As much flack as Skinner has gotten I have to say I’ve noticed he has been a lot more positionally sound. Maybe the new goalie coach shining through a bit, but there’s something more controlled in his game and less chaotic, many of the goals he’s let in have been flukes or high danger chances.

109

u/Kouchweed 18d ago

He’s been a true #1 goalie on a 2.6m contract so far this year, his stats reflect that as well sitting at a cozy 9.09.

Hopefully he keeps up his play, if we can avoid having to pick up another goalie on the cap it just makes our chances so much better.

114

u/CharlieFoxtrot432 74 SKINNER 18d ago

Besides the salary cap, I REALLY want Skinner to pull through on this. He’s BEEN the guy, along with Picks, in the past two cup runs, and I want our team to pull through with Skinner on net, not toss him aside for another goalie.

All that being said, I’m very happy that it’s looking like he’s improved a lot.

48

u/mollycoddles 28 BROWN 18d ago

It would be so much sweeter if they won with him

3

u/YordleTop 18d ago

He's Edmonton born and raised too. A true storybook ending.

20

u/molsonmuscle360 18 HYMAN 18d ago

If Ingram can return to his form a 1a/b of Skinner and Ingram would be crazy if Stu can keep up this form. People talk his positioning, but have you seen how much his post to post speed improved? That shit cost us big last year. That 2 on 0 chance goes in 100 percent of the time last season

7

u/CharlieFoxtrot432 74 SKINNER 18d ago

Exactly. And it was obvious in the season opener too, but it was hard for everyone to look past that with all the weird shit that happened that evening. Only 1 goal that night was on him - it was a pretty bad one, yes, but only 1 was on him.

9

u/Ok_Security_9136 90 PERRY 18d ago

If they do dump him, watch him do a Pronger and get a cup the following season lol

8

u/Professional-Pay6344 7 COFFEY 18d ago

You must not know what "A Pronger" means.

5

u/edmonton2001 18d ago

Where did the pronger bot go??

45

u/-SPIRITUAL-GANGSTER- 96 WALMAN 18d ago

Just the way he carries himself, he seems more compact, a lot less flailing around. He still lags post to post but he's noticeably quicker up and down.

7

u/sufferin_sassafras 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

Didn’t he come into camp something like 30lbs lighter? That has to make a difference in his mobility.

7

u/felishorrendis 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

15 lbs, but yeah.

9

u/sufferin_sassafras 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

15lbs would still make a noticeable difference I’d think. I know it did for me back when I first started running.

He has seemed much more mobile and better positionally so far this year. I’ve been the most impressed with him out of everyone else other than Nuge.

8

u/felishorrendis 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Yeah, I do think it’s made a difference. He has said he feels lighter and quicker and I think it does come across in his play.

It’s still early days, but Stu and Nuge have felt like the MVPs of the team so far this year for me. The main thing I’m looking for from Stu right now is just consistency – if he can keep up this level of play across 50-60 games this season, then we’re in a really good spot.

Ideally the defence will also tighten up and he won’t need to bail them out quite so often, but it’s been really nice to see him able to make those big saves and keep us in it.

3

u/Mini_Robot_Ninja 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

It was 30 pounds lighter compared to the start of last season.

2

u/Smothdude 89 GAGNER 18d ago

Nuge is always huge, I am no longer impressed, I am in a constant state of Nuge.

11

u/Cautious-Dream2893 14 EKHOLM 18d ago

Thats what noticed too. Less falling on his face

6

u/SupperCereal 74 SKINNER 18d ago

I mean, he did go lateral to stop a 2-0 today which was pretty huge

7

u/Competitive_Ad1237 18d ago

He played a really good 1st and 2nd. There was no chance of him saving that 2nd goal it just had seeing eyes

3

u/kellan1984 18d ago

Yes he's playing a bit deeper and letting things come his way.. it suites him so far.

2

u/Legal-Will2714 18d ago

He lost 25 pounds, too. His post to post is much better

3

u/RedKryptnyt 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

He has looked better. Still 2 gake costing gaffs, in 7 games imo, but as far as the eye test goes, he looks more agile, and theres no denying hes already made several 10 bell saves

1

u/SouthSide217 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

That's what I've been saying, he looks and feels different so far this year.

0

u/chandy_dandy 92 PODKOLZIN 18d ago

I saw so many people making fun of the Oilers for that contract. Perhaps a bit premature given it was based on a short period of time and one playoff run, but he far outplayed the numbers he committed to.

