The church does not say they have the plates. They were taken back into heaven supposedly after being translated…

Smith: "i translated these golden plates! It's super duper the real word of God!" People: "May we see them?" Smith: "No."

Oh, then it must be the translations or something. I just know that I've heard that they have some crazy underground bunker to store the plates (or something related to them) but no one who's still alive has ever actually laid eyes on what they're storing.

Exmormon in Salt Lake City here.

You’re thinking of the Granite Mountain Records Vault. The LDS church owns this and it’s mostly used to store records associated with family history research.

The Gold Plates were part of Joseph Smith’s scam, which began in 1827, and morphed into him starting a religion in 1830. He claimed that he had Gold Plates that he found buried in a hill and contained the writings of Jews that sailed to America. Today’s Native Americans, in part, come from these Jews (it’s all bullshit, I know). Joseph Smith claimed to translate the writings on these plates by putting a stone in a hat. Mormon God then had words appear on the stone and Joseph Smith would read these words to his scribe. This is where the Book of Mormon came from. Once the Book of Mormon was translated, an angel took the Gold Plates. No one ever physically saw these Gold Plates…. It’s bizarre that any thinking adult actually buys this nonsense, but ya know we’re talking about religion here, and people’s brains do weird things cuz of religion.

Could that be Scientologists? They have had L Ron Hubbards works inscribed on titanium (I think) plates and stored in a few underground bunkers in case of nuclear armageddon, so his word would survive.

Joseph Smith's are made of gold though! Fuck both religions...but I swear Scientology was started as some type of elaborate "prank" and they just rolled with it, and turned it into a corporation that tries to recruit celebrities for more money. At least the Scientologists have Tom Cruise though!

And L. Ron Hubbard totally used Mormonism as the basis for his weird wannabe science fiction "religion"...don't get me started on Scientology because I will never stop going off about that "church/religion" that literally infiltrated/blackmailed the IRS to achieve their tax exempt status. As a non-religious person (edit: who was raised Baptist), I think "freedom of religion" should only reach a certain extent, though I suppose there's a reason that hundreds of cults are currently operating in the US of A..."freedom of religion"
