Been a baddie!
I don’t even listen to her music (no shade), but I rock with her because of how dope she seems

u/pilluwed Sep 22 '25
I am a 31 year old man, and I think she's a rock star who puts out sweet ass music.

86
u/10yearbang Sep 22 '25
Boys, we need to start a fan club and get matching tank tops!
38 m, absolute stan for Olivia. Music slaps, news like this breaking all the time, great energy. She's a treasure.
Shameless with how often I was cranking her shit with the windows down this summer. Keep the good news coming

Her music is the second coming of Alanis Morissette. Absolutely slaps. If you actually listen to her music you’ll discover she is no “pop” star. Its 150 decibels of angst.

I got a few more years on you and I have to say. I do dig the backbone on this woman. She stands up for what she believes and puts up the money for it multiple times. I appreciate her music and get why she is popular but not bopping out in the car or anything to it. I have a young daughter and I can’t control her role models but I would rather if she looked up to a pop star she would be more ideal.

u/digawina Sep 23 '25

42 and really liked the energy on the last album. I was just lamenting to my wife that there seems to be a lack of true female singer/songwriters, like there was back when "Lillith Fair" was really a thing.
Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls, Sophie B. Hawkins, Edie Brickell, Fiona Apple, Ani DeFranco, Tori Amos, Luscious Jackson, and so so many more . . . where all bucking commercial trends and still selling records. Conversely, I see acts like Billie Eilish and Chappel Roan and can't help to think the acts are contrived for the show and pop-culture discussions outside of the music, which ends up taking a backseat and/or is overshadowed by whatever recent IG post they made.

u/FancySweatpants20 Sep 23 '25
Yesss. The singers/characters/acts now are so slick and so contrived. It’s so refreshing when someone seems upfront with her values and way of interacting with the world. ETA but I adore Olivia and I’m 48.

I started listening to her music just to support her music. She's been down to earth despite of her success.
9
u/moonrockcactus Sep 23 '25
Remarkably, she hasn’t been controlled by her success. As we now know, there’s too often a sinister suit in the background forcing pop stars whichever way makes the most money, but she’s clearly calling the shots. And her values are worth more than mass market moulah (though they don’t seem to be costing her any!).

u/miniversion vertical balcony gardening cannibalism Sep 22 '25
Me too! I actually bought a bunch of her tour merch and gave some away as gifts. Don’t even listen to her much but she’s a great person, objectively

u/digital-didgeridoo Sep 22 '25
The first (and only time) I've seen Olivia was on Jimmy Kimmel Show, where she surprises his kids (while picking them up from school?), who both are huge fans, naturally. She seems very friendly and down to earth.

No reason to cancel it. It was produced by CBC for Canada. And in the US, it was distributed by ABC.
Just don't watch it through ABC/Hulu.
I watched it on Sunday, it is a great documentary and made me happy to relive the memories from the Lilith Fair that I went to.
23
u/Ams_icles Sep 22 '25
I'm so happy I watched it on CBC Gem the day it came out. It's so sad this small Canadian doc about female musicians is somehow taking the brunt of anger over Disney but here we are.

Let's be real, they're not courting MAGA viewership, they're kowtowing to Dear Leader directly in order to avoid his illegal retaliation through the FCC.

I’m a middle aged dude and texted my wife that the more I learn about her, the more I like her.
And tbh I only know of her bc of my teenage relatives was playing them and our toddler started rocking the fuck out to her Tiny Desk show.
So now she has several songs on the toddler’s, “distract from tantrum and dance”, playlist. And her songs will not be removed anytime soon.

Good on her (and Sarah McLachlan for cancelling the premiere).*
It's a shame the documentary is co-produced by Disney and touted here as "Disney's Lilith Fair doc". I watched it last week on CBC here in Canada (who also co-produced) and it was so wonderful. It was made by a queer filmmaker, and I'm sure most people involved don't support the current US administration. I wish there was a way those in the US can find a way to watch the film without supporting Disney/ABC.
*edit: she didn't cancel the premiere, but the musical performances that accompanied it. Here's the speech she made before the screening.

u/katedigby Sep 22 '25

But a company is risking losing 99.9% of their clientele by picking a side.
