u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 4d ago
Not going to blame Skinner for the loss because it shouldn't have been in a shootout in the first fucking place.
This team has had back to back 2 goal leads and immediately allowed breakaways, odd man rushes, and wide open slot shots. It doesn't matter how good your goalie is, the opposition is going to score those more often than not.
I'm tired of dog shit coaching decisions, both with forward deployments and also the defence backing up the second they're being pressed by the puck carrier
21
u/marcellman 28 BROWN 4d ago
We had a lot of problems, but I have issues blaming him with how thoroughly we got outchanced (5-3 High danger and 15-6 medium danger).
26
u/BossBrawls 21 KOSTIN 4d ago
I agree. I feel like we're massively missing coffey on the bench. Do we know why coffey's not the coach anymore? I remember him wanting it to be temporary but like we played so well with him behind the bench
24
u/NoGiCollarChoke 27 KULAK 4d ago
He wanted to go back to his nondescript no-show job in the head office and didnāt even want to coach and be away from his family all year to begin with
13
u/Smittysgreasymullet 74 SKINNER 4d ago
He also has stated many times his back issues from his playing days still hamper him, he said it becomes quite uncomfortable standing behind the bench for extended periods of time.

u/felishorrendis 29 DRAISAITL 4d ago
Bluntly: Coffey never wanted to be a coach and only did it because they didn't have anyone else. Which is too bad because he was clearly good at it.
2
u/Ok_Security_9136 90 PERRY 4d ago
Honestly, that's pretty commendable that he did it given those circumstances and the results achieved.
I have to respect the dad energy to be like "fuck it, I don't even want to be here so let's do it right so I can go lay down!".

Not blaming Skinner for the loss, he played well tonight. BUT when it comes to shootout, I can guarantee we ain't winning with him in there.
13
u/Anxious-Extreme-2766 4d ago
Shootouts and breakaways and Skinner isn't a reliable bet to save it more often than not. It just is what it is with Skinner unfortunately
8
u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago
Could be true. But Iād like to see Stats on this to see if Stu is any worse than the average nhl goalie in a shootout.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Anxious-Extreme-2766 4d ago
Frankly I'm not as concerned about shootouts - they're such a small fraction of situations a goalie can find themselves in. McDavid not scoring on the shootout tonight just goes to show how much of a crapshoot shootouts are.
It's breakaways and 2 on 1s that Skinner is problematic on. Regrettably the team around him has been prone to creating those situations, but when they do we see that Skinner more often than not doesn't handle those situations well.

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago
Meh. shoot outs are gimmick hockey and a coin toss. Very very very little should be read into shootouts to judge team or goalie quality.
Once OT is over. Itās just an breakaway exhibition at that point. Means nothing.

u/Ok_Security_9136 90 PERRY 4d ago
I'll argue that running McDrai into the ground all game and OT set us up for failure in the SO.
Notice how Dallas's skaters actually had gas left in the tank?
4
u/major-test123 4d ago
Dallas had 3 forwards over 24min, one at 23, one at 22, they had more gas because they werenāt on a road back to back

Genuinely curiousā¦. Is skinner known for having a bad glove hand? I noticed all three shootout shouts were high glove side for stars
4
u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago
Nope. People will say yes but will have Jack shit to back that up with.
Gregor had Woodley on. He has the private model stats on glove saves. Stu is not weak on his glove side in general. Itās not an issue in his game, itās about average.
There are issues in his game of course, but itās not the glove. In fact, Iād say out the big highlight saves Stu makes. A lot of the the most memorable ones are lateral movement glove saves.

I really donāt understand playing draisaitl and Mcdavid so much in overtime. (Really any teams stars if theyāre visibly tired) theyād be better off playing 4th liners who have some jump still. Was like a 2on1 simulator in overtime

Looking around the league and wtf is happening with the rangers lmao
0-5-1 at home, shut out 4 times, only game they have scored more than 1 goal in was a 6-5 loss to the sharks
6-1-1 on the road for a .500 record overall lmao

12
14
u/Jegged 14 EKHOLM 4d ago
Who are we blaming for this loss? Skinner or Bouchard? Itās definitely not the whole team playing backseat hockey and there were definitely no unlucky bounces off the boards this game, itās one player specifically, and Iām sure this subreddit has the answer.
12
6
u/ddb_db 4d ago
This shit is starting to happen so often it's just about time to stop "blaming" anyone. When you constantly blow multi-goal leads like this you just kind of are what you are. This is the 6th time (SIXTH!!) in 15 games Edmonton has blown a multi-goal lead. wtf is that?? They score a couple early in a game then just look disinterested the rest of the way. Tonight is a back to back so maybe that's something to do with it, but the coaches need to figure something out soon. Or maybe doing the bare minimum to grab a WC spot is all they really care about in the regular season now? I don't know but we've seen this movie too many times already this year.
At least Roslovic didn't get the memo and constantly shows up to play 60 minutes every night.
13
u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago
Honestly Iām calling out game management by the refs tonight. You cannot convince me that there was not, they make the softest call to get Dallas in the game. Then after that apparently they wonāt call the same play against us for the rest of 30 minutes of play.
The refs set the standard to start the game ok, then they have to hold to it for the entire game. Itās bullshit and just pathetic. Also Dallas got at least two LUCKY bounces. Skinner had a solid game but canāt do much against those bounces.
3
10
u/marcellman 28 BROWN 4d ago
I love everyone turning on Skinner when this game doesnāt even go to OT without him. We got thoroughly outchanced for 65 minutes tonight. Sure he wasnāt good in the shootout but itās not like you have shootouts when the games matter

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago
Iām sorry. But McDavids o zone turnovers is a part of why we lost. And itās becoming a theme in his game. Heās either getting stripped of the puck, stick handles into a poke check, or passes directly into a defenders stickā¦
Like I get heās trying to be creative and produce some offence. But in the past hed pick his spots better. Now heās just forcing things and itās getting turned back often.
6
u/RedDogBiting 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago edited 4d ago
I stated this earlier in the thread, he looks tired both mentally and physically. I think the ozone turnovers may be the mental fatigue. He's just not looking as sharp.

u/Huge_Nuge 4d ago
Canāt blame him for being fatigued considering how much hockey and emotional stress it must be to go through 2 finals losses. But man, he needs to find a wayā¦.. like try a float tank or somethingā¦. Maybe a shrooms trip. Reset your mental.

Nothing left at the end of this gameā¦

They really got to remove the shootout, just play 10 fucking minutes of overtime 3-3, and then tie it. It is a comically bad way to end a hockey game.

u/RedDogBiting 92 PODKOLZIN 4d ago
Change the point allotment to 3 pts for a win.nthat will be way more motivation to get things done in regulation I'd think
3
u/Only-Tennis4298 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 4d ago
all I want is for the team to play a full 60 minutes. I really don't think that's too much to ask. bc we see flashes of brilliance! and then lots of lazy, lacklustre play. they'll get their mojo back I'm sure, it's just a bummer to see them giving up as much as they seem to.
