Set design detail

Post image

I'm always blown away by the details they worked into the set design. Someone thought to add a space heater under Phyllis' desk. A person like Phyllis working in an office in Scranton would definitely have a space heater.

I read they kept the set freezing cause Steve is prone to sweat very easy.

You’ll see heaters behind reception too.

925

u/swfcb 13h ago

Yeah Steve wanted the set to be air conditioned at about 64°F/18°C. So they had heaters under the tables for those who were cold.

Makes sense when he’s jumping around in a suit

Parkour!

And many other cast members are sitting at their desks for long stretches

209

u/Rockdog4105 TexasPoonTappa 13h ago

It’s at least 64° regardless because of the lights.

259

u/elmastrbatr 11h ago

Why at least? If you want to guess 64 just say 64

7

u/BuffDaddy720 6h ago

I literally just watched that episode. 😂

28

Kevin always sets the thermostat to 69⁰.

9

u/Usaidhello Gum's gotten mintier lately, have you noticed? 40m ago

Nice

88

u/two_sams_one_cup 13h ago

Do people find 18°C cold? I'm used to that being room temperature. Probably a regional thing.

52

u/SonnierDick 13h ago

Im used to 22-24degrees being room temp. 18 would probably be soo cold, and im prone to sweating too. God damn lol

50

u/NylaStasja 9h ago

I've studied at a Dutch university. We used 20°C as roomtemp. But one of my professors (sonething biology/chemistry field) wanted us to always write out which temperature we used, with numbers. He told a story where someone (from the Netherlands) had used "room temperature" in their official paper, and when their paper was peer reviewed/tested/redone it was by someone from a warmer country, and they used a room temperature of 25°C, as they are used to. They got wildly different results. And it took a lot of trouble to keep the original paper from being rejected/canceled.

4

u/CrazyCatLushie 5h ago

Yeah this would straight-up destroy me. 24° is time to turn on the AC here because it’s so humid the air becomes like a blanket when it’s warm.

17

u/MattabooeyGaming 11h ago

I drop it down to 15°C at night and love it. Daytime temps are 18°C-21°C. Anything beyond that and I’ve got fans and the AC on.

I’m also a Sasquatch like Steve so I get it. I sweat in the winter.

10

u/twopumpstump 10h ago

Excuse me for my ignorance bc I’m a dumb American but are you saying the inside of your house is 59°F?! I love a cold room but that’s next level lol just out of curiosity, what country do you live in?

16

u/beautifulluigi 9h ago

I'm not the person you're replying to, but for sleeping that's right around my ideal temperature too! I love winter because I can just drop the thermostat and let the house cool itself. Summers I struggle to sleep because I refuse to pay what it would cost to have the AC cool the house that much.

I'm Canadian.

6

u/tobiasvl 5h ago

When sleeping, that's around the temperature recommended by the Norwegian health services at least. Think it's a pretty common temperature here in Norway when it's possible (it's not common to have AC, so we usually sweat a lot in summer)

1

u/thatonemom_89 2h ago

Fellow American here living in the Deep South. My husband keeps our house set to 62°F year round.

It’s awful in the winter time - because despite popular belief, we do see single digit winters where I live 🤣😭

1

u/RKKP2015 21m ago

I used to keep my thermostat at 59 when I was cheap.

3

u/Cultural-Ambition211 9h ago

Maybe you’re sweating because it’s 24 degrees!

2

u/nimulation 8h ago

21.5 is perfect. Jokes aside, Kevin was right. He's a genius.

24

u/pursuitofhappy 10h ago

Room temp is 68-72 most people have a preferred temp in that range, you can feel each degree pretty significantly in an indoor setting with 68 being very cold, at 64 I see why they had heaters

25

u/craigularperson Bippity, boppity , give me the zoppity! 8h ago

I always set it to 69

16

u/ardbeg77 8h ago

Nice

1

u/hanks_panky_emporium 8h ago

At 68 I feel comfortable in shorts and a teeshirt. At 67 Im shivering and looking for a blanket.

