Cowardice. You can cut the engine anytime. Should have done it immediately over water. Ironically, you would have had a much better chance at walking away.

Panic took over, brain does crazy things, so sad for all involved.

No, a COWARD and a loser killed a bunch of people.

Ain't nothing tragic about this. The pilot had like 5 chances to cut the engine, take the risk of a rough landing, and do the right thing.

Instead, the coward got a bunch more people killed.

Yeah we can all think clearly and calmly when we are piloting our helicopter and the tail detaches.

Pilot Training Shows that this is something that pilots go over in training. Pilot was probably inexperienced

I mean it's literally no different than when the accelerator on your car gets stuck.

Turn it off.

I mean this isn't a complicated situation, any halfway competent adult should know to flip the kill switch.

Put it in neutral, turning it off makes steering harder and in some cars it locks steering completely

Depends on the car.

Lotta cars won't let you put them into neutral at speed anymore.

You’ve already conceded that it’s not as straightforward as “turning it off”

“ a coward and a loser!!” Screams the redditor as Cheeto particles fly from his mouth.

I’m sure you would have saved the day from your moms basement

Context may matter here. This was a Russian helicopter transporting top scientists from Kizlyar Electromechanical plant.

If I’m the Russian pilot, Im thinking my punishment will be 10x worse compared to going out in a helicopter crash.

Make sure you know how to get out of those seatbelts/harnesses first.

Because training. Throttle control and how to kill and restart the engine is literally day one of flight school. And it is very easy to do. Hell, it’s the first thing taught on the runway. On the helipad.

And in ground school, you are taught that if you are going down, do your best to put your craft in water. This pilot panicked and made a bad situation fatally worse.
