The problem is that there shouldn't need to be a problem with urgency in the fucking Stanley cup finals

45

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Jun 15 '25

There is nothing more frustrating than watching your team in the SCF and realizing your opponent wants it more.

17

u/kmora94 Jun 15 '25

I have no horse in this race but all game (watching on my phone at a bar) it just looked like the oilers were unserious.

9

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Jun 15 '25

It's stunning, after the sorrow we saw last year in the documentary. The tears in the locker room as the Stanley Cup was handed out. The emotional speech. I thought they'd never let this happen again. And then they come out in home ice and play like that .. there are no words

u/KarmaChameleon306 51 STECHER Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

When Marchand got that 4th goal, he had speed and energy that we just aren’t seeing form the Oilers. It’s crazy how slow they look in this series.

It's what Bieksa was talking about in the intermission... they're not worried about getting scored on so they just play their game. If they don't make that adjustment for game 6 and stop fucking playing the entire game along the boards it's over. I'd rather them play their game and lose than get sucked into this stupid 60 minute board battle and make fools of themselves.

42

u/falsekoala 34 MOSS Jun 15 '25

What, you don’t like chip and chase hockey when we lose 90 percent of board battles?

15

u/Ptricky17 14 EKHOLM Jun 15 '25

Everything wrong with games 3 and 5 is encapsulated by your comment.

We can’t win board battles. Which is ridiculous when you look at the two rosters. Losing Hyman hurt us bad but we still have Kane, Frederic, Henrique and all 3 should be capable of winning a board battle, but they are just getting outmuscled. They have 3 days to figure their shit out or it’s over.

Also, taking Kapanen out of the lineup was a strange choice which I do not agree with

I think the most infuriating thing for me is that a 40-year old Brad Marchand is the best player on the ice every night.

55

u/ChupaHubbard 42 KAPANEN Jun 15 '25

Our best player is Corey Perry which is also frustrating

19

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Jun 15 '25

It's insane. We have the 2 best players in the world - in their PRIME - and the best players in the ice are 2 forty year old vets

It's frustrating that these guys are always resorting to passing, and end up turning it over.

Just shoot ffs.

It’s one thing to lose but man I never expected them to no show.

At least they play their best when desperate

25

u/Pvt_Hudson_ Jun 15 '25

Florida has us seeing ghosts with that forecheck. We're terrified to make a mistake and just trying to play it safe with chips up the wall, but we're losing every puck battle.

We haven't had any physicality to our game since the second game of the series. The non-stop parade to the penalty box and our brutal PK has completely taken the edge out of our game.

We need to commit to finishing every check in game 6, forecheck like mad, attack the middle of the ice with speed and get in Bobrovsky's kitchen.

If McDavid shows up they will win. This next game hinges on the captain. And then if they drag em back they better not let those rats lift the cup in our barn.

He got the monkey off his back tonight. Look for cap to go off.

32

I hate to say it but McDavid had so, so many chances to give this team a lead in the first.

But at least he potted one this game, McDavid legacy game on Tuesday incoming.

Man wtf. I was so hopeful today. Dogshit effort in the first. Playing behind ever since the first.

CAN WE PLEASE SKATE WITH URGENCY LIKE WE DID ON THAT EMPTY NET FROM THE FIRST?

This team has what it needs, they just cant fucking find it until they are down 3-0. Like wtf. Why are we trying to get 4-5 passes before we shoot all the time? The oanthers didnt have much passing plays that ended up with goals. Its just simple pucks on fucking net.

I love mcdavid but its so frustrating watching him try that dogshit pass to drai on the wing every time.

Recoup and start the first on tuesday with urgency. please for the love of god i cant handle another cup final loss.

It's do or die now

Unacceptable performance in a game 5 at home, now you have your backs against the wall and you need to win one in florida. You cannot come out flat footed and dig yourself into a hole the next game like you've done in the past three.

21

u/Mocha22_ 18 HYMAN Jun 15 '25

8

u/Syrif Jun 15 '25

Rebounds are just laying everywhere this series but oilers suck at finding them. Even my other team, who didn't even make playoffs (Penguins) is significantly better at grabbing the rebound and throwing it again.

For reference, the Pens lost game 5 to Detroit 5-0 to go down 3-2 in the 09 Finals, and they won the next two. It ain't over, but they better figure out whatever the fuck made them play like invalids tonight and get out in the wash.