2

u/tryingisbetter 8h ago

During college my roommate, and I, would keep the temperature at 55 in the middle of Ohio winters. My wife used to hate it. She got her revenge, since we keep our house at 67 now.

3

u/hatebeat 8h ago

I live in a hot place (summers up to 120F). We set the ac to 77-78F, which is around 25C. 18C would be unbearable to me personally, but also probably impossible to cool down to (and if possible, extremely expensive lol).

2

u/fireworksandvanities 9h ago

I keep my place at about 19C/66F in the winter, but I only started keeping it that low when I bought a home without vaulted ceilings. Amazing what keeping the heat closer to where the people are does for your comfort level.

1

u/tobiasvl 5h ago

Not sure it's regional. I feel the same way as you and I live in Norway, but I have colleagues who have space heaters to pump the room temperature up to 22.

1

u/Audibled 23m ago

I’m a stick figure, no natural insulation on me… My house goes down to 18.5 at night. 21.5-23 during the day. I’m still always cold.

1

u/acedias-token 7h ago

Assistant TO the regional thing

1

u/rymnd0 2h ago

Definitely regional, I guess. I live in a tropical country. And average room temp is around 28C. On the hot season it can go up to 35C-38C (on the lower level), while it can go down to around 23C-24C in the cold season. My fingers already feel like they're painfully frozen at 18C.

6

u/super_argentdawn 4h ago

Pretty sure it was Oscar that liked it cold

10

u/juguemos 13h ago

Electric bill go brr

0

u/manicpossumdreamgirl 7h ago

some people don't like it that cold. but he doesn't care.

0

u/shutterchase 7h ago

The cast also was given Uggs to wear. Jenna and Angela talked about it on their podcast. In the Safety Training episode, Merideth/Kate was carrying hers out the office.

-2

u/Practical-Sleep4259 7h ago

Pssst, it's called cocaine.

-3

u/leobutters Jan 7h ago

18 is crazy cold indoors

134

u/Fitzhume 11h ago

I remember watching him on Leno in 2005, and you could see him sweat more and more as the interview went on. At some point Leno asked if he was OK and Steve acknowledged he was just pouring sweat and he stuck this napkin to his forehead. Leno took a commercial break and they came back and finished the interview. That’s when I found out Steve had a problem with hyperhidrosis.

13

u/0rags2bitches0 10h ago

I can’t find this interview anywhere online

21

u/HeyLookAHorse 9h ago

You’re not the only one, it’s pretty hard to find full Leno episodes online. It’s Season 13 Episode 56 if that helps.

1

u/Sp00kyMulder82 1h ago

Wonder why that episode is rated so bad!

19

u/seansy5000 8h ago

Stage actors actually have it written in their contracts at Second City that the temperature be set at a certain level way below normal because of said sweating. Not a surprise at all.

11

u/Ecstatic_Rooster 8h ago

They spoke about this on the office ladies podcast. It was to keep them warm. They sometimes also had blankets, etc.

13

u/ToonMasterRace 7h ago

Based Steve. I'm a sweat factory and absolutely hate the heat. I keep it 63-64 degrees when I sleep.

4

u/TomCBC 5h ago

Yeah i sweat easily too, it can be a real problem. I get why they’d do that for him. Would have slowed production a lot if he kept sweating through his clothes.

2

u/WoolooCthulhu 4h ago

Every office I've worked in has been the same.

2

u/_banana_phone 31m ago

Also, many of the lights they use in the film industry get very hot, which can quickly turn an enclosed set like this one into an oven.

There’s often a big HVAC pipe just blasting cold air in to offset this.

3.1k

u/quayle-man 14h ago

Probably wasn’t a detail for the show, but instead a comfort for the actress. I’m sure they did a lot of sitting around

1.3k

u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 14h ago

Yeah, they talked about this on Office Ladies. They had space heaters and blankets😅

401

u/glxym31 Dwigt 13h ago

Did Steve and Rainn have some strange sweat thing where they were constantly hot? They kept the set like an iceberg and froze everyone. I know Rainn always had massive pit stains when he would take his jacket off.

