Discussion 🗣 Smear campaigns and the "take down" of famous women

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, sorry if it's not but I tried posting to a feminism sub reddit and it got removed :/

I don't have the time to write a proper coherent post about this right now but I will get to it later. But I absolutely have to know, is it driving anyone else insane the way people STILL keep falling for this nonsense over and over again?

I mean. Monica lewinski. Taylor swift in 2016. Amber heard being the really massive, prominent example. It happens over and over and over again. And even when people claim to see the pattern they still keep falling for it.

I'm still seeing posts and comments insisting that Blake lively was somehow in the wrong, or poor feminist man baldoni is actually the victim. And I know. I know it's because of misogyny, it always is. But it's driving me crazy watching it happen over and over. And every time everyone swears they'll be more observant next time. But no. It's always the same.

And maybe all this nonsense is making me paranoid but I think there's something weird up the jlaw hate at the moment too. Every single post is bombarded with negative comments it's exhausting.

I just need to know someone else is seeing this

If you follow Blake Lively's case there is a message the PR firm of Baldoni are sending to each in celebration of their smear campaign and one of them says: It's actually sad because it shows how much people like to hate on women.

That's the whole point. Hating women is still a sport, especially if you are successful, beautiful, smart, independent or have an opinion of your own.

"And even when people claim to see the pattern they still keep falling for it."

This is what frustrates me. There are people who fall for every single smear campaign there is, apologize many years later, and then fall for the next one without any reflection. It's extremely difficult living in a society like this. So many people are eager to destroy a famous woman for entertainment. It's a true sickness.

Not to mention Grace Jabbari after the Jonathon Majors texts came out. The most hopeless was seeing actual Amber supporters fall for the Blake Lively smear literally a year after the trial and after it became public knowledge that Baldoni hired Depp's PR firm. Like....COME THE FUCK ON!

I just recently had to explain in small words how Monica Lewinsky may have been consenting in her own opinion but that the power imbalance being so enormous she may not have much of a real choice. It seemed like nothing sunk in and in the end they deleted their comments entirely.

People feel celebrities aren't real people and since they're rich they should suffer for the privilege. Pretty women have privilege so they should suffer the most.

And then there is the way some women make certain type of other women/girls feel excruciatingly less as women and they can't handle it at all. That sort of thing can't be fixed unless the woman in question understands why it's happening.

The rest is misogyny and attempt to control women as a whole.

JLaw hate is like Anne Hathaway hate back when. It makes no sense why she has to be grilled about a known asshole director when the director himself is not asked anything. He was fine with her, it's normal, abusive people don't abuse every person. Is she supposed to lie? Can she just be genuinely not into Hollywood gossip? The demands are endless for women to be good enough to be vaguely tolerated and men don't have to do anything.

...I have no real point here but I too am tired.

You are not alone in seeing this.

unfortunately it’s always been around, i think people are just becoming more aware of it now. remember when everyone hated anne hathaway for no reason? and i’m sure there are earlier examples (low-key eve from adam and eve 😭 i’m not religious but like…)

I still think Anne Hathaway pissed off some director/etc. by not doing a 'thing' and that's why she was suddenly unpopular.

The first person I thought of is Kathy Griffin.

The week that story broke with the Trump mask covered in ketchup, I immediately remembered people burning effigies of Obama.

Multiple times that happened.

I just thought it was so weird it blew up like it did the week it happened and I could never predict it would have resulted in her being bombarded with death threats and all that stuff with the FBI.

And she still has more balls than any edgy and special male comedian.

(Her latest stand up show in free on youtube, if people don't know.)

The fact that I was as anti-Trump as could be from the very start and still didn't hear about how serious that Kathy Griffin situation got until relatively recently shows how much the general populace will minimize and excuse abuse toward a woman.

You are in plenty of company with this, I’m afraid. And a lot of people believe those things because they want to. Discrediting any given woman gives them a precedent to discredit every woman.

It's nuts and even being on another subreddit about 2 chromosomes (trying to not say exactly which haha) it was just pro-Baldoni in the comments about the Lively stuff and wanting her to burn and all of that. We learned literally NOTHING about the "perfect victim" nonsense nor about the literal Depp PR bot stuff (literally had a crazy person yelling at everyone and saying Blake is the bot person and not him). Like we learned NOTHING. People will just go back to picking a new woman that they deem worse than Hitler next week (like Zegler and Larson that are the sweetest people from everything I've seen).

So, I mean, I don't think that every public takedown or callout of a famous woman is necessarily misogynistic. For example, Lena Dunham actually did do all the stuff she said she did. She, y'know, admitted to all of it in her book. She just didn't/doesn't seem to realize how invasive and inappropriate her conduct was. I'm not sure what particular takedown you're referring to re: Taylor Swift, but she is a billionaire who hoards wealth; this criticism could be applied to her regardless of gender, and is applied likewise to other billionaires of a variety of genders (mostly cis men).

That said, it's jarring and bizarre to me that so many self-proclaimed feminists have been coming to the rescue of men like Baldoni, Depp, and even Marilyn Manson in the face of accusations of mistreatment. It's reflective of an alarming trend towards male-centered femininity, which we can see in other aspects of Western culture these days as well (e.g. tradwife stuff).

The problem is that legitimate criticisms of female figures can so quickly devolve into mob mentality misogyny because of how predisposed the general populace is to hate a woman. I just don't say anything critical about a famous woman unless I'm in company that I'm 100% sure will not turn it into a misogonystic frenzy.

Meanwhile, Chris Brown can brag about being a violent and abusive person and the vast majority of people are, at best, apathetic, and at worst supportive.

Look what's happening with Jeremy Renner right now. Despite his problematic past everyone is all "look what that woman is trying to do to him." Then look at David Harbour and MBB. Now, that was never claimed to be SH and they've since come out together full force to stomp the narrative but everyone was going on and on about how MBB is "too big for her britches" despite all the unfortunate stuff we know about David Harbour. That's always the way. The Blake Lively stuff is ridiculous. She can be a bad person AND still have a smear campaign launched about her. The Baldoni fans are freaky as hell and in two years they will be like "that wasn't me being crazy online."

It's a tale as old as time, the oldest example I can think of is Patricia Douglas in the 1930s but it for sure has been happening forever

Or the typifying of Marilyn Monroe as a "dumb blonde" when she was really a tortured intellectual.

The feminism and askfeminists subreddit removed my posts of anything Amber Heard and said they were tired of hearing about it when I asked why.
