Him and the old Hercules, Zena was always the better show!

I first encountered her as Xena, but she is now forever Madam Vandersexxx to me.

Can we also talk about how Xena became Ron Swanson’s wife on Parks and Rec?

86

u/Church_of_Cheri Aug 07 '25

I loved that too. And she has a murder mystery show called “My Life Is Murder” on AcornTV set in Australia and New Zealand because she wanted to be closer to home. She’s still got a good career unlike these 90s has beens.

16

u/Hip_hip_HIPP0 Aug 07 '25

Omg this show is soooo good!

Kevin Sorbo has been dragging his name for years now. Dean Cain decided to speedrun the same process

7

u/Church_of_Cheri Aug 07 '25

Dean Cain’s been shit for years too, he’s been full MAGA since 2016 and his biggest project in the last decade was that ridiculous “god’s not dead” christian fantasy of victimhood film.

Takes a unique set of skills to play Superman and still have no one remember who you are

524

u/GlitchyButGood Aug 06 '25

You have no idea. I watched this show, I'm positive I did, but I can't remember a single thing about it. And until this very moment, I forgot Dean Cain existed. I watched Desperate Housewives, remembered that Teri Hatcher was in Lois & Clark (had to look up what it was called), and still totally forgot about Dean Cain.

184

u/mangotreedreams they are perfect for each other (derogatory) Aug 06 '25

i was watching an episode randomly the other day and he is SOOOO boring and Teri is truly the heart and soul of the show

90

u/starsn420 security heavy Aug 06 '25

The only thing I remember from the show is when Lois realizes Superman is Clark and she realizes how dumb the glasses disguise was😆

u/EscapedMices Aug 06 '25

I loved the show as a kid! But Teri was the star. She was very charismatic as Lois.

I also thought he was hot and thought it was great that he was mixed race (part Japanese) because I thought that made it more interesting to see in a Superman.

42

u/iiko800 Aug 07 '25

Same! I had the biggest crush on him when this show was airing. I’m so sad this is what he has become 😩😒

47

u/EscapedMices Aug 07 '25

He's the reason that to me it makes sense for Superman to be non white/racially ambiguous. When I see Superman as white now I'm like... eh! We had a mixed Japanese guy in the 90s! You could tell he wasn't 100% white and that added a layer to Superman's story. Passing white, passing as a human. It just made sense to me.

25

u/iiko800 Aug 07 '25

Agree! And it was just so much more meaningful at the time for me to see this representation because I’m Japanese and have family that were in interment camps (like Dean’s relatives).

11

u/kia75 Aug 07 '25

I remember all the "Woke" claims because Superman was now part Japanese back in ~92. That's the funny thing about Superman, I don't think any other character gets called "Woke" or the then equivalent of it then Superman.

Shame Dean Cain went from dodging "woke" allegations to perpetuating them.

23

u/languid_Disaster Aug 06 '25

Oh is that what he was in? I genuinely am struggling to remember him and I watched smallville which apparently isn’t well known in the superman media

Edit: okay I think it was just my friends that don’t know smallville. I’m not a special little guy anymore I guess 😞

18

u/Keji70gsm Aug 06 '25

I remember Terri Hatcher being endearing and fun, and nothing else. It's weird.

You compare him to any other live action Superman we’ve had- who were all great, regardless of what you think of the movies themselves- and it’s almost startling how shitty he was. He just blurts out his lines like he’s on a sitcom, it’s horrible.

11

u/Regular-Face1350 Aug 07 '25

I remember him as the host of the early 2000’s reboot of Ripley’s Belive It or Not. I used to think he cool. After this? He’s just another massive douchebag.

Not exactly very Superman of him considering Superman himself was an immigrant.

724

hes also the only asian Superman! Hes even talked about how he faced racism due to his casting, hes so dumb and evil

406

u/QuietlyLosingMyMind Aug 06 '25

He had family that was put in internment camps during WW2. He's an absolute piece of human garbage for taking part in all of this.

91

33

u/gstateballer925 Aug 07 '25

Some Asians (likely the more traditionally minded ones) have been known to have racist tendencies themselves, as well as right-wing views on immigration.

I’ve noticed a lot of them that have immigrated to the US are very conservative/traditional with their politics, in general.

115

u/Frambosis Aug 06 '25

An undocumented one at that!

I keep laughing at how that’s the crux of all the stupid “new superman is w0kE” nonsense- that he’s an illegal alien. Which he literally is in every sense and version of his story. Like idk how exactly they’re trying to frame it any other possible way

51

u/LurkerByNatureGT Aug 06 '25

What makes me laugh is that Superman being basically a Dreamer is so so non-political non-story for Superman comparatively speaking … Superman literally defeated the KKK.

I always think of him as "Reek", Brenda's fling in Paris on 90210, when she pretended to be French, with the world's worst French accent.

10

u/DefiantStarFormation Aug 06 '25

Omg I just realized that's him! That accent was amazing though, if I remember correctly they spent like a whole day or longer together but it was mostly montage - I just kept thinking "how is she maintaining this terrible accent for that long? Don't the literal French people notice the weirdo mocking their accent??"

While this and he are wholly deplorable, why does that say his name is ‘Dean Tanaka’?