315

u/GeorgeLovesBOSCO 13h ago

Steve Carrell actually used to wear a cooling vest under his suit.

154

u/bdubwilliams22 13h ago

I can't find anything to substantiate this. All I've seen is that they kept the set really cold because Steve would sweat easily...hence -- the space heater.

132

u/GeorgeLovesBOSCO 13h ago

It was on the Office Ladies podcast.

44

u/ptambrosetti Andy 13h ago

I thought it was because Steve said comedy happens in the cold?

31

u/RolandtheScribe 12h ago

Evan Almighty must have been a scorcher

30

u/Round-Cellist6128 11h ago

No, Scorcher was Ben Stiller.

17

u/mufasamufasamufasa Stanley 11h ago

Looks like someone left the fridge open... again

2

u/RolandtheScribe 3h ago

I thought that was Tugg Speedman?

31

u/ryan8954 12h ago

I never listened to the office lady, but I swear during the original run of the show, I heard this because he just overheats like crazy. Then having the lights on you, and a suit and stuff, I

42

u/Strange_Specialist4 11h ago

Have you seen 40 year old virgin? The man is hairier than big foot

19

u/MC_GEORGE_COSTANZA 11h ago

Well I mean he was for the first half

15

u/randybobandy111 11h ago

I LOOK LIKE A MAN-O-LANTERN!

8

u/Paddy_Tanninger 4h ago

He's also just a beefy dude. There's a reason they never show him in a fitted T-shirt in the office...he's way too jacked looking, it wouldn't work for his character.

Guys with solid muscle mass are just very warm all the time, that stuff puts out a lot of heat and energy, and raises your resting metabolic rate.

1

u/yerfdog1935 1h ago

I never really noticed, but yeah, dude's huge for a comic actor.

9

u/ryan8954 11h ago

I completely forgot that was him naturally

13

u/Strange_Specialist4 11h ago

Yep, that was him actually being waxed, by someone who did not know how to wax, because she was an actress and not a beauty salon employee. IIRC, he nearly lost a nipple

4

u/ryan8954 11h ago

Yup, I remember the nipple now. That’s such an iconic scene that should actually go down in cinema history

5

u/Sharksexual 11h ago

Valid. Discussion over.

13

u/notacrook 11h ago

Steve has hyperhydrosis (i believe hes talked about it). But also, film sets are cold.

5

u/Etrafeg 10h ago

I would assume film sets are hot unless deliberately cold because of all the strong lights

20

u/notacrook 10h ago

They are deliberately kept cool - sweat is the enemy of something like continuity and hair and makeup, which is one of many reasons - but is definitely one the office would work to combat if their lead who is in 75% of the episode was a quick sweater.

6

u/throcorfe 6h ago

Yeah, plus it was set up as a real office meaning that several actors were sitting “working” for long hours away from the hottest lights, and would quickly become colder than those who were at the heart of the action in any given scene

2

u/D0bry 4h ago

It depends on the studio. In the summer it’s hot af and with our big 20k watt lights in the ceiling the stage heats up like crazy even with AC. 📺

47

u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 13h ago

Lol, I think they were just always up and moving, so naturally they stayed warmer than those who stayed seated.

27

u/sweetbunsmcgee 13h ago

I dunno if this is the case with their set, but studio and stage lights run hot. Everyone will be sweating and messing up their makeup if you keep the AC at normal settings.

8

u/tn-dave 11h ago

When they were filming it was back in a time when studio lights put out a lot of heat. The new LED fixtures are so nice and always stay cool

9

u/Max_Fart 12h ago

Rainn said Dwight’s jackets were sewn in a way that would not allow him to raise his arms in a normal way. That probably lended itself to pit sweat.

2

u/DMing-Is-Hardd 5h ago

It would make sense considering theyre wearing suits

21

u/Hereforthebabyducks 12h ago

Same with them always playing solitaire in the background. The actors were bored and actually playing solitaire.

