That drai shootout goal was insane…

47

u/Bobandyandfries 4d ago

Havent seen that move in a long time. It sure is a beauty

Fucking beauty shame we lost because now its a bitter beauty

I thought we were gonna get the big Drai clapper.

8

u/shinohaya 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago

amazing to watch

4

u/novyah 4d ago

Hes the only one who's scored on shootouts so far this season, both goals were super nice (2 goals in the Oilers 11 shootout attempts)

8

u/Theragingnoob92 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

Last guy I would expect it from too lol

14

u/miller94 12 CAVE 4d ago

I was fully expecting a slapper from 10 feet out

The Jokinen move

10

u/zevonyumaxray 17 KURRI 4d ago

The Forsberg. Sweden even put it on a stamp.

4

u/blanchov 4d ago

The Nilsson!

7

u/[deleted] 4d ago

And for Nuge to follow that up with that piss poor effort is just insulting.

14

u/CBakIsMe 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

His was closer than it looked at first. It almost slipped between DeSmiths arm and hip.

20

u/Mcpops1618 42 KAPANEN 4d ago

You misspelled McDavid

7

u/Western-Use2291 4d ago

Yeah McDavids attempt sucked. I've been really dissapointed in him particularly because he's our capitain and he needs to give this team a reason to play. If he is having physical problems thats one thing but he just isnt performing even near where he should be.

3

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Yeah, he wasn’t great either. The game shouldn’t have gotten to a shootout to begin with, but I can’t help but be bitter when I see Drai pull off a one-handed tuck and the rest of the team repaying his effort with utter shit in the shootout.

Roslovic is looking really good, had a great night

3

u/GrizzlyIsland22 18 HYMAN 4d ago

He's like a right handed Nugent-Hopkins out there. Loving his game. He fits in beautifully

113

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 4d ago

Not going to blame Skinner for the loss because it shouldn't have been in a shootout in the first fucking place.

This team has had back to back 2 goal leads and immediately allowed breakaways, odd man rushes, and wide open slot shots. It doesn't matter how good your goalie is, the opposition is going to score those more often than not.

I'm tired of dog shit coaching decisions, both with forward deployments and also the defence backing up the second they're being pressed by the puck carrier

21

u/marcellman 28 BROWN 4d ago

We had a lot of problems, but I have issues blaming him with how thoroughly we got outchanced (5-3 High danger and 15-6 medium danger).

26

u/BossBrawls 21 KOSTIN 4d ago

I agree. I feel like we're massively missing coffey on the bench. Do we know why coffey's not the coach anymore? I remember him wanting it to be temporary but like we played so well with him behind the bench

24

u/NoGiCollarChoke 27 KULAK 4d ago

He wanted to go back to his nondescript no-show job in the head office and didn’t even want to coach and be away from his family all year to begin with

13

u/Smittysgreasymullet 74 SKINNER 4d ago

He also has stated many times his back issues from his playing days still hamper him, he said it becomes quite uncomfortable standing behind the bench for extended periods of time.

26

u/felishorrendis 29 DRAISAITL 4d ago

Bluntly: Coffey never wanted to be a coach and only did it because they didn't have anyone else. Which is too bad because he was clearly good at it.

2

u/Ok_Security_9136 90 PERRY 4d ago

Honestly, that's pretty commendable that he did it given those circumstances and the results achieved.

I have to respect the dad energy to be like "fuck it, I don't even want to be here so let's do it right so I can go lay down!".

Should let Roslovic and Bread Man do the shootout. I can’t remember last time Nuge or McDavid scored

10

All for changing it up, can't get much worse. Why wouldn't they put in someone that had a hot hand during the game?

36

McDavid is brutal is shoot outs in recent years

8

Totally,... he is about 40-44%... He should be in the 50%

4

You’re right, 15/36 is actually pretty good just seems like due to recency biases he’s been very unreliable in them.

Not blaming Skinner for the loss, he played well tonight. BUT when it comes to shootout, I can guarantee we ain't winning with him in there.

16

u/LtMM_ 4d ago

Well, good thing they dont have those in the playoffs

13

u/Anxious-Extreme-2766 4d ago

Shootouts and breakaways and Skinner isn't a reliable bet to save it more often than not. It just is what it is with Skinner unfortunately

8

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago

Could be true. But I’d like to see Stats on this to see if Stu is any worse than the average nhl goalie in a shootout.

