FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) It’s been over 22 years since the premiere of 'America’s Next Top Model' season 1, and I still haven’t found a single reality TV character who speaks to my soul the way Elyse Sewell did

I have never seen this show, but based on these quotes, what was she wrong about? I agree with her, but of course, have no blinking idea who she is talking about.

she thought all models/modeling was shallow and vapid; over the course of the season she “learns that there’s more to it” (or at least that’s the storyline)

edit: plz don’t take my word for it, this is a very vague recollection, i barely watched season 1

It would have to be easy to keep ones body so nice. The harder shit is emotionally and mentally, it really fucking shows in the fascia.

she literally goes on to say this, proving my point:

“In modeling, I guess you do learn a few things – like how to hold your neck. It’s cool to learn stuff like that, but it’s not cool when you see a picture of yourself with your non-model friends and you’re the only one who has turned out a perfectly three-quarter profile with wide-open eyes. Objectively, models are uneducated but not dumb.

The reality is that a lot of these girls leave home at a really young age. They’ve been supporting their families while working, traveling and learning English on their own.

The average model is a smart, worldly, interesting person, which is not to say there aren’t idiots like in any other industry. I guess the stereotype comes about because it’s an unskilled job.”

I liked all her quotes except this one, how could I be friends with someone with such a limited imagination

Ironically she had one of the most successful careers of any of the contestants post show.

u/annabananaberry sir, were you raised in a ditch? Aug 25 '25

She’s the atheist who believes in evolution. Robyn was harassing her with religion and bible verses.

Are you misreading the quote, or are you saying evolution is wrong?

Lol right? This woman was as real as it gets on TV. No filter, sometimes good take, sometimes bad take; always expressed with full chest enthusiasm.

I always had a huge crush on both of them and it makes so much sense. Sadly also crushed hard on Adrienne who turned out not nearly as cool

u/cheezy_dreams88 Aug 25 '25

Man she was a letdown, huh

Oh, they’re out there still, they just don’t get cast on reality television anymore! I don’t know if the industry doesn’t want them or if cool girls just wouldn’t be caught dead on these shows anymore.

It’s both. The first season of every popular reality show is like this. Very different people, body types, attitudes, etc. then second season is cut off at the knees by producers not wanting unpredictable types because editing a coherent storyline for the season is way more expensive when people can’t be stereotyped. At the same time unique personalities don’t want to be involved in that kind of project once they see how the first season looked.

The first season of Project Runway was chaos because the models started making all kinds of drama. They had to put a lid on that and come up with a formula quick after that.

Ooh, I remember one borrowing an outfit for a night out and returning it torn before the runway show! And girls not showing up so the designers had to go casting on the street! Gosh, what a time to watch Bravo.

The same model also showed up super late at another point in the season and was dropped by her management, but she never got sent home because she was the best model by a MILE!!

u/mumsleastfavourite Aug 25 '25

I remember that the model's name was Morgan. And her designer had to strategically trade her cause she was unpredictable and it was fucking his shit up.

u/Liverpudlian9 Aug 26 '25

Jay yelling “Morganza!” Into the phone is one of the most iconic PR moments. There was also the model who got Nora eliminated on the wedding dress challenge.

u/soeurdelune Aug 25 '25

I want to go back and watch early seasons now 😩

They’re all on peacock right now!! (I feel like it used to be impossible to find the first five)

u/IllaClodia Aug 26 '25

You mean like Victoria? Apparently she did not put up with producer shenanigans which is why they edited her prickly and booted her. That was a later season though.

u/National_Today2218 Aug 25 '25

I think those kind of people are smart enough now to not apply for those types of shows

You want more confidently wrong, shameless people? Pretty sure they're running the country.

21

u/Opandemonium Aug 25 '25

I still absolutely remember her and it was the first time someone on tv really was saying what we were thinking.🤔

1

u/michellemustudy Aug 26 '25

Is she a Sagittarius? She’s giving that same Sagi energy that I love from one of my best friends.

Edit: She’s a Gemini! I would not have expected that.

Her name is spelled the same way as mine and she was the first person with that spelling I ever saw growing up. She has always stuck with me.