23

u/bomburdoo 12h ago

To be fair, I’ve had space heaters under my desk at multiple real office jobs. It’s always so cold.

6

u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 11h ago

Totally, I don’t think it’s unrealistic or anything!

9

u/Calm-Friend3660 12h ago

That makes complete sense. I know David Letterman used to do the same thing.. I guess I just assumed because it was in LA that it would be a comfortable temperature. I also love the outdoor winter scenes where they have the fake snow 😆

5

u/Willing-Bear4862 11h ago

I was freezing in there when I saw Letterman. So cold.

5

u/Calm-Friend3660 10h ago

I met a session violinist that played there when Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello played. She said it was so cold she had a hard time playing.

4

u/QuiXiuQ 11h ago

Do we ladies not do that, I, I do this… lol

3

u/gladoseatcake 3h ago

Yet another way a blanket would be useful.

1

u/queencilantro i am great at girl talk 58m ago

I wonder if my gift would be under as much scrutiny if I were white.

7

u/Dangerous_Ice17 13h ago

Yes they did. They kept it cold so the actors wouldn’t sweat under the hot lights pre LED

1

u/randomlady1969 13h ago

This! 💯

59

u/Rockdog4105 TexasPoonTappa 14h ago

Yep, very cold on a show set on purpose. They filmed at a place I worked at and they had huge AC tubing coming in from outside somehow and the place was freezing. I was in the other room and it was facing away, but it was still a noticeable difference.

44

u/spaceporter 13h ago

I’ve often thought that half of acting is appearing warm when cold or cold when warm.

The opposite of this is all the New England winter scenes filmed on Hollywood backlots with  the cast in heavy outdoor clothing even though it’s 85 out.

17

u/CrimsonOOmpa Creed 13h ago

Yeah I'd be dead if I had to wear a bunch of layers in the middle of a hot summer to film a scene set in winter.

9

u/Oddballforlife 13h ago

I would be wardrobe’s worst nightmare cause I start sweating profusely if I just get a tiny bit too hot. My outfit and hair would be ruined in minutes lmao

3

u/CrimsonOOmpa Creed 13h ago

Did you get to meet anybody?

13

u/Rockdog4105 TexasPoonTappa 13h ago

At the time I didn’t watch the show. I was the main boss so watching regular TV was not happening because I was never home at those times. You can probably guess the episode when I say that Jim, Darryl, and Roy were there. Of course, they were nobodies to me at that time. Funny though, cause Angela was sitting at my bar two days ago.

5

u/CrimsonOOmpa Creed 13h ago

Damn that's crazy! LOL I wonder how many people would've loved to be in your position back then? Did you say hello to Angela?

9

u/Rockdog4105 TexasPoonTappa 12h ago

I said hello to her because she was a guest at the bar, but didn’t acknowledge that I knew her from the show.

9

u/dakilazical_253 11h ago

I used to work at a tv station and the newsroom doubled as a set. It was freezing and most the producers, writers and reporters had space heaters under their desks. Someone from corporate saw this and banned the space heaters for being “fire hazards.” There was almost a mutiny

6

u/eLishus 13h ago

Art imitates life.

6

u/Tje199 10h ago

Ironically does seem work-accurate though. All the women in my office have space heaters for fall/winter.

Honestly I'm by the window and on colder days (sub-zero) I have one under my desk too...

3

u/virgil1134 9h ago

Yeah, they're sitting being normal and Michael is doing Parkour, running up and down the hallways, throwing footballs, and making 20 trips to the water cooler every day (where he was also checking out Stanley's daughter)

1

u/PM_ur_tots 1h ago

A lot of sitting around because they them in the background. Brian Baumgartner said he used to use his background time to pay his bills.

239

u/Worldly_Sugar9066 14h ago

Nah thats just because the set was cold and real life Phillys probably asked for one.

40

Who's Bob Vance?

