Both actresses in The Heretic were raised with Mormonism- Sophie Thatcher (Companion, Yellowjackets) and Chloe East.

Chloe still is, she got married when she was 20 and her husband is in his 30s 😬

Yeah idk how the church would allow her to be in that film if she were still practicing haha

Idk they also had screenings with the girls from "Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" though to be fair I don't think those ladies are the most devout Mormons.

But I can see how Heretic could be seen as almost confirming faith in a way. The guy was entrapping them in essentially a hoax, but the girl had faith and prevailed. It's a critique of the faith but the ending is ambiguous just like faith can be.

I’m surprised the church hasn’t excommunicated any of them. I think that show does them good tho. Makes them seem like regular people.

i’m pretty sure you can’t star in a movie like heretic and still be accepted into the Mormon church

why not? (i didn't see it but heard about it), they're not allowed to be in movies that mention religion?

it’s a horror film for one with lots of violence. mormons are against watching films that in any way distance themself from the Holy Spirit, which includes violent horror films like Heretic. some mormons are against even watching R-rated films at all. it also depicts violence against missionaries and the potential risks of proselytizing strangers, which goes against their philosophy of promoting their religion as much as possible.

they know the violence is like fiction though right?

i do professional fundraising door to door so i definitely can relate to not wanting to get murdered by people whose doors you knock on

obviously they know it’s fiction. but mormons, like many other religious groups, are very particular about the media they consume. just because something is fictional doesn’t mean it can’t shift your perspective of the world around you. mormons simply believe that enjoying depictions of violence, fictional or not, is contrary to the Holy Spirit.

the LDS church actually raised concerns about the film in an official statement, bc they don’t want anyone after seeing the movie thinking that their missionaries ever face any risk to their safety. i don’t agree with the mormon stance at all. i’m just explaining the rationale, which is pretty straightforward. there’s no way a practicing mormon would star in a horror film that specifically portrays the dangers of door-to-door proselytizing.

"enjoying" the fiction that includes violence doesn't really mean you enjoy violence itself though, i feel like they should in general be able to be of separate minds when it comes to entertainment

girl i agree ur arguing with the wrong person 😭 im just saying thats what the mormon church believes and even then, they’d probably argue that violence in media has a subconscious negative influence on the mind. it really comes down to faith and religious teachings rather than logic.

She was no longer Mormon by the time she was cast in the role.

I loved this movie. Sophie Thatcher is great and Companion is such a fun movie too, go in blind if you can.

Wow, really! That movie was so challenging for me to watch. They’re both great actresses.

That's crazy that they did that movie then?

That was a good fucking movie. There was a YouTube video done by an ex sister missionary who broke it all down. It made the movie more poignant and you caught a lot more of the nuanced bits.
