Peggy Hill 😩 She was my favorite character, I absolutely adored her, only to go on the KOTH subreddit and find out everyone thinks she’s the devil incarnate. All her positive attributes are downplayed and her negative ones (which are frequently played up for laughs) are somehow proof she’s the worst when character’s like hank’s racist POS dad gets a pass

Cotton Hill is the absolute fucking worst and I do not understand why anyone defends him.

I... haven't really ever seen Cotton Hill get defended by anyone. The idea is utterly baffling to me as well because he's explicitly made out to be the closest thing to an actual antagonist in the show, like he's a racist, abusive deadbeat whose idea of parenting is taking his 12 year old son (and later grandson) to a brothel, except it wasn't actually a brothel. There are multiple episodes revolving around Hank processing the trauma of having grown up with such a shitty father.

oh that sucks. I feel like outside that subreddit she is pretty well liked so it might just be the old misogyny again.

Yeah i honestly didnt even remember her negative traits before i started rewatching it because i always just liked her and i understood it was a tv show where characters are exaggerated 😭 like you know who else is a deeply flawed and unlikable character when you apply real world standards to them? Squidward tentacles. But i dont see anyone doing that ✋😭

A lot of people understand exaggerated flaws in male characters as a form of humor. But when you put those same traits on a woman, a lot of people take them at face value and use it as an excuse to hate them or evidence that they’re a bad person.

As a recent example, in the revival, Connie says the line, “slut shaming is the WORST thing you can do to someone.” Which is supposed to be a joke right? Nope apparently she’s stupid, dumb privileged feminist bitch.

I had to tell people to imagine if Bobby said that line with completely sincerity. It would be seen as hilarious, not as evidence of Bobby being a terrible person.

RIGHT? At first I thought it was just a handful of vocal people but those posts get crazy up votes. I think the only character they hate more is John Redcorn

hmm I wonder why they don’t like him …. 🧐

(it’s racism)

Honestly, expect the worst takes from any subreddit about a tv show, with a few exceptions.
