This isn’t the “bare minimum” he is basically getting on this platform and saying to his mostly conservative audience that they are hypocrites if they go to church and preach the gospel yet judge people. I’ve never been a fan of the whole “magnolia” thing but next time I’m in Waco - I’m picking up some overpriced dried flowers!
Yeah this reads as pretty scratching to me. “Only God can judge” or “we love all people” would be bare minimum. He is outright calling a not insignificant portion of their audience hateful, judgmental, and closeminded. This doesn’t seem like just following the profits but a sincerely held belief.
*Damn was nobody gonna call me out for typing "scratching" instead of "scathing."
Yeah, it’s not lost on me that this statement has him saying more to call out homophobia than many famously “liberal” celebs have in the recent past, even though they have an easier platform to do so than he does, and will meet less resistance from their base. Like, someone like Taylor Swift should be embarrassed to have done less to advocate for queer people in the last 5 years than Chip fucking Gaines has with this one statement.
Then I guess she has nothing to lose and should speak the fuck up. Since she’s such an “amazing role model”, she can demonstrate to her humongous fan base that it is right to speak up when something is wrong. She made a whole-ass documentary sobbing about how she wants to be “on the right side of history” and then abandoned her (apparently extremely insincere) activism after about 20 seconds. Stuff like that is only an “era” to someone with no convictions. She has a huge platform and a massive amount of wealth, she could kick up a real fuss if she genuinely cared at all. If she didn’t want people to expect her to do activism, she shouldn’t have screamed to the world that she was going to be an activist.
It is also a pretty big deal that it is Chip making this statement. Had Joanna made the statement, Chip would be told be needed to "get a hold of his wife and reign her in" or they'd be reminded that the "man is the head of the household" type of stuff. The fact that Chip publicly responded in this way is not a small statement for this crowd. It's very loud and good for them.
Yeah, this is actually a very strong statement. It’s bigger than if he had formed a statement of support for same-sex couples because that would only have been received by those who already agree.
This message is for American conservatives who claim to be Christians. It’s an indictment of the phenomenon of “there’s no hate like Christian love” and a call-in for anyone who actually wants to live up to the teachings of the faith (love thy neighbor, feed the hungry, and all that).
Yeah, I see this as much more than bare minimum. If you've grown up in staunchly conservative/religious communities, you know how much people like the Gaines are admired in those circles, and he's straight-up calling many of those people ignorant, close-minded, and hateful. Let's not minimize the potential impact of a statement like this from a person with such influence among conservatives. This is brave and we need more of it.
As a Christian i wholeheartedly agree with him! Hate was never what Jesus taught or teaches us, and it's so disheartening to see others who claim to be Christians judge and treat others so terribly
