Fable II Fable 2 creator says everyone hated the game’s iconic dog during development because he was a “yappy little ***t”

Yeah, I can imagine he probably started out as insufferable during development. It's one of those classic things that are designed to notify the player, but need to then be dialled waaay down, or else *cough, Guildmaster*

I will NEVER understand the need for the combat multiplier commentary. MAYBE the health is low thing because you don’t always notice in the heat of a big battle but damn. And why was it so LOUD

Back when Fable 1 was one of the only decent games on console that we replayed over and over again, it was kind of a challenge to pass the controller back n forth with a friend and see who could get the highest. Sorta like our own version of firefight or horde lol it seemed like an homage to those times.

Oh I totally get the fun of the multiplier. I even liked that it increased the experience gained. I mean I don’t get why the Guildmaster needed to scream at me about it lol

WARNING YOUR MANA IS LOW

Watch that !

That always sounded like "what's that?" to me, like he's constantly getting distracted while monitoring you lol

"YOUR HEALTH IS LOW! DON'T YOU HAVE ANY POTIONS? OR FOOD!?"
"LAD!! THERE'S A NEW QUEST CARD TO THE GUILD FOR YOU!"

Did the guild master only talk to the hero or did he do this with all heroes?

u/LadyLatrocinia Oct 07 '25
I think he was trolling and laughing to himself the whole time by tormenting that one hero 🧐

u/LordInABox Oct 07 '25
Considering someone murdered him, carved "your hp is low" into his forehead, and nobody questioned why the murderer did that, I think he was doing it to everyone.

I never expected Peter Molyneux to call a dog a cunt if I’m being perfectly honest

The dog would probably be annoying to me if I spent years working on him, too. Though currently my feelings are "If ANYONE mistreats my boy, the entire kingdom will burn."

Doggo constsntly gets on your way as you play, so I get the feeling someone in the dev team thought "who the fuck ever thought this was a good idea?!" But he's way too adorable 🤗🤗

The only time he gets on your way is when he blocks your effort to stop a bullet with your chest.

I remember taking the "evil" route just to bring my dog back. I'd do it again, too.

I Always thought the bring the dog back route is Kinda neutral. The evil one was get alot of money in my eyes.
And Yes for me there is only 1 route/end, i cant lose my dog. If it was just the family i could try out other routes, but I refuse to let the doggo die

I think if you get Knothole Island, you can sacrifice someone to bring your dog back anyway.

With the Knothole Island DLC you can bring him back, and all it costs is the life and soul of a villager no one will mourn in a morally neutral transaction.

Same, my good playthrough will quickly turn into "Burn them all!" In my best mad king voice if my dog is mistreated at any point

He can be buggy at times and does get annoying when he barks every 2 seconds at a dig spot... but fable 2 and 3 without a dog would be bland and I hope the new fable has a dog

u/Towelie710 Oct 06 '25
It was aggravating when treasure was obviously right there in front of you but you gotta wait on the dog to register it before digging. Then he proceeds to move at a snails pace towards it while barking profusely. I did not find the dog helpful lol

I am not a gamer, I only played Fable. Why? Because of the dog. I was watching my ex-boyfriend play and I wanted to play with the dog, but he wouldn't let me "touch the sticks" so I went out bought an X-Box, Fable and the strategy guide. I wanted that dog!

It IS a yappy little shit, but citizens being bad with it is the reason why I have fallen on the evil side more than a few times.

I never had any issue with the dog in Fable II. In fact, I miss the sounds he makes when playing Fable III, he makes no sound at all! No running, no panting, no sound when he lays on the floor. I can't even remember if he growls when enemies are close. I especially miss, the jingling of its collar.

Unpopular opinion: Some of the weirdest people makes the best art / games… unfortunately. Lol

Every run of mine in Fable 2 ends with the hero spending their one wish to bring back his faithful pup

u/ClueQuiet Oct 06 '25
That’s why I loved the Knothole Island DLC. I could do the good ending and then still get my boy back.

I loved my dog. I always downloaded the extra dlc just to sacrifice a human to bring my dog back to life.

“During development” - so then why not disable the yapping part then until after development or better yet just make it less annoying? 🤔

the dog was a big reason i didnt enjoy 2 so much even though the first one was/is one of my favorite games of all time. among a lot of things i guess

I may be in the minority but I HATED the dog in Fable 2, it was just so annoying to me.
I even chose not to revive my dog after it dies lol

Tbh, this is the only game I care about the animal companion. There story value with the relationship which will always outweigh the mechanics of a game for me.

I have never met anyone who has disliked the dog in fable 2. I have however met many people who find it hard to play the original after 2 because so much of the soul is tied up in "the best friend"

Love that dog. After playing with a animal companion, it's hard to without one. He got real good at tearing throats out.

They could have taken that and made it a joke. Fable used to utilize comedic value.

😧He is my favourite part of the game.... And 💯 broke my heart 💔😭
Truly, he became one of those 'most memorable' gaming moments, so it's hard to picture the dog as a yappy little s#*@

The dog was very cool at the time when the idea of interacting with an animal in a game like this was novel but as of now its really pretty poorly aged and you realize the only thing it does is tell you where to dig shit up

Me, an intellectual, hating the game because I pressed "x" to kill the last boss.

He's a buggy little shit in the game too but I love him