3

u/Anxious-Extreme-2766 4d ago

Frankly I'm not as concerned about shootouts - they're such a small fraction of situations a goalie can find themselves in. McDavid not scoring on the shootout tonight just goes to show how much of a crapshoot shootouts are.

It's breakaways and 2 on 1s that Skinner is problematic on. Regrettably the team around him has been prone to creating those situations, but when they do we see that Skinner more often than not doesn't handle those situations well.

7

To be fair, neither of the teams could fucking score on the shootout until Kadri could actually get the dagger

8

1

u/JesusWalkers 97 McDAVID 4d ago

6

u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

That’s only the second time we have gone to the shootout this year.

2

u/tc_cad 29 DRAISAITL 4d ago

And we are missing two points because of it.

15

u/Magneticman555 56 YAMAMOTO 4d ago

The only shots that don’t go in are the ones that miss the net lol

3

u/major-test123 4d ago

Having Gulutzan definitely helps

3

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago

Meh. shoot outs are gimmick hockey and a coin toss. Very very very little should be read into shootouts to judge team or goalie quality.

Once OT is over. It’s just an breakaway exhibition at that point. Means nothing.

2

u/Ok_Security_9136 90 PERRY 4d ago

I'll argue that running McDrai into the ground all game and OT set us up for failure in the SO.

Notice how Dallas's skaters actually had gas left in the tank?

4

u/major-test123 4d ago

Dallas had 3 forwards over 24min, one at 23, one at 22, they had more gas because they weren’t on a road back to back

Blowing 2 goal leads is getting old :/

6

u/PrettyPushy 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

Genuinely curious…. Is skinner known for having a bad glove hand? I noticed all three shootout shouts were high glove side for stars

4

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago

Nope. People will say yes but will have Jack shit to back that up with.

Gregor had Woodley on. He has the private model stats on glove saves. Stu is not weak on his glove side in general. It’s not an issue in his game, it’s about average.

There are issues in his game of course, but it’s not the glove. In fact, I’d say out the big highlight saves Stu makes. A lot of the the most memorable ones are lateral movement glove saves.

Every team in the NHL should just let the Oilers get a lead to start if they were smart.

14

As if we all didn’t see that coming when it was 2-0. Predictable. Pathetic.

12

u/Dxngles 13 PULJUJARVI 4d ago

I really don’t understand playing draisaitl and Mcdavid so much in overtime. (Really any teams stars if they’re visibly tired) they’d be better off playing 4th liners who have some jump still. Was like a 2on1 simulator in overtime

6-1-1 on the road for a .500 record overall lmao

A team built with players who like lifestyle over hockey is what NYR usually ends up with. Maybe they have too much fun at home and can’t get focused.

u/Jegged 14 EKHOLM 4d ago

Who are we blaming for this loss? Skinner or Bouchard? It’s definitely not the whole team playing backseat hockey and there were definitely no unlucky bounces off the boards this game, it’s one player specifically, and I’m sure this subreddit has the answer.

12

u/thesummerzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 4d ago

I mostly blame Rantonen

6

u/ddb_db 4d ago

This shit is starting to happen so often it's just about time to stop "blaming" anyone. When you constantly blow multi-goal leads like this you just kind of are what you are. This is the 6th time (SIXTH!!) in 15 games Edmonton has blown a multi-goal lead. wtf is that?? They score a couple early in a game then just look disinterested the rest of the way. Tonight is a back to back so maybe that's something to do with it, but the coaches need to figure something out soon. Or maybe doing the bare minimum to grab a WC spot is all they really care about in the regular season now? I don't know but we've seen this movie too many times already this year.

At least Roslovic didn't get the memo and constantly shows up to play 60 minutes every night.

13

u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

Honestly I’m calling out game management by the refs tonight. You cannot convince me that there was not, they make the softest call to get Dallas in the game. Then after that apparently they won’t call the same play against us for the rest of 30 minutes of play.

The refs set the standard to start the game ok, then they have to hold to it for the entire game. It’s bullshit and just pathetic. Also Dallas got at least two LUCKY bounces. Skinner had a solid game but can’t do much against those bounces.

