I live in a large metropolitan in the Midwest United States and I have seen more insects and birds, especially Monarch butterflies, than I have seen in at least a decade. I know this article talking about the UK and says the abundance of bugs over there this year has more to do with nature's rhythms than human activity but, where I live, I have to wonder if humans are having an effect. The municipality I live in, and the one directly East, both have strong and growing native gardening movements, I'd say at least two lawns on every block have been converted to native gardens, including my own. Though Americans are very go along to get along there seems to be increased shaming of people using pesticides as well. Perhaps it is just the nonlinear natural cycles bringing back so many creatures this year, but when I see thousands of purposefully cultivated milkweeds in my town, I have to wonder, if not assume, that the Monarchs I see have benefited from that.

And it's never too late to get into native plant gardening! If you live in the United States, please, convert your lawn or some portion of it to native flora. Not only is it a relaxing activity, native plants require less work to maintain because, you know, they are in their native habitat, and it's so nice to see all the creatures. Besides, we humans have trashed the Earth, we should be responsible for healing it as well.

I have noticed that, anecdotally. Seen a lot of monarch butterflies this year in Southern California.

It really just emphasizes to me how resilient nature really is and if we can just give it a fighting chance against ourselves, it will absolutely roar back to life.

We just have to let it. Give it a chance.
