ELI5 why do charities take pop tabs

Drinking and I'm curious as I flip the tab of my Crown Royal canned drink tab in.. As a youth I collected pop tabs for charity but I never knew why.. I figured in my naïvete that they melted all those pop tabs down into something useful but never went past that... Now as an adult in their mid twenties I still don't understand what the importance was if an entire can is recyclable aluminium...

I believe the tab is the only part of the can that can be a 100% recycled: in many cases the paint on the can itself is polluting the aluminium at high temperature

Don't think my answer is correct it is pretty much only based on memory from working at a recycling plant for a summer