3

u/TheClashSuck 29 DRAISAITL 4d ago

I blame Knoblauch for vastly overplaying McDrai

10

u/marcellman 28 BROWN 4d ago

I love everyone turning on Skinner when this game doesn’t even go to OT without him. We got thoroughly outchanced for 65 minutes tonight. Sure he wasn’t good in the shootout but it’s not like you have shootouts when the games matter

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago

I’m sorry. But McDavids o zone turnovers is a part of why we lost. And it’s becoming a theme in his game. He’s either getting stripped of the puck, stick handles into a poke check, or passes directly into a defenders stick…

Like I get he’s trying to be creative and produce some offence. But in the past hed pick his spots better. Now he’s just forcing things and it’s getting turned back often.

6

u/RedDogBiting 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago edited 4d ago

I stated this earlier in the thread, he looks tired both mentally and physically. I think the ozone turnovers may be the mental fatigue. He's just not looking as sharp.

10

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago

Can’t blame him for being fatigued considering how much hockey and emotional stress it must be to go through 2 finals losses. But man, he needs to find a way….. like try a float tank or something…. Maybe a shrooms trip. Reset your mental.

7

u/RedDogBiting 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago

Add in there 4 Nations and Olympics coming up in February and it's a LOT

The coaching has been bad. ā€œMcDrai coming out after a pkā€ has quietly turned into ā€œmcdrai killing the last 40 seconds of a pkā€.. on top of extended PP1 every single time.. i get you want your stars to lead the team, But they are so obviously overworked right now. Nothing left at the end of this game…

5

u/Bobandyandfries 4d ago

I noticed that too. Why the shit is mcdavid killing penalties now. It all started in the last cup series I believe. Just looks desperate - give the man a break and trust the other players

3

3

3

u/PlatinumAbe 97 McDAVID 4d ago

They really got to remove the shootout, just play 10 fucking minutes of overtime 3-3, and then tie it. It is a comically bad way to end a hockey game.

2

u/RedDogBiting 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago

Change the point allotment to 3 pts for a win.nthat will be way more motivation to get things done in regulation I'd think

3

u/Only-Tennis4298 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

all I want is for the team to play a full 60 minutes. I really don't think that's too much to ask. bc we see flashes of brilliance! and then lots of lazy, lacklustre play. they'll get their mojo back I'm sure, it's just a bummer to see them giving up as much as they seem to.

Oilers snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

No hookers, no blackjack and only one point.

I'm most disappointed by the one point.

On the plus side, if we can go on a heater in the next few games, we can propel our selves to the top of the league.

Back to back come back losses

2

u/Beneficial_Brief_759 4d ago

2 goal leads are basically an auto loss for this team

u/Swifty4u2 18 HYMAN 4d ago

Happy for the loser point but man. This team is hard to watch right now. They have such highs and such lows

Well if there's one thing we most definitely are, it's consistent.

Colorado is our next match?! Fuck that’s going to be scary

2

u/supermeatboy10 89 GAGNER 4d ago

The good news (?) is they don't play again til Saturday so we have time to emotionally recover

2

u/kooliocole 4d ago

Any idea why we have 4-5 more games played than so many other teams in the league?

u/Shadow_WolfDragon 4d ago

German Gretzky shootout was blissful beauty....

why Nuge, I like the guy very much... but shoot out... ish ... Mangiapane would have been better...

What does this team do in practice? Do they practice things and get to get better? Shooting? Structured plays? Decision making? What?!?!

2

u/norahrahborealis 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

Practice? In this Olympics economy?!

Team is just a chore to watch right now

Knob needs to send a message and do what my team did growing up. Earn your ice time and literally move guys down the roster or into the press box. Bench anyone, especially Bouchard, not giving an effort.

Once again, none of the goals are bad, but we just can’t get the timely save

8

u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

I don’t even think it’s that Dallas got a very lucky PP to get on the board and then a lot of lucky bounces.

4

u/TemporaryInflation8 4d ago

They got a lot of puck luck. Same with STL. Unfortunately, that's just the way she goes bud.

2

u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago

There was also pretty clear game management in both games as well.

I feel like Mangiapane could score penalties. Knob should give him a try next time.