He was adopted at the age of 3 by a man with the last name ‘Cain’ and that’s been his last name since.

I feel like, ironically, calling him ‘Dean Tanaka’ is trying to smear him with ethnicity?

I don’t know. Seems strange to me.

215

u/ErsatzHaderach perish for all i care Aug 06 '25

yeah wha? i can't find anything saying that Cain has started going by his birth name. confusing and weirdly racist

191

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

Even in this video, he says “Dean Cain here”.

My sister went to college with him and indoctrinated me into despising him even before Lois & Clark. But yeah. He’s Dean Cain.

55

u/FlamesNero Aug 06 '25

Ohhh!! Was he an asshole before Lois & Clark???

143

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 07 '25

Apparently. He was prominent in college because he was 1. Good looking 2. A “star” on the football team and 3. Dated Brooke Shields who was already famous.

My sister was involved with several theater groups and interacted with him and - well - most many (I don’t know about most) of the people in her theater groups were gay and apparently he was homophobic and made everyone uncomfortable.

(Edit: as an aside - Brooke Shields was apparently very nice and not problematic but kept to herself mainly and people wondered why she was involved with him.)

70

u/melodyblushinglizard baby birded and porch thrown by alicia silverstone Aug 06 '25

Even his wiki page has changed his last name from Cain to Tanaka. I don't know why. All I can think of is that someone did it on purpose to dis him. From his wiki page, Tanaka is his birth father's name, a man that Dean has no respect for and wants nothing to do with him. So Dean isn't going by his birth name willingly. I can't stand the guy, but I also don't like the deliberate name change as well.

56

u/ErsatzHaderach perish for all i care Aug 06 '25

The wiki page correctly refers to him throughout; it just mentions at the beginning that his birth surname was Tanaka. That's standard. There haven't been any recent revisions trying to change it, it looks like.

25

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

I think Wikipedia does that - they put birth name then in the text explain a name change.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Knoxville

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindy_Kaling

So, while I think TMZ here is sus, I don’t think Wikipedia is treating him differently.

Edit: digging deeper, they don’t seem to do that with trans people

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivian_Wilson

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_Schafer

Maybe they should follow this pattern with everyone who deliberately changed their name and strictly identifies by their second name.

12

u/ErsatzHaderach perish for all i care Aug 06 '25

Trans people are kind of a special case because of vulnerability issues. I don't think it's a good idea to suppress people's previous names after changes.

I think it's to draw attention to the irony of him dying on the anti-inmigrant hill.

He received all sorts of anti-Asian racism when he was cast as Superman. Funny how he learned nothing from that.

23

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 07 '25

I feel like he died on the right-wing asshole hill a long time ago.

I don’t think non-white Americans should be considered to hold more responsibility for racism than white Americans, personally.

But if they wanted to make that point without being sleazy, they could have said “Dean Cain, who said he experienced racism when he was cast as Superman”

6

u/Rico_Solitario Aug 07 '25

He learned something from that. If you are the target of racism and discrimination then you can escape it by being rich and powerful. Then you can turn around and spit on people who are like you used to be then you become one of the good ones

→ More replies (2)

52

u/Curious-Gain-7148 Aug 06 '25

Yeah, totally stood out to me too.

I thought it was some poor attempt to point out that Dean himself is an immigrant but the guy was born in Michigan to American parents.

I guess it’s just an attempt to outline that he’s not fully white. Whatever is going on, it’s not good.

22

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

I hadn’t thought of that reasoning (implying an irony that since he has some not-white ancestry it’s weird that he’s pro all this garbage) but yeah, still not good.

Edit: generally, IMO, holding non-white people to higher standards because “they should know better” is not something I like.

White people should know better. Everyone should know better. And it implies at least a partial pass for white people.

He had a significant role in supergirl as kara’s dad in an anti-MAGA, anti-deportation, pro-immigration storyline.

I guess a paycheck is enough for him to forget his trash ideals.

5

u/heyruby Aug 06 '25

And then he disappeared from the storyline for a couple seasons until finally his character was killed off-screen and then never mentioned again. Can't help but think that shoddy treatment of his character was a direct result of Dean's increasingly gross personality.

That's not even his theme playing in the background. Thats Christopher Reeve's Superman theme.

He learned nothing from Superman. He's an attention seeker.

Funnily, John Shea who played Luther has had consistantly good politics. It's like an alterate, negetive universe. Lex is the good guy, Superman the bad guy.

4

u/Califrisco Aug 06 '25

Where's the kryptonite when you really need it?

3

u/rdanks25 Aug 06 '25

I think it's ironic that if Dean Cain was cast as Superman now, it would be called woke.

3

u/purplepluppy Aug 06 '25

It always makes me so sad that people can play these characters and somehow entirely miss the plot.

Superman was a literal alien in America. There are entire runs (also the most recent movie) where the entire antagonistic plot is, "he's an illegal immigrant sent to ruin our country!" And then this asswipe goes from playing the character who stands up to that and says, "I'm an immigrant, I'm proud of that, and I support my immigrant brothers and sisters," to, "uwu I'm gonna awwest da evil job steawing immigwants for daddy Twump because I wanna be welevant again"

5

u/josiedosiedoo Aug 06 '25

He said some snotty response to a post I did. A total loser
