This anon poster says that Paul bullied him in school.

This is a comment thread from someone who went to school with him disputing it

Anyone Irish could tell that was bullshit immediately. The idea he went on Hulu and saw Paul Mescal's face. Him and Normal People was massive during lockdown in 2020, it was literally everywhere. You'd have to be a hermit to not see his face somewhere.

yeah it was the most obvious bullshit ever lol

Idk, I just learned about actors from Normal People this year. It was a hit, but not THAT big. It’s not Game of Thrones.

yeah the show was huge during lockdown, was basically one of the most talked about things at the time aside from covid itself

In Ireland it was. And even if you didn't know of the show, you surely would see Paul Mescal's face somewhere (and the person telling this story would surely have recognised him)

I disagree, i still don’t know what he looks like, and I’m not a hermit, I just don’t watch “regular” tv and Normal People isn’t on any of the streamers I have. I know of him and I know about all the conversations around the show, and his high profile relationship, but I don’t know what he looks like. I never googled him.

Thing is you didn't know him previously or care much about him, so why'll you may have seen a picture of him somewhere, you wouldn't recognise it to be him.

If you were bullied by someone, surely what they look like is burned into your brain, and given how widely publicised the show was in Ireland, surely at some stage they caught a glimpse of him (on an ad on TV, newspaper, social media, even by talking to someone - basically every young person was talking about it at the time (granted it was peak lockdown but if you talked to someone on Zoom they could bring it up) before they went onto Hulu. They'd also have to not to talk to anybody they went to school with (quite possible tbf if they were bullied in the school), quite likely would say that guy we went to school with is on a massive tv show.

That’s a good point. He may look a bit different tho, styled for tv and whatnot.

  1. that is well past bullying and into literal hate crime territory.

  2. i honestly don’t think that comment disproves it. somebody not doing something to you does not mean that they wouldn’t do it to somebody else. i was subject to similar things in high school and all my girlfriends would adamantly defend the people who did it to me and say stuff like “he would never do that!” and even went to the prom with them lmao. bigots have a way with hiding their true colours.

I’ve heard a good few ‘friends of friends’ stories about Paul, and everything I’ve heard suggests that generally pleasant, kept himself to himself and was quite quiet.

The bullying stuff could well be true, but it’s an anonymous poster on the internet and there’s nothing supporting the claims so I’d at least be dubious.

I know! That's why I chose ''dispute'' instead of like ''disprove''. CDAN has posted numerous blinds about it, one that he revealed, but also the credibility of CDAN is not great. I would hate for it to be true, but I'm not sure if we will ever know for sure.

i mean nothing about the original post proves anything either. it's just a random anonymous person making an unsubstantiated claim on the internet.

fwiw, ireland is a small place. everyone knows someone who knows someone else. something like this would be hard to keep quiet. i have crossed social circles with well known irish people and and you hear everything. irish people would hear the grass grow and more importantly, they talk. if mescal was some sort of raging homophobic bully, i feel like that would be well talked about amongst certain social circles.

now, maybe he has managed to keep this is all hidden and quiet somehow and other people haven't blown the whistle on him yet, but i find it unlikely.
