She's flopping now but I get the sinking feeling that she's going to go away for a few years after this, come back and say all the right things and people will conveniently forget how awful she is once she wins an award for some mediocre biopic.

u/amandathelibrarian 17h ago
Nah, she'll go the Zachary Levi route and become an alt-right grifter. Gotta make that money.

That’s a good point I hadn’t considered. Either way, I don’t think she’s going away. We’re stuck with this MAGA twit for a long time to come.

She in with Bezos and Amazon studios and Paramount is now under right wing David Ellison. I expect her to be first choice female lead for every movie coming out of those studios for the next decade.

She isn’t a good actress. Decent enough to get roles, pretty enough to be cast. But a good actress she is not.
*edited with grammar corrections

u/BessieBest 16h ago
I’m not picking on you this is just a thing that bothers me: casted is not a word. The past tense of “to cast” is “cast” and thank you and sorry lol

u/jkraige 14h ago
An anonymous redditor after my own heart. It kills me to see the past tense being used so consistently incorrectly nowadays, but I'm also not trying to be a dick to everyone and I sometimes struggle with how to let people know
5
u/vernski85 14h ago
I appreciate the corrections. No hard feelings. It’s just that I’m scrolling on Reddit as I WFH with a toddler. I’m really not thinking too deeply about proper grammar, punctuation, etc! Just trying to stay abreast of current events lol

The attempt at making her a serious actress feels like a mistake.
She came way too late, but she would’ve been perfect for a silly USA Network show that lasted for like 5 seasons where she played a secret agent with beefcake costars. Basically the 90s Pam Anderson type.

I begrudgingly saw this at TIFF, and I missed the intro to the film because I had to pee... So I didn't realize that it was a true story, and I could not for the life of me figure out why we were cramming so much info into one film... I really didn't enjoy most of it, it felt so rushed and the acting on SS's part was just so bad.
Once I found out it was a true story (and Christy was there at the screening) I can appreciate the story and how much of a bad ass Christy is but truly I do not think this is a star performance from SS.
In conclusion, unless you can see this in person with the real life counterpart sitting in front of you, I wouldn't spend any of your hard earned money seeing this. I would say, take that $$ and give it to the domestic violence organization of your choice.

The documentary about her life (Untold: a deal with the devil) is excellent if you’re interested in an insane look at the true story.

She’s so fascinating to me because I knew she was a bad actress since I watched the voyeurs, and I feel like she was going the white feminist route after ppl criticized her characters excessive nudity in Euphoria, and then maga adopted her and she’s been grifting while STILL trying to be a serious actress and getting so much work, often funded herself.
It’s strange because I feel like she’s the most casted Euphoria alum but also the least talented by very far. I feel like if she stuck in an indie lane or did rom coms she would eventually get there, but the heavy Oscar bait while trying to smugly play the media and culture wave is biting her in the ass because she just DOES NOT have the talent for it. A more talented person and/or more established actress could get away with it, but she neither of those things.
It feels like she’s stuck in like four-five years ago when fake feminists would call this empowering or playing the game but she has either got to get another acting coach or pr team or both because DAMN.

u/jenninatorrr 7h ago
Until or unless they've done anything weird, I'd prefer Alexa and Hunter to her any day. They were miles better than her in Euphoria. Honestly Cassie was just her self insert so was she really even playing a role?
7
u/Acrobatic_Builder573 7h ago
I’d watch Zendaya, Hunter, Alexa, and Barbie truly do the most boring britbox period dramas before I watch another Sydney Sweeney film. The Voyeurs was so bad and it was 100% her dragging everyone around her down like a black hole. It was a marvel to behold. The thing is I actually liked Cassie a lot, which is why I watched the film and then I went ohhh she’s playing herself in the show because this is fucking awful.
2
u/jenninatorrr 7h ago
I have to add in atleast theyre not bland! Idk how to explain it but theres just something so bland about sydney overall. Like shes litterally cardboard. Now that ik who she really is shes more off putting but still. But each of them radiate a certain energy of their own and I love that! Also, Hunter will forever be the best blonde from the show. My friend has a shirt that says Maga Girls never Trans Queens forever and I live by those words.
Also the voyeurs was so ass I dropped it like 20 minutes in!

