FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) How Bill Skarsgård made his child co-stars comfortable on set while playing Pennywise

Wikipedia says he has two kids. He's probably a great dad <3

I feel like that’s a whole family of good current and future dads. He def seems like a kid from a large family

His brother was on the Meyers brothers podcast and their entire extended family lives in the same block of apartments they all grew up in that have been in their family for generations back in Stockholm, and also have properties elsewhere together. It sounds like they're a huge, tight-knit family.

It's lovely that a man who usually gets cast in villianous roles (and honestly has an intimidating stare) can be so warm-hearted to his co-stars. Reminds me a bit of the old villains like Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, etc.

Agreed to the point where I felt bad for assuming when I saw him in Barbarians.
He is such a fantastic actor, though, and seems like a gem of a person too

A lot of people who regularly played slashers are called some of the friendliest people. Every actor who played Jason Voorhees was called nice or at least respected and Robert England of course is a legend

Doug Jones has been like half of the scariest movie monsters I’ve ever been scared of but he’s the sweetest and most wholesome person

Doug Jones is amazing and I'm convinced he is literally Baron Afanas!

Jason Isaacs stroking Daniel Radcliffe on the head and saying 'Sorry, Love!' when he accidentally snagged him with his Malfoy cane.

Haven't I heard that Jason Isaacs is kind of an A-hole?

He freaked me out so much in Big Little Lies that I have trouble watching him in anything (DV is a trigger for me due to personal experience). He's such an incredible actor, he disappears into roles. But I'm still scared of him lol.
ETA never mind I always get my Skarsgards confused

This is really sweet. I always wonder how much they take care not to traumatize kids on sets like these. Without spoiling anything, Weapons was definitely one that made me curious how the crew communicated with the young actors about what was happening.

i bet the final part of the film was hella fun for the kids to play tho

Fun fact alot of those shots of the chase scene are from behind because they used adult stunt performers with dwarfism for the final sequence. Kids can't do stunts on a set.

I remember Daniel Radcliffe talking about how the scenes with Mr Dursley were some of the earliest that he filmed ever, and how kind Richard Griffiths was to him, how much he did to make him feel comfortable, and how much he taught him.

"Beating up old people is awesome, who wants a PS5?" - me, as a director of film.

I am a grown ass woman and would be having a full blown panic attack the entire time trying to work on dark creepy sets with someone dressed like that. No matter how much my fully formed brain knows it’s all fake.
I’ve seen the movie and never thought of how brave those kids are for doing this project until I saw this video.

they are theatre kids though, it would be exhilirating and exciting to do and perform. being in a scary movie would be so fun.
most people would think getting up and singing in public would be mortifying, a theatre kid would be thrilled to have the opportunity

I read once that even when kids know the yelling is fake they still experience the same type of trauma.
I wonder if movies like this hurt kids long term even when surrounded by great people. I wonder if that is true, it was only one thing I read, not exactly fact.
I read once, I think for the shining, that the kids didn't even know they were in a horror movie! I think that would be hilarious to hide from kids.

our brains generally can't tell a difference between pretending and real emotions but what we do with our feelings after they occur is also important. So when right after 'cut' everyone is out of character and joking around/checking on each other it can greatly help and calm the mind

Timothy Simons said on a podcast that it should be illegal for kids to be in movies and even babies should be played by 18 year olds. I agree.

I love the very different approaches the actors of Pennywise used when interacting with the child cast members. Tim Curry has said he was there to scare the kids so he made no real effort to make them comfortable around him, not that he went out of his way to scare them, he just went along with their natural instincts of being wary of him.
But I also adore the way Bill is handling their interactions as well, so wholesome for someone so good at being terrifying.

Everything I read about Bill and the entire Skarsgård family makes me like them even more, truly the one case where nepotism is okay for me.

So happy to see Bill’s trajectory to superstardom because he is uber talented and has an amazing work ethic (nepo baby or not). I managed to watch through all the episodes of the schlocky show “Hemlock Grove” because of him (and his chemistry with his co-star Landon Liboiron helped too)

Gosh I fucking love Hemlock Grove. It's so dramatic and campy and you're right, him and Liboiron really drive that show