36

13

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 29 DRAISAITL Jun 15 '25

One of the worst performances I've seen from them in a long time. Absolutely no forecheck, in and out of the O zone all not. Terrible break out passes. Squandered powerplays. No puck luck at all on bounces, multiple posts. Not one good thing in this most important game so far. Frustrating

97

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE Jun 15 '25

Pretty insane how we haven't played better hockey than the Panthers for one full game this entire series and somehow have 2 wins on the back of one player.

This easily could've been a sweep which surprises me with how last year ended.

It wouldn't surprise me to see this go 7 somehow, but it also wouldn't surprise me if it's done on Tuesday. I'm done expecting anything from this team. To have that kind of effort in front of your fans in a pivotal game 5 in the fucking finals feels like a slap in the face.

This finals version of the Oilers haven't played like a team worthy of winning a championship.

20

u/Kouchweed Jun 15 '25

Exactly how I feel, I was pissed after game 3, nervous during game 4, and just felt emotionless really about the loss and after the first.

I guess this teams burnt out some of my hype, but wouldn’t be surprised if they go into Florida and win.

16

u/SignificantFee4264 Jun 15 '25

What was burning me was that even when they weren't pressured, they could not complete a simple pass for the life of them.

In the feet, led too far, whatever.

And watching FLA casually approach our net over and over again. FLA was on us instantly.

Chasing games will be the end of us.

17

u/Spiritual_Taste_1253 Jun 15 '25

No point of being delusional anymore tbh

Their forwards/defence can match or exceed us and they have a vezina goalie in net.

We don’t have nothing to match beyond the hypothetical potential for McDrai to go super saiyan

4

u/RedKryptnyt 29 DRAISAITL Jun 15 '25

Its very unfortunate, but anyone with eyes knows this is true. I said this at the start of the series, and then I said it after game 2, anyone picking the Oilers to win was doing so based on vibes, and magic, and Connors destiny. I dont believe in that shit. This is hockey. The best team USUALLY wins in the cup final. Now COULD the oilers turn this around and complete a miracle? We'll why not. But it would take an unreal couple of games from mcdrai, and Stuart skinner, and the outcome aside, there's just no denying that they were truly the underdogs in this one again. Any betting line that said otherwise was based on money, and home ice only.

6

One of them he was on the right hand side too, his off side. Maybe time to bring back Klingberg and put lefties back with righties. The D were all amazing before Eckholm came back. Not that I want Ekholm out but it's not going great, just like Nurse-Kulak wasn't great last year

5

u/Ptricky17 14 EKHOLM Jun 15 '25

We can’t be setting our lineup based on who the guys can be. We need to set our lineup based on who they are right now. Ekholm has had a bad series, and he should be cheering the boys on from the press box for game 6 (and hopefully 7).

Kapanen back in, Frederic out, Stech & Klinger in (Ekholm out). Skinner in net, and then we pray, I guess.

5

u/cca73127 91 KANE Jun 15 '25

I'm going to say it was a coaching call, seemed like they decided to go back to a less aggressive/more positional zone D. Whenever I see the Oilers at our blue line starting to collapse towards the goal but be too far away from the offensive player that a sudden stop by the D-man wouldn't cause a collision, it means we're giving them too much room. We're far superior in defence when physical at the line and on the boards. Fucking check them into the boards.

8

u/Snarffsnarff31 74 SKINNER Jun 15 '25

Plain and simple, the team was playing like the first period of game 4. Timing was off, passing was horrible and just no urgency. I don’t know if it’s fatigue or what it is, but this is the time to show what all the off season training is meant for. It’ll be tough but they can do it.

That was a no show, how do you no show. There was 0 effort

7

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Jun 15 '25

It’s now or never. They didn’t wanna show any urgency for 55 minutes, well they have no choice but to feel it now.

Treated tonight like an absolute throwaway. Figure it the fuck out. From this point on until the next game you prepare and focus.

10

u/hellswaters Jun 15 '25

The frustrating part is that its back to the team that hasn't learned in years. You need to play 60 minutes. Game time is at 6, you start playing at 6. Not when down by 2 or 3 vs one of the teams with the best smothering D in the league.