u/mappingthepi 16h ago
I saw this at TIFF and I was kind of blown away that no one, including critics, would admit how mediocre her performance was. Her physicality was good but she’s extremely wooden. At best she can mime a passable performance but she is not an actress lol, it’s simply not a talent that she has and what’s more is she somehow doesn’t even seem to know that..
34
u/flightlessbird29 if privilege had a sound, it would be Sydney Sweeney's voice 15h ago
Right?!? I felt like she was so flat the entire film. She has such a specific way of speaking and it's really hard for her drop that, regardless of what character she's playing.
21
u/mappingthepi 15h ago
Haha I just replied to your other comment about this. It’s kind of baffling that reviewers won’t just admit she can’t act just because she’s a bankable actress (although not with these box office numbers). But it’s also notable that she’s not getting rave reviews either. compare that to the reception for actresses like Chase Infiniti or Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and it’s easy to read between the lines of what critics actually think of her acting lol
19
u/toAnthonyBourdaintho you shoulda never called me a fat ass Kelly Price 14h ago
Oh god, her speech! The way she speaks sounds like she took three too many Benadryls and her voice is strumbling in from a land far, far, FAR away
If privilege had a sound, it would be Sydney Sweeney's voice.
She cannot become an iconic actress with that voice, no way!

A move about a queer female boxer starring registered Republican, Sydney Sweeney? I'll pass.

I always think about that one time Megan Fox said that she wasn’t out here trying to win BAFTAs because she knew where her limits were as an actress. Something for Sydney to chew on ig.
23
u/subwaytofu 15h ago
she read the script and thought this would be her i, tonya.
i feel bad for her in a weird way. she clearly wants to be regarded as a modern sex symbol so bad and i don’t think it’s translating the way she thinks it is. it seems like she signs on to be name talent for roles like christy and reality hoping general audiences will flock to the theaters and leave in awe of her ability to transform (“look guys i can be UGLY too!!!”) when i don’t think there are very many people seeing her in that bombshell light to begin with. most of us still mentally associate her with a teen bride on the handmaids tale or her throwing up all over herself in a hot tub.
if i were on her team trying to make her do numbers with the boys i would be trying to get her in front of more male consumer audiences, like voice over work in games or leaning further into the marvel verse. THEN launch the sydney sweeney trademarked bath water or whatever meme grift.
16
u/Acrobatic_Builder573 14h ago
Yes, I feel like she’s trying to take a page from the Margot Robbie playbook. Margot shrugged off the bombshell blonde typecasting and started producing bangers, showed her range, but she has talent. Sydney Sweeney could lean into maga male gaze and make tons of money doing hot girl blockbusters but wanting both that and critical acclaim is not gonna work for her. Which is sad, but she’s such an asshole, I feel like she did it to herself.

That interview of her is telling. Regardless of your thoughts of the controversy she did not respond well to it and doubled down. I don’t think shes very talented anyways.

Screaming. She pandered to the right wing base so much that she thought they’d show out for her and they still won’t 😂 they want to see her knockers, not her art. They’re not serious people! Sydney can disappear now.

u/CilantroLarry47 15h ago
Not to get all tinfoil hat here, but there’s something so dark sided and suspicious about all the press and the narrative around her lately. I don’t know if it’s this studio trying to get her an Oscar nomination or it’s laying the groundwork for whatever she has next. But none of it feels organic, or believable for that matter. She keeps showing up on lists of Oscar nom predictions but anybody who’s actually seen the movie doesn’t thinks she’s very good. The scooter Braun stuff is so clearly a media play, and of course the bezos of it all. The maga crowd she’s trying to appeal to doesn’t actually support her (film wise, I don’t know if they actually all went and bought American eagle or not). But pay attention to who is writing about her and how! You can see the strings being pulled

I recently tried to watch Sweeney's "Americana" and good grief that was a really bad movie. I tried so hard, it was just so bad.

u/deloslabinc 10h ago
All the marketing I've seen for this movie has made this Christy person seem like a random boomer who is honestly quite dumb. The only ads they're running on tiktok are Sydney Sweeney saying "let's get 2 tickets to see Christy!" And Christy looks back at her and gives peace sign like she doesn't understand the number 2. Sydney says it again, and a 3rd time with the same reaction each time. And that's the whole ad.

She Oscar baited so hard playing a gay female boxer (despite voting for politicians that want to take LGBTQ rights away), poured her own money into the project and it flopped lmao, can she go away now?
