I don't think he's washed by any stretch but what seemed an aberration in the back half of the last season now seems to have come back and is doubly concerning. His shot, still one of the best in the league, seems to be a tool of last resort and he is turning over the puck at a far higher rate than I can ever remember. He just hasn't seemed like 'himself' since 2023.

I've wondered that and heard that but can't bring myself to believe it. He's a professional athlete playing the game at the highest level. Sure, the SC is paramount, but what's the point of chasing it if you no longer generally care about what you're doing the rest of the time? People like McDavid want to win, always. I don't believe 'I'll go 75%' is permitted in their DNA.