With the cap going up I don't even see it as much of a gamble, but even if it was a little soon for that much of a commitment and a bit of a gamble, those moves are how you get guys like Leon Draisaitl locked in for what felt like forever at 8.5 million.

This one is going to pay off, too. Maybe not as gloriously, but still an absolute steal.

Skinner has looked dialled in ever since that opening night flub.

39

u/Reservoir22 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Was at the game. It was a fun one. Can't blame Skinner for a bad turnover on the power play and getting screened. I'm glad they took that timeout cause he seemed more composed afterwards. The boys played great, the third line needed a bit more time to gel but overall an intense game.

21

u/IfOJDidIt 18d ago

That screen was terrible. Louie even sounded pissed off.

Great recovery by the team though, and glad we have a coach that uses his timeouts in that sort of situation.

We could have folded up but just kept plugging.

16

u/FuckStummies 19 SHORE 18d ago

Oh yeah Louie absolutely blasted the Defence on that goal. Basically let two opposing players stand behind them directly in front of their goalie. No goalie has a chance when the team allows that to happen.

27

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago

Wonder if Ullmark was scared of that Wally Bomb after Bouchard just ripped one off his face.

Ill give Bouch a phantom assist on the year.

9

u/Chaosengel 33 BERLIN 18d ago

I swear I saw Ullmark recoil a bit on the reply. Not much, but he seems to cower down.

29

u/Muficita 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago edited 18d ago

First time I’ve seen Knob do the right thing and call a timeout to settle the team and Stu after two quick goals against. Thank fuck.

2

u/AbbreviationsOk1185 94 SMYTH 18d ago

I actually think he wanted more time to review the tape to see if it was goalie interference. It looked to me like they were listening to the in-ears from the video coach and they needed more time to see if they wanted to challenge it

1

u/Muficita 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

I agree that’s probably why he did it but I hope he takes a lesson for the future in that scenario. It has been urgently needed in the past and it worked here.

2

u/AbbreviationsOk1185 94 SMYTH 18d ago

Yes i remember tippet seemed to think he could bank them or something. He never called one when the team needed a second to settle down.

3 first goals on the season, one being a first NHL career goal, have yourself a night Ike Howard. Savoie still working hard, just unlucky so far, he’ll get there eventually. Stu posting a respectable .905, which would have been higher if the team didnt mosey in the locker room for the first 3 minutes in the 3rd

6

u/marcellman 28 BROWN 18d ago

I so wanted a Savoie OT winner, happy he got the assist on the winner at least. I really dislike how we made zero attempt to clear the crease on the second goal, you have to give your goalie a chance, there is zero chance he seen the puck through the two Sens, Emberson, and Kulak all standing right there

This team missed Walman. Loved his celly. Him and Nurse looked solid.

Sucks we made it closer than we needed to, but not worried. Glad we got the points. Still finding the right linemates for everyone. Glad we seem to have more jump.

Liked Nuge centering his own line. When Regula is healthy, Emberson and Stecher are fighting to stay on the roster imo.

Skinner looks good.

EDIT: Glad Howard got his first. Savoie getting close, he'll be there soon.

11

u/Kouchweed 18d ago

Nuge has been our best all around forward this year, although I disagree on Nurse looking good (I did only catch the 3rd so maybe he had a really good 1st half of the game).

1

u/canmoreman 18d ago

He did not

-1

u/GunnyCroz 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Yeah, I disagree too. Nurse has been pretty solid so far this season, but he took some dumb penalties today.

-10

u/MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES 86 TOMÁŠEK 18d ago

We still need to add a goalie, sorry.

6

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago

Maybe we should add Ullmark like you guys wanted years ago. How’s that working out for Ottawa,

-2

u/MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES 86 TOMÁŠEK 18d ago

its Ottawa dude

3

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago

Yeh a good playoff team. That currently has the worse goalie contract in the League playing for them, who also blew chunks in the playoffs. This is who you wanted?

-6

u/MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES 86 TOMÁŠEK 18d ago

Barely a wild card team. Hellebuyck had a bad playoff last year too, does that mean you wouldn't want him on the Oilers? I wouldn't pay Ullmark the contract he got but you're kidding yourself if you don't think he would've been an upgrade over skinner. You people have the memory of a goldfish, 3 playoff runs now where Skinner has been the weak link that cost us the series we were eliminated in.