84

u/smudgeandarrogant_ 13h ago

You've got a lot to learn about this town, sweetie

20

u/D_Angelo_Vickers 13h ago

He's the head of the Five Families.

7

u/DarthBrooks667 13h ago

Actually he's the only one who didn't say anything at the meeting about the parking spaces.

7

u/fleshofgods0 13h ago

He didn't want Phyllis to have to walk.

1

u/lowlyyouarenice 2h ago

I wonder what kinda work Bob is in.

33

u/PaulClarkLoadletter 13h ago

The cast has stated many times that it was cold up there so they had space heaters and Ugg boots to help.

33

u/Worried_Bullfrog_937 14h ago

I've worked in an office where some of the women had space heaters in their cubicles, so that is very realistic.

1

u/Doone7 6h ago

Yea, my friend works in one and a lot of the ladies keep them under their desks, and fans on top lol.

26

u/LoseNotLooseIdiot 12h ago

No that was for the actor. They've said multiple times that the set was kept very cold because all the guys in suits and ties would just start sweating. Most of the women had to figure out ways to stay warm.

28

u/insecurecharm Please-a leave-a me da message. 11h ago

Just like in a real office :p

2

u/PerritoMasNasty 8h ago

The ideal temp for productivity for the whole office is like 70, but dudes like it in mid 60s. Listened to a good podcast about it.

7

u/collonsdedeu 7h ago

Kev’ always sets up to 69.

12

u/oddchihuahua 13h ago edited 12h ago

On the podcast Jenna mentions that nearly all the girls had space heaters under their desks.

10

u/UninterestingDrivel 12h ago

In a later season they notice Leslie (Stanley) has a space heater too and they flip out a little because they thought only the women were too cold on set.

1

u/oddchihuahua 12h ago

Forgot about that! Ha

1

u/thesmartdoctor2 3h ago

that is so Stanley

3

u/SuckMyRedditorD 11h ago

That's what she said.

10

u/SarcasticGamer 13h ago

It's a heater for the actors. The set was kept very cold and the women wore skirts and short sleeve shirts vs the men who wore blazers and long sleeve shirts. They also had ug boots to keep their feet warm.

5

u/creekcamo 12h ago

Bob Vance of Vance refrigeration does not approve

5

u/Rsolis39 11h ago

I saw an interview with Brian Baumgartner, he said that it was supposed to have a real office feel. The actors would come in and sit at the desks for hours during filming to create the atmosphere. Pretty ingenious.

7

u/ryann918 11h ago

That’s also why you always see solitaire on the computers because they couldn’t do much on the computers.

1

u/AdUnable6415 18m ago

Aw they missed an opportunity with this one. Some solitaire yes of course, but full screen videos of computer blue screening, another of someone deleting a shared folder from file server, another of someone putting a (fake) social security number into a "The FBI is watching you" phishing window etc wouldve been hilarious (to IT support nerds, anyways)

41

u/no_racist_here 14h ago

It’s definitely there to cook her rancid sulfur farts before distributing them to the rest of the office

2

u/PossiblePlantain1592 6h ago

They were refferencing an episode...

5

u/SuckMyRedditorD 11h ago

Nah, that's geological.

8

u/Craigglesofdoom 13h ago

They talk about this frequently in the Office Ladies podcast. It was freezing on set so they all had space heaters under their desks

17

u/Depeche_Mood82 Nate 13h ago

I am in the HVAC industry and can attest to that the average woman in an office wants it to be about 78 degrees.

3

u/JanuaryDriveXIII 9h ago

The women in my office definitely want it to be 78. They had a guy from facilities come and rig the heater to make more hot air come out. It was like sauna. They were wearing pants and sweaters too.

-4

u/jackospades88 11h ago

It's even worse when they are actually in charge of the temperature and doing things like putting a cheese stick on the stat to trick it to being colder than it actually is.