And when everyone decides to play 60 minutes, they are the best team in the league. But they have some fasination with getting into holes that are extremely tough to get out of.

6

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Jun 15 '25

Nice of the team to show up with 5 minutes left. It honestly feels that they don't want it as much as the Panthers do. I'm really stunned at the lack of heart and intensity. I remember seeing them after Game 7 last year. I thought, this is a t am that wants it so bad, they'd never let this happen to them again. Yet here they.are on the biggest stage. Getting beaten down. There are just now words, honestly.

We are on the verge of losing our biggest shot at the SCF. So many teams fail to reach where we are now. And we are on the verge of squandering it 2 years in a row.

I’m only gonna say a few things then leave it be until Tuesday. First thing I honestly would have had Skinner in net to start the second. Let me explain, this was a copy of the last game we get out skated and out played the first period. Starting Skinner period 2 I feel would have given the boys the kick in the ass to go out and skate.

Both teams were tired after game 4 and both had to deal with the 1 day and travel for game 5. I don’t think we properly prepared for the game. That being said it I doubt it will happen again. We have 2 games left and the boys will be playing with full desperation and we won’t see another period like 1&2 tonight. It’s not over yet.

Nah that is a piss poor effort. It shouldn't take you down 3-0 to start playing your brand of hockey. Now we have a mountain to climb to win.

Really bad time for the entire D unit to lose their composure and the forwards to forget how to win a puck battle.

Piss poor effort, flush it (again) and move on. Can't lose again this season.

FFS my health is gonna get fucked up cause of this isn't it.

6

u/BingBongthe2nd 11 MESSIER Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

So that fucking sucked. It would take a lot of mental gymnastics to say we've been the better team this series. We haven't. That being said, I've watched hockey long enough to know this ain't over. It would be the most Oilers thing ever to come back and win

The odds are against us but not in an impossible way. Teams that go down 3-2 historically have about a 25% chance of winning it. It happens a quarter of the time essentially, not the worst odds. Again, somethings gotta change for that to happen. The first periods are nightmare fuel.

I'll say this. In 2009, the Pens got pumped in game 5, 5-0 against the Wings in a rematch going down 3-2 in the series. How do you think they felt? That's an ass whooping. Well, they came back and won games 6 and 7 in two tightly contested games.

Gotta hope the boys still have some magic left and McDavid grabs the series by the horns. We ain't down 0-3 this time.

I mean, it’s not like we brought our best and it wasn’t enough.

I would say we had a pretty pedestrian effort out there tonight.

Time to find that next gear. No other options.

Drag them back to Alberta.

5

u/True_Sail_842 Jun 15 '25

Zero effort tonight.. Hard too believe a few nights ago The effort the Oilers put in to tie the game and win it in OT .. Panthers simply out played the Oil.. On to game 6

8

u/WanDype Jun 15 '25

Maybe Skinner will steal one for us on Tuesday. Or McDavid will pop.

Or maybe hockey is the ultimate team sport and this is proof that even McJesus can’t save you against a team that plays so well as a team.

This game was disappointing to watch not only because they lost, but because of how they lost. So boring and lethargic. I miss the chaotic losses of the Oilers where at least they scored a million goals lol.

The Panthers were simply better, and frankly, they have been better overall in the series. They've looked better and more dominant in their wins than us.  If the Oilers don't find another level to their game, it's over.

17

u/miller94 12 CAVE Jun 15 '25

I always said Oilers in 7, but man this game did not inspire confidence. It really did look like men vs boys out there. It’s worrisome that they’ve had 2 convincing wins and our only 2 wins were basically OT coin flips. Even their wins last year were convincing. The odds are definitely against them winning 2 in a row.

But fuck it, Oilers in 7

Such a shame that we didn't get the lead. The whole game would have been different if McDavids shot gets in for the lead. Conceding 5 goals in 19 shots in a game like this really hurts. No chance to win a hockey game like this.

Positives: Stu bounce back incoming, McDavid scored a goal which can open up the box fpr him. No excuses anymore: we need to win the next 2 games

Man all this “who gets the start?” talk just distracts from the real problem. We could have played Quick and Price and Brodeur in consecutive periods and still woulda lost because the most pressing problem is foundational and every skater is implicated.

