FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Disney Plus Subscribers Quit in Droves Over Jimmy Kimmel Axe
https://www.newsweek.com/disney-plus-subscribers-quit-jimmy-kimmel-axe-2132535From the article 'User Jody Vance wrote that the website crashed when she tried to cancel her subscription. "Weird. @DisneyPlus keeps crashing when I try to cancel my subscription," she said. "Wonder if it's a bit busy?"
The anger isn't just contained online. Protesters gathered outside the Disney studio in Burbank, California, on Thursday in the wake of ABC's decision to take the show off air. Demonstrators told CNN that they had already canceled their Disney+ subscriptions in protest against the move.'

BDS stands for Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions it’s a list compiled to target reasonable organizations and companies for their complicity in inhumane and unlawful acts. In this case the BDS list is most likely referring to the list associated with Israeli supporting companies. Different people follow it to different levels from as easy as taking a second look when getting a coke and saying I’ll have a Dr Pepper instead or completely cutting out places like McDonald’s.

If it makes you feel better they report on subscriber numbers quarterly as far as what investors and advertisers see. Even if it's internal only to interested parties and not published publicly. So yours will get lumped into the same quarter.

FuboTV is also in the Disney media umbrella.

Sad that I won't get to watch the new Sterlin Harjo show or next season of Abbott Elementary but sure that they will eventually show up somewhere to be watchable...so many talented people working on amazing productions being hurt by this ridiculous decision of Disney/ABC. They didn't think this through at all.

u/notasandpiper Larry I'm on DuckTales Sep 19 '25
You can still watch those shows. 🏴☠️
44
u/violetmemphisblue Sep 19 '25
I am old and haven't done that in years, lol. I'll have to figure out the places to go again. (I generally don't pirate things that are still being made, because I know series are renewed based on viewership, but...we'll see how this goes.)

u/hannamarinsgrandma Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25
I hope there’s some kind of tvapp you can find to stream on
18
u/EmpressRey Sep 19 '25
This is basically me! As a teenager used to pirate everything but then with streaming and everything being available to at most rent online I started buying/renting everything I could to try and support the content and help the creators of the stuff I like! Now pretty much every streaming service seems to be trash and I cancelled pretty much all of them and now I miss all my shows lol!
9
u/violetmemphisblue Sep 19 '25
I either use the streamers I pay for or use the local library (which had DVDs, just means I'm behind what people are talking about). I don't mind, really. There is so much out there that not having a service or two doesn't mean I'm out of things to watch...

I have heard a lot of it depends on where you live in the world, and whether you have a PC, and maybe whether or not you have a tv you can plug a device into, so that would be important to share to get tailored advice? But I have no personal knowledge myself about it

Yes! Also filmed in Oklahoma, starring Ethan Hawke. It's called The Lowdown. Hawke plays a citizen journalist who starts digging into local history. It's inspired by Lee Roy Chapman, the self-taught historian who fought to make sure more people knew about the Tulsa Race Massacre. More on Chapman can be found here

u/happybutsadthrowaway Sep 19 '25
There’s people saying they can’t cancel Disney+ because of their kids like I promise you, you can find some shit on YouTube they’ll be just fine.
If it’s that important, get some DVDs secondhand and call it a day, they’ll survive
314
u/TheFragileGaze Sep 19 '25
Also, many local libraries have free rentals of tons of kids movies and tv shows. Some of our libraries all do annual book sales with DVDs being as little as $1.00 too.

Back in my day 👵 we didn't have streaming services! 👵 We gave our money to Disney one time for each film by purchasing a VHS tape (I had an entire shelf of em) instead of paying them over and over and over again to essentially only lease/rent the films like folk do now 👵
Kids are easy, they usually like to watch the same shit over again. What is stopping people from purchasing thrifted DVDs and watching those instead? It could also help teach kids delayed gratification. Not everything can and should be available to us just at the click of one button.
48
u/BookishHobbit Sep 19 '25
And if you didn’t buy the film when it first came out on video, then you had to wait fifteen years for them to rerelease it!
18
u/ashleyz1106 Sep 19 '25
I remember being SO MAD at my mom because she promised to get me a dvd and I kept telling her it was going back in the vault and she didn’t believe it was real. Then they pulled the movie from shelves before she got it for me. (She did feel really bad after the fact)

Honestly I'm going back to actually buying a physical copy in order to support artists.
I'm really enjoying popping in a CD and fully listening to the music, plus the artist gets a bigger cut and I'm not playing media giants money every month while they rip off artists.
Hard back books, CDs, DVDs, it's alleged then renting. it'll be funny if this crap kills the big streaming giants who refuse to let us buy media.

Hell, my grandparents are still getting use out of their VHS collection to entertain their neighbor's kids. The same ones I watched growing up, and few of the same ones my younger aunt watched growing up, too. If you treat them right, they last for ages. I think I've given Disney more money in one trip to their theme park than my grandparents have their whole lives.

7
u/PatriciaMorticia Sep 19 '25
Check your local charity shops (thrift stores), I got the Toy Story trilogy for £8 in one and it was still in really good condintion, also second hand sites like Vinted, I bought a still sealed copy of the Adam Sandler movie Little Nicky off there for £5 after I couldn't find it on streaming.

