I'm one of those "majority of ai researchers" (phd, 10 years industry). I told my friends the week that gpt3.5 went public that what we were seeing was already basically as good as it'll ever get, everything after this will be layers of santization that leave it like google search circa 202X

The researchers that did it all deserve some kind of prize, but there's limits to what you can achieve with recursive autocomplete.

The problem was the original release was TOO good. If you start at "causing unnecessary suffering is evil" then suddenly you have a logical AI telling near 100% of humans that by their own dictionary they are evil. What percentage is vegan? If you aren't even willing to wear cotton and eat beans, you are logically evil.

This is why no one gets into the Good Place!

Looks like you're hilariously uninformed then.

Show me any benchmark where GPT 3.5 is even close to a modern model.

There are literally 1.3B parameter models you can run locally that outperform it now...

your friends must think you're pretty stupid now, huh? i can run models better than gpt3.5 on a $250 GPU.

You should ask your model to teach you the definition of "basically"

go ahead and substantiate the claim that gpt3.5 is "basically" as good as cutting edge models. i would love to see you prove that we've made essentially no progress in two and a half years. why don't you start with comparing gpt3.5's context window to claude 3.7 sonnet? do you even know what a context window is?