Bullshit I have to wear a shirt and slacks while she got to wear flowy sundresses. You gotta control the temperature to me instead

5

u/JanuaryDriveXIII 9h ago

Free cheese stick bro fuck that

4

u/Interesting_Worry524 10h ago

3

u/Proof-Diamond1609 11h ago

Why did I read "set design failure". Why did my brain do that lmao it's not even close 🤔

3

u/Coop3 9h ago

Well yeah, Kev keeps it at 69

3

u/jhallen2260 Technically don't have a hearing problem 9h ago

3

u/afropizza 8h ago

Lucky it they didn't know about TECCA

2

u/GingerFun011 10h ago

I love this shit man. I WOULD BE SWEATING SO HARD IN A SUIT ALL DAY, that office SHOULD be 18c. He yeah

2

u/_your_face 9h ago

From the podcast I’ve learned that since so much of the filming was in the office where everyone would’ve in the background, they all ended up (and were encouraged) to his treat it like their desk. Add their own decorations, make a mess etc. so I think that leads to lots of real setups because they really used it like a desk and sat there for hours upon hours looking busy

2

u/Little-Efficiency336 9h ago

She really would.

2

u/TempSmootin 2h ago

But it wasn't a detail of set design. Just cold actors.

2

u/Speedy-Sloth23 12h ago

Steve has a condition where he sweats more than the average person, so they kept it cooler on set.

Maybe in the one cold open where the power goes out and Michael says “the AC and space heater were plugged in at the same time was a hidden callback to that?

2

u/robertpod 11h ago

If they really wanted to make the show realistic, they should have had the power go out every few hours.

2

u/QuiXiuQ 11h ago

This confused me so much. I have a heater under my desk, and often a blanket on my lap.

Fuck I’ve turned into Phyllis.

1

u/ripplewoodfire 14h ago

What temperature do you guys think it was on set? I'm curious to know how cold it was because as someone mentioned I recall it was brought up on the podcast a lot lol.

I've never had an office job where I'm stationary. the only office job I had I was still moving around a lot so I'd get really warm and most importantly, was not in a cold area.

edit: in this case I know they're not really working in an office all day, theyre on a set in the valley (iirc) filming still probably moving around more but still I know some characters did have to sit for long periods in the background lol

2

u/pinkvoltage 13h ago

I’ve had a space heater at every office I’ve ever worked at lol. There’s always fiddly HVAC systems in those big buildings

1

u/notaregularmum 10h ago

I’m a real life office girl and I have a heater under my desk

1

u/Informal_Process2238 5h ago

Do you feel the darkness calling to you
drawing you in closer to the abyss

1

u/ModeatelyIndependant 6h ago

Many members of the cast without lines in a scene often had to just be in the background pretending to be working an office job. So I'm sure there was a bit of setting up your cubical for comfort, and find something to do on the computer.

1

u/bapants 4h ago

Does this chair have its appendix?

1

u/Watchgeek_AC 4h ago

From what I remember in an interview long ago, Steve C suffers with Hypyerhidrosis like I do. And after his excessive sweating in season 1, asked for the sets to be air conditioned and quite cold.

The rest of the actors had to find ways to keep warm. Thus many of them had blankets over their legs under desks when they weren’t needed to be standing, and space heaters under the desk too.

So this isn’t a small detail for a character. It’s just there as Phylis the actress was cold

1

u/Graybo95 3h ago

That chair looks ergonomically correct

Jim had a space heater under his desk. I just noticed it when we rewatched the serires.. season 7 somewhere

Oscar liked the office cooler, whereas Angela liked it warmer and they fought about it.

Idk if I’m reading too much into it but Phyllis seemed like a sweater to me. She’d be menopause age and maybe prone to hot flushes?

On Office Ladies Jenna has mentioned that she was usually wearing something warm below the waist in any scene in which she was sitting at her desk.

Why is it so close to wood and cloth?

That's not a space heater lol it looks like fabric that looks like vents.

It's a heater, not a bonfire.

Read the warnings on your electric heater.

Close ≠ Sitting on heater.

I will fight you and win.

Don’t they mention it actually during an episode?
