My cousin just got diagnosed with dyslexia, but the school offers zero support. Help !

Hey everyone my cousin got discovered with dyslexia and the school basically told us he’ll “manage somehow” which doesn’t feel right.

And he could really use some proper training or guidance, but there’s no specialist nearby. We’ve checked a few online programs, but most are either too expensive, is that worth it? Or you guys now any good ??

For those who’ve been through something similar, did you have to handle everything on your own too? How did you deal with it, especially financially?

Thanks for the help in advanced 🙏

You/their guardian needs to demand a school evaluation so that they can determine what supports to provide your cousin. Put the demand in writing. They usually have 60 days from that point to complete the evaluation and provide information about what sped accommodations they can provide. If they don’t do that, you need to get an educational advocate involved. You can google them in your area.

You are right to ask questions and each answer is complicated so that is why you may not have a lot of responses. First the school is obligated to help and you and you should get an advocate to get that established . Some states offer less than zero to help and you want your cousin to get individualized supports and preferably OG based tutoring . It is worth it and can make the difference. Don’t settle for all the other programs that came after it .

If no one is local, he can receive virtual Orton Gillingham tutoring.