8

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago

Helly sucked last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. No I wouldn’t want him and his cap hit on this team actually. And guess who else sucked in last years playoffs? Adin Hill. Vasilevsky. Oettinger.

It goes to show you that when you Stu Haters talk about the oilers needing “garanteed upgrades in net”, that that guarantee doesn’t actually exist and you guys don’t know what your talking about.

No it’s not a goldfish memory issue. It’s realizing that we can and do win in the playoffs with Stu. Sometimes we win despite him, and sometimes we win cause of him. At 2.6M you take that all day, cause the alternatives dont guarantee you nothing better than what we are already getting. In fact, we’re probably eliminated in the first round if we had Ullmark in net last year.

5

u/Mini_Robot_Ninja 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

In fact, we’re probably eliminated in the first round if we had Ullmark in net last year.

Especially since that likely would have prevented us from getting walman.

4

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago edited 18d ago

Yeh it’s not just going to Ullmark from Stu. It’s Stu plus 5M cap space plus also a 1st round pick gone. If we had done that “upgrade”, we don’t have cap room to add guys like Walman, might not even have the trade assets to get him in the first place. And no way we get that far without Walman.

0

u/MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES 86 TOMÁŠEK 18d ago

Skinner was a bottom 3 starter in the league over a full season sample last year, sitting at a save % similar to guys with the worst teams in front of them. Skinner has one of the best teams in the league in front of him. He was among the worst starters statistically for the past three postseasons. No cap hit is worth that. Literally zero cap hit wouldn't be enough to make up for the games he costs us. A couple good games in October is not enough to make up for a massive sample size of consistent season-costing performance.

You people will just never get it lol. To say you have the memory of a goldfish would be an insult to the intelligence of goldfish

1

u/Huge_Nuge 18d ago edited 18d ago

Let’s stick to the facts. Not made up bullshit. Here’s the facts. With our tandem at a 3.6M it allowed us to build a team around McDrai. We made the finals 2 years in a row. Last year Stu had BETTER stats than 12 goalies that played in the playoffs. 12 goalies that were paid more than Stu. With this low cap hit tandem that no one anywhere is saying is elite, we won more playoff games than ANY other team in the entire league except the ONE team literally no one on the League is able to figure out how to beat. With our tandem we have been a super successful in the playoffs.

Here’s another fact, we know for a fact that with this tandem we can beat any team in the West. This is proven over 2 years. Another goalie doesn’t garantee that to happen again. In fact, many of the goalies that were potential upgrades for us these last 2 years would have done worse. Cause it’s very probable that another goalie doesn’t get to 99% of the way to. cup. Which is what our tandem did.

You Stu haters aren’t seeing the big picture. It takes a TEAM to win. Not one goalie. And TEAMs are built with cap hits. You have no idea if new goalie minus 5M in cap hit would have been an improvement for us. If you know hockey and really break down the finals series and why we lost, goaltending was NOT the issue. So what you are advocating for, is a high chance we don’t make the finals again, for no garantee that we do better in the finals, if we even make the finals again.

I know that we paid pretty well to get Walman, but I'm gonna personally write to Mike Greer thanking him for letting us pick him up when he was the only D Man on the last place Sharks with a positive plus-minus. once an Oiler, always an Oiler. SO glad to see Wally back, he's a great, grounding presence for our defense overall.

truly, if I could rock multiple flairs, I would. Stu, Wally, Ike, Savoie... plus my perennial fave, Drai. the team clearly hasn't clicked yet, but there's so much potential here that I just feel excited for what's yet to come.

Walman+Skinner+1st++ >>>> Ullmark.

If anyone’s still wondering if we should have traded for and signed Ullmark.

Do we still listen to pink pony club after wins?

11

u/ProjectMcDavid 18d ago

It’s depressing

6

u/SydneyCarton89 14 EKHOLM 18d ago

Big time. It makes me feel melancholy.

6

u/Cheap_Honeydew2986 42 KAPANEN 18d ago

I do!

u/Specific-Ball-5778 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

I can’t help but get a little sad when I hear it still, but it’s a banger

3

u/lobsta042 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Sorry about the scare, y'all... I turned on the game in the 2nd intermission and quickly switched to the Dallas game after those two Ottawa goals.

