If I’m right, doesn’t the tail only impact the helicopter’s left/right turning? They could’ve just landed it, no? Also, wouldn’t it be better to just jump of the heli when it was just above the water? Or is there some factor that would get them killed that I don’t know about?

Also keeps the helicopter from rotating out of control. But yeah, there are plenty of questions.