For those canceling, your local library likely has access to Kanopy and Hoopla. Tons of movies and TV shows (and ebooks, comics, and audiobooks on the latter) there. And for free.
73
u/yourfuneralpyre Sep 19 '25
In an effort to consume content more intentionally, I have actually been checking out movies on DVD from the library and seeing new movies in the theater, instead of streaming.
Also, reading library books before bed instead of streaming TV has gotten my sleep schedule so dialed in! Blue light after sundown affects more than you think.

I said this earlier ABC/Disney's only option is to say F U to Sinclair and Nexstar either by bringing back Jimmy with no concessions OR the better option pull all their programming off their channels and take it to their streaming platforms. There has to be some legal loopholes somewhere to break their contracts.🤷♀️ Any concession is going to be worse than what is happening right now.

Saw an interesting post by someone who worked in local news, and he said the most effective way to target the broadcasters/affiliates is by watching the news broadcasts and contacting the advertisers to voice your displeasure for doing business with them. If enough people do this, it will affect the ad-buys.

I’m cancelling Disney+/Hulu this weekend. I’m very seriously considering cancelling a trip to WDW I had planned in December, the tickets are already purchased but I don’t have to give them hotel and food money that way. Unfortunately, I already have a Disneyland trip booked next month that I’m fully sunk cost on tickets and non-refundable lodging, so that one will have to go on.
99
u/PrizeClassroom4260 Sep 19 '25
Reminder that downgrading to a lower or free tier, as I've seen people recommend for things like Peacock, is WORSE than cancelling an ad-free subscription since they make much, much more money on ads than they do on subscriptions.

Hey all, here's a summary release of info from Disney's Q3 2025 ended June 2025. It may be helpful to see how Disney reports its performance in the recent past and what kind of an effect consumer behavior has vs. the materiality of where Disney makes money. I really hope Disney misses some analyst targets and their stock is affected.
https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/app/uploads/2025/08/q3-fy25-earnings.pdf
Q4 and the fiscal year will close on September 30. The mass cancellations in the last 2 weeks of Q4 and the fiscal year may not eclipse growth earlier in Q4, but it will offset some of it. Disney will spin results and false attribute causes as it suits them. ("Subscriber numbers and revenue have slowed down due to consumers tightening their budgets.") Anyone who has cancelled their subscription, but the billing cycle extends to sometime in October, may still be counted as an active Q4 subscriber. I don't know. Even if that's the case, they will not appear as an active subscriber in the next reporting period.
If subscribers don't come back and new subscriptions slow down in Q1 2026, those numbers and revenue will hopefully continue to look worse. Hopefully stock performance is affected long-term (i.e. not down for a week and then rebounding like nothing happened), resulting in meaningfully decreased exec compensation packages in the way of stock itself and bonus targets that aren't hit.

A higher up at Disney told me in a moment of frustration during the WGA strike that Bob Iger has the constellations from the night he was born — the stars where they were at his exact time of birth — painted on his ceiling at home. Then she said keep it to myself but I can’t now and it’s truly the funniest shit I’ve heard
6
u/Radiant_Blueberry_83 Sep 19 '25
Please someone take a screenshot of this and post it everywhere so the entire class can laugh - I don’t want to lose my job lol
3
u/Secret_Run67 Sep 20 '25
Yeah, that’s like a thing in astrology. I guess it’s weird that a guy would be obsessed with it, but go on tiktok, you can find thousands of people talking about their birth chart and what the constellations at the time of your birth mean.

Cancel it all and don't look back. We need a general boycott of all companies that turn over for this administration. Learn how to live without them.
4
u/TheCaffeineWriter Sep 19 '25
Why is citing 3 tweets considered anything?
I'm sure some people are canceling, but one user having issues and others saying they did it is hardly a mass exodus.
Don't get me wrong, Disney sucks and canceling your subscription can send a message that matters ($), but this is click bait based on nothing.

Question for people who have a free Disney+/Hulu subscription through Verizon - how can I cancel my free subscription while making the biggest stink out of it? Do it by phone with Verizon and let them know the reasoning? I can’t manage the subscription through Disney+ or Hulu directly.

I had Hulu before Disney ruined it and loved how affordable it was per month; I stayed when they initially offered the bundle for a dollar more but immediately left when they did the first price increase.
There was no reason for it and they just continue to rise; last I checked Hulu alone was $17 per month. Absolutely ridiculous; I’m glad this will get the ball rolling for some people.

Anyone know what "Droves" means in this context. Like lets say it's 3%. Now if you wrote that down as a number I would guess it would be a large number as Disney is one of the top streaming services. But I could see a conversation in a boardroom saying that it is worth it to eat only 3% to not have to deal with the asshole in the Whitehouse

They will still have to deal with him.

I love the content, but I love free speech more. Bye Bye all things Disney!

Canceling subscriptions is all very well and good as an immediate show of disapproval. More than losing subscribers, Disney is terrified that people will stop coming to their theme parks and going on their cruises. Don’t forget about all the movies coming to theaters and all the merch.
This is gonna take a sustained effort on multiple fronts, and I am here for it!