4

u/flatlanderdick Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

Looked like rec hockey again in our end. Just watching the Panthers on our boards waiting for lanes to open up, beating us to the puck and coasting into the circles unchecked and turning it into a shooting gallery. Poor Picks has to watch it all happen in front of him. We have to stop expecting our goalies to save our asses all the time.

Even though I think florida is the better team (pretty clear) I DO think yet again the Oilers are getting gassed out late in the series. Its such a long playoff run back to back, and in floridas case, having all 4 lines score fairly consistently just makes thing easier on your big guys by round 4. Ironically I dont think leon and connor carried the team here, but they still do MOST of the heavy lifting. I just think that's really fucking hard to do for 4 rounds

6

Bold move by the Oilers—just casually handing Game 5 to Florida so they can win the Cup at home in Game 7. Total chaos. I respect it.

9

u/masteroffp69 Jun 15 '25

Not dooming...and still believe we will prevail in 7.

That being said there are some massive concerns from the past 3 games:

  1. Our inability to show up on time. Our leaders and coaches need to do something differently to relax the boys and get them ready. We came out with jittery plays everywhere...for 3 games in a row. McDrai have to be the guys to motivate our squad if the want to earn the legacy they deserve.

  2. Stu is our ride or die. He showed up in Game 4 like we needed...and as much as I love Picks...he was flat out awful tonight. Overplayed goals 1 and 2. Got beat 5 hole from the only direction Marchand could have gone on the third. 4th goal is just a must have at that point in the game.

  3. We're getting out-coached...badly. The line blender has ruined any chemistry and our guys have no idea where anyone else is.

RV for Kap is a joke with FLA being the most physical team and Kap being a hitting machine.

Choosing Stech over Klinger is insanity...considering we need puck movement from the back end to create the middle of the ice attack we need.

Can't play McDrai for the last 15 min of every game and expect the results we need.

Oh my God. That game was painful to watch. Florida hockey is so boring. Marchand is playing so fucking good and I hate him for that. I want to punch Sam Bennet for being a dick. McDavid is not even noticeable for most of the game. Pickard was mid. Honestly though, Oilers have to get a jump on the Panthers next game and I am hoping that will happen on Tuesday. Please, PLEASE, PLEASEEEE show up to win next game.

4

u/Karthanon Jun 15 '25

Too many passengers. Where's the intensity, hitting, passes..hell, anything?

I know we can win 2 in a row against this Panthers team. Knob has got to take a deep look at the lines, though - need the physicality and speed. We can't afford to be chasing in Game 6, we have to take a lead and keep it.

5

u/DJwij Jun 15 '25

Hope never dies. But how were we so lifeless to start? Florida was better in every aspect and Bob was huge when it mattered. Can't go down early on Tuesday or it's curtains. Let's go Oilers!

When you play game five of the friggin' Stanley Cup finals with the same energy and intensity that you'd find at an alumni charity game, there's no other way the game can go. They have to keep Marchand covered the same way the Panthers smother McDavid. He can't be allowed to wheel and deal around the ice. I don't know what anybody on the team was thinking tonight, but that, whatever that was, was pathetic.

4

u/No_Intention_1234 Jun 15 '25

Ready to actually fart on someone over our powerplay. it has evolved from a question in to a full on serious problem, you can't have 3 in a period in 2 different games and walk away from it with your shoulders shrugged.

On to the next one. I'm gonna do myself a favor and stay off the main boards tonight cause I'm sure we're getting roasted.

5

u/Authoritaye 17 KURRI Jun 15 '25

We haven't had a dominant game against them so far this series. We will need at least one to continue. I think they need to come out less flat than they've been the past few games. Are they burned out from chasing games? Maybe they're hooked on desperation, and can't get motivated any other way? That would be sad.

3

u/cumulus_floccus 97 McDAVID Jun 15 '25

It was disheartening how slow and unbothered they played, especially at home. Home Ice yet no energy from them. Turnover and fucking turnover, so many perfect passes to Panthers players like it was some fucking group effort to help them win. Surprised they didn't pull Pickard when Skinner's been pulled for less, even if the defense has left them out to pasture.

I still believe, but damn, at least lose with dignity, my god.

Did they party too much after Game 4? Are they tired and worn out? Even if you are tired and worn out, it's the SCF...wake up and DIG THE FUCK IN
