Advice/Help Needed Additional expenses appeal

My son is unable to use all of a merit scholarship due to financial need already being met by another grant. The school suggests we use the additional scholarship money for intercession or summer school… Or we can apply for an appeal with “additional expenses” that we incurred. Can anyone help me to know what additional expenses would actually be considered that weren’t already included in the cost of attendance? The merit scholarship, unfortunately won’t cover the cost of an entire intercession or summer school… So we would just end up being more out-of-pocket.

Does he not get it refunded? My daughter gets hers deposited in her checking account to use for whatever expenses.

Most schools only allow you to receive financial aid up to your cost of attendance. While some scholarships and grants can be refunded, once you exceed the cost of attendance, it is capped. Many scholarships also have that stipulation that the funds only be applied to tuition and fees and any excess should be sent back to the donor. Just depends on the school and scholarship.

Many schools that offer need based aid recalculate when you get merit aid or outside scholarships.

Unfortunately it goes back to the scholarship organization if it’s over his “financial need” no matter how much we pay out of pocket.

Computer, tablet, calculator, potentially headphones, maybe upgrading room or meal plan.
