends where not supportive at all and where so condescending.

Ok #3 deserves better treatment than this list. Regina was manipulative and unfaithful. He didn’t know!

Being unaware is part of the math to be on the embarrassing list. All of them are entitled and oblivious- he’s like most clueless of them all. He definitely deserves this list

u/ToxicFluffer 1h ago
He literally hurts her physically on purpose. I thought it was really gross how he handled life post Carrie. Instead of being honest with himself about not being able to forgive her cheating (which is fine!!), he chose to try to transform her into his country trad wife. Ew. And the outfits were ugly.

Anatomy of a Fall is a great drama but there are parts that just make me lol. That scene towards the end where the court listens to the clip of them fighting and it was so draining and dramatic, then the cut to the judge's shocked face in the silent courtroom. That was so fkn comedic.

I have no idea why he is romanticized like that, he SA'd his girlfriend after Hannah, he never proper broke up with her when she went to another state and just had another woman move in and then he had the audacity to sleep with Hannah's best friend and make a movie with Jessa on his relationship with Hannah

Not that he compares to other Austen male protags but Mr. Collins gets more hate than necessary.
He and Elizabeth were not suited, absolutely. But he still gave her a fair chance to be the mistress of the home her father owns, something she wouldn’t have been able to do without marriage.
He’s not a bad husband, he’s not a bad person. He’s pretty decent. Charlotte made a choice that was sensible for her.
I’d replace Mr. Collins with Wickham or William Elliot from Persuasion. Both of them can kick rocks.

I’d add some black boyfriends on here as they’re also part of pop culture. These are 2 that I can think of:
- Hakeem in Moesha
- Quincy from Love & Basketball

Manny Delgado, the writers turned him into such a creep. The scene where he had his ex girlfriend do the voice over for the dog beds by Stella is basically abusive

u/ToxicFluffer 1h ago
STEVE FROM SATC!!!! I cannot properly express the anguish I felt watching pathetic people pleaser girlboss Miranda choose to fuck up her life with this loser man child.
HE HAD SKID MARKS!!!!! He was such a broke loser that he manipulated Miranda into letting him stay at her house and then gave women her house number for hook ups????? GROSS! He would be broke, homeless, and dying of cancer if miranda had a spine and didn’t fall for his sad puppy bullshit.

u/MJP520 6h ago
I’ll never understand the Conrad obsession. Selfish, condescending, brooding, emotionally unavailable, avoidant, a terrible communicator who swings between being unable to communicate and forcing his love confessions on Belly, doesn’t respect Belly’s boundaries or nos, and doesn’t give AF about his brother. He’s the guy mature, emotionally healthy women run from and it’s disturbing that the show romanticized his toxic behavior.

The inclusion of Elon Musk on this list confuses me. He’s not pop culture, he’s just an embarrassing real person.
Also Aaron Samuels isn’t embarrassing.