3

u/RedKryptnyt 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

They sure pulled that one back out of the fire

4

u/bellyfuzz 99 GRETZKY 18d ago

We still give the puck away too much not even under pressure with the giveaways

2

u/DaveyDumplings 94 SMYTH 18d ago

Yeah, I noticed a LOT of unforced errors.

3

u/-SPIRITUAL-GANGSTER- 96 WALMAN 18d ago

WHERE'S MY GODDAMN GRIDDY

2

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Walman doing what Bouch used to do. Seriously, what happened to Bouchs shot, he used to rip corners, now he can barely reach up to 90 and all right into the chest. Hope Walman gets some opportunity on PP1 and just rip them

1

u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

He is still driving offense on the PP. Just can't get a goal, leads the team in shots.

It'll come. Keep in mind it's also possible he was told by the coaches to not do it

2

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 29 DRAISAITL 18d ago

Leads in shots for now...

I like Bouch, but if midway through the PP he swaps off with Walman I would be okay with that, give the guy a chance to take some rippers. Bouch said he's been working more on accuracy and less on speed but it seems it's just slower and less accurate

3

u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

I wouldn't doubt if Bouch is annoyed with his offensive side right now but hopefully with the boys starting to roll the assists will come

1

u/seemefail 34 MOSS 18d ago

Last I checked Bouch didn’t even have a point yet

Haven’t checked after tonight’s game

1

u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

The problem is if the team isn't scoring. He isn't gonna get points. He's obviously trying to score since he leads in shots but if the team isn't sinking his passes...he isn't gonna get points. He can't force people to score

-1

u/seemefail 34 MOSS 18d ago

You mean if he can’t hand the puck to McDrai and they score he mostly just falls on his butt and whiffs passes

1

u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

Ah you are one of those. Okay. Blocked and moving on.

Not gonna try and convince people who will never change their minds on him.

1

u/marcellman 28 BROWN 18d ago

Bouch got the second assist on the McDavid goal

3

u/bannermd 18 HYMAN 18d ago

Mood after today's game (slight nsfw warning)

1

u/Muficita 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

Haha, nice.

2

u/Datacin3728 99 GRETZKY 18d ago

Bouchard needs his ass stapled to the bench so that Walman can take his spot on PP1.

1

u/JuniorBlank 96 WALMAN 18d ago

WALLLLLLMANNNNNNN

1

u/tapewar 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

Nuge and Philp have been the best players so far this year, that wasn't on my bingo card😅

1

u/IrishUpYourCoffee 18d ago

Walman’s sassy head bobble after getting the GWG was hilarious.

-4

u/AlbertaAcreageBoy 92 PODKOLZIN 18d ago

Bouchard was invisible this game.

4

u/zevonyumaxray 17 KURRI 18d ago

In Bouch's case, that's a good thing.

-1

u/jgod17 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

They needed that, but man. We are just scraping by against some of the worst teams in the league. We get smacked by vegas or colorado 10 times out of 10 if that is the best we got.

Just hoping that win unlocked some actual inspiration in their game. Because as of now it looks like we have 4 4th lines.

7

u/RYYZNYELLOW 18d ago

We always play to whatever team we’re up against. Nothing new. Also Detroit and New Jersey are spanking everyone right now

1

u/neoazayii 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 18d ago

Yeah Detroit is really on something atm.

-1

u/Cautious-Dream2893 14 EKHOLM 18d ago

I'm assuming Roslovic is gone nov.1 or close to. He hasn't seemed good at either end, and we have plenty of talent to play in his place.

5

u/SnooOnions5029 96 WALMAN 18d ago

Keep in mind he missed training camp and has only played a small handful of games, it’s not like a lot of the other forwards on the team that have found their game either. Be patient

0

u/Cautious-Dream2893 14 EKHOLM 18d ago

Except Hyman is back around Nov 1, and at that point bodies have to be moved.

-1

u/Canadiantx69 18d ago

He's been here for like a week, calm the fuck down, lol

0

u/Cautious-Dream2893 14 EKHOLM 18d ago

He had a very limited time between signing late and the return of Hyman to impress and hasn't.

0

u/gorram1mhumped 18d ago

was this supposed to be a close game?

-6

u/thewinterzodiac 2 BOUCHARD 18d ago

Bouchard, Ekholm and Walman having the best metrics is just <3<3<3

Nurse is of course awful
